at any rate  idiom

I don't think they liked my idea. At any rate, they weren't very enthusiastic  about it.

at least  idiom

@ as much as, or more than a number or amount:

It will cost at least $100.

C used to say that someone should do something small, even if they do  nothing else:

Even if she didn't want to send a present, she could at least have sent a card.

at the same time idiom

used to mention something that must be considered in addition to what you   have just said:

No one likes conflict, but at the same time we have to deal with this problem.

deal with this problem = discuss this problem

We arrived at the same time.

*at the same time

cf. simultaneously

Building a new children's home will cost a lot of money but, be that as it may,   there is an urgent need for  the facility.

= Building a new children's home will cost a lot of money but, even if  (=    granting that) it may be true,  there is an urgent need for the facility.

but

・used to express a difference or to introduce an added statement:

but then (again)

idiom

but when you think about the matter more or in another way:

cf. taking into consideration  that 〜を考慮に入れると

and

used to express surprise:

You're a vegetarian and you eat fish?

https://www.etymonline.com/word/vegetarian

vegetarian (n.)

1839, irregular formation from vegetable (n.) + -arian, as in agrarian, etc. " The  general use of the word  appears to have been largely due tothe   formation of the Vegetarian Society in Ramsgate in 1847" [OED].  As an   adjective from 1849. An earlier adjective was anti-carnivorous(1828).

https://www.etymonline.com/word/vegetable

vegetable (adj.)

early 15c., "capable of life or growth; growing, vigorous;" also "neither  animal   nor mineral, of the plant  kingdom, living and growing as a plant,"from  Old  French vegetable "living, fit to live," and directly from  Medieval Latin   vegetabilis "growing, flourishing," from Late Latin vegetabilis "animating,   enlivening," from  Latin vegetare "to enliven," from vegetus "vigorous,   enlivened, active, sprightly," from vegere "to be alive,  active, to quicken,"   from PIE root *weg- "to be strong, be lively." The meaning "resembling that   of a  vegetable, dull, uneventful; having lifesuch as a plant has" is attested   from 1854 (see vegetable (n.)).

any way you slice it

idiom

mainly US informal (also no matter how you slice it)

= in whatever way the situation is considered

He shouldn't have hit her,  any way you slice it.

= Whatever the situaton might be, he shouldn't have hit her.

≒ Taking everything into consideration, he shouldn't have  hit  her.

anyhow

= anyway

・whatever else is happening, without considering other  things:

Her parents were opposed to her giving up her course, but  she did it  anyway.

In conversation, anyway is also used to change the subject, return to an  earlier subject, or get to the most  interesting point:

Anyway, as I said, I'll be away next week.

What was he doing with so much of the company's money in his personal   account anyway?

cf. do without 無しで済ます

・used to give a more important reason for something that  you are saying:

I don't have time to go, and anyway it's too expensive.

I have no chance of winning the competition, but I'm going  to enter anyway.

Even if it is pouring with rain, the event will take place  anyway.

cf. somehow (or other)

・for a reason that is not clear:

I know what we're doing is legal, but somehow it doesn't feel  right.

He's overweight and bald, and yet somehow, he's incredibly  attractive.

You're very different somehow from what you used to be.

I am somehow happy.

・in a way or by some means that is not known or not stated

I'm not sure how, but somehow or other we'll raise the  money.

I'm afraid that somehow or other we spoiled the kids.

・by any means  possible

She was determined to finish college somehow or other.

=  She was determined to finish college by any means  possible

=  She was determined to finish college by taking (employing) any    necessary   means.

= She was determined to finish college in some way  (or  other).

A small dog had somehow managed to survive the fire.

She's managed somehow to procure his phone number.

anyroad

Northern English for anyway

as

= although:

Angry as he was, he couldn't  help smiling.

= He couldn't stop smiling  although he was angry.

cf. cannot help sth, doing

to not be able to control or  stop something:

I was obliged to  borrow ten thousand dollars from my  friends.

to be sure

idiom formal

This is not his best book, to be sure, but it is still worth reading.

https://www.etymonline.com/word/slave

slave (n.)

late 13c., "person who is the chattel or property of another," from Old  French  esclave (13c.), from  Medieval  Latin Sclavus "slave" (source alsoof  Italian schiavo, French esclave, Spanish esclavo), originally " Slav" (see Slav);  so used in this secondary sense because of the many Slavssold into slavery  by conquering  peoples.

Slav (n.)

late 14c., Sclave, from Medieval Latin Sclavus (c. 800), from Byzantine Greek  Sklabos (c. 580), from Old  Church Slavonic Sloveninu "a Slav,"probably  related to slovo "word, speech," which suggests the name  originally identified  a member of a speech community (compare Old ChurchSlavonic Nemici " Germans,"  related to nemu "dumb;" Greek heterophonos "foreign," literally " of different voice;" and Old English teode,  whichmeant both "race" and " language").

seldom 〜 anything = almost  not 〜 anything ですね。

cf.  take notice of = notice

take (have, get) a look at = look at 見る、目通しする

take (have, get) a peep at = peep  覗く

cf. the last person  (thing)  to do

・the least expected or  wanted person or thing:

≒ 絶対〜しないだろう  would  never do 〜

(Claire much cried の最上級)

not to be outdone

Pat was wearing an outrageous purple dress, so, not to be outdone, I put  on   my  new gold suit.

cf. put on = wear

  (wear - wore- worn)

to make matters worse

・used to say that something has made a bad or difficult situation worse

= to make things worse

Three of our players were ill, and to make matters worse, our main  scorer   had  broken his ankle.

Black Lives Matter.

to matter  =  to be of importance

The lives of the black people are as important as those of the other  people.

All Lives Matter.

Blue Lives Matter.

cf. what is more

more:

Also in phrases introducing a sentence or clause as expressing  something  more important than what has  preceded, e.g. what is more  (from OED 2nd  edition)

She is young, and what is  more, very beautiful.

She speaks English fluently, and what is more important, she can speak    French as well.

He is a good scientist, and what is still better, a good teacher.

= His being a good teacher is still better than his being a good scientist.

cf. what is worse

He'd been  overweighed since his childhood, and to make matters worse,   became bald a few years ago.

cf. better yet

I wanna see you at Shinjuke,  better yet at Shibuya.

→I can see you at Shinjuke,  but it's still better at Shibuya.

→ I'd like to see you at Shibuta rather than at Shinjuku.

・considering everything that has an effect on a situation, so that a  fair    judgment  can be made:

to say nothing of

・and in addition there is:

= She knows French and German, not to mension  English.

≒ She can't write a Hiragana, much less (still less) a Chinese character.

≒ She can't write a Hiragana, let alone a Chinese character.

≒ She can't write a Hiragana,  not to speak of a Chinese character.

She knows French and German, not to speak of English.

・to imply that the speaker is content with a more moderate statement than that which he might have  made

・and possibly even

It would be unwise, not to say stupid, to leave your first job after only   six  months.

it goes without saying  that

It goes without saying that among the magistrates there were some  individuals  who excelled in their  education and wider political horizon.

cf.excel in (at)

= To be superior or prominent in the possession of some quality, or in the performance of some action,  usually in a good sense; to surpass  others. Const. in, sometimes at. (from OED 2nd edition)

He excels all his classmates  in mathematics.

= He surpasses all his  classmates in mathematics.

◯ She excelled in playing  the piano.

X She excelled in well playing the piano.

X She excelled in better  playing the piano.

X She excelled in better  playing the piano.

→She excelled in playing the piano, and actually she played the piano  much better than others.

◯ It goes without saying that among the magistrates there were some    individuals  who excelled in  their education and political horizon.

X It goes without saying that among the magistrates there were some    individuals  who excelled in  their higher education and wider political  horizon.

He excelled in political horizon and his political perspective was in fact   much wider.

He was excellent in that he had a wider political horizon.

in that = because です。

There ain't nobody like you.

Lynn Anderson

 (September 26, 1947 - July 30, 2015)

There’s Never Been Any one Like You There's = There  has

=  X I'm afraid our business is  not going to be awkward on this trip.

=  ◯ I'm afraid our business is going to be awkward on this trip.

≒ ◯ I'm afraid our business is not going to be very good on this trip.

≒ ◯ I hope our business is going to be very good on this trip.

https://core.ac.uk/download/pdf/228742481.pdf

20, pp.49-65, 1991-12-20

cf. irregardless = regardless

・despite; not being affected by something:

*irrespective of

・without considering; not needing to allow for

The plan for a new office building went ahead regardless of local  opposition.

I don't think children should be hit, irregardless of what they've done  wrong.

The legislation must be applied irrespective of someone's ethnic origins.

= The legislation must be applied without considering someone's ethnic  origins.

cf, supply

= to furnish or provide (a person, establishment, place, etc.) with what is  lacking or requisite

→It goes without saying that many of the details of this general picture -   especially  as   what  concerns the neuro-physiology of mysticism -  remain to  be  supplied.

= Many of the details of this general picture -   especially  as what concerns the neuro-physiology of  mysticism -  obviously ought to  be  supplied.

Much more still remains to  be done.

It goes without saying that the most severe cases of violence often  emerge  when both external and  internal controls fail to develop.

It goes without saying that this is a weighty and costly project but also  a  necessary one.

to return to the subject

To return to the subject, this is a document of a gifted scientist  that  gave us  a  racy description of  the university lives of the time.

cf. 関係代名詞 that は a  document に掛かります。

To return to the subject, this is a document of a gifted scientist  and it  has given us  a  racy  description of the university lives of the time.

To return to our former subject, what has become of the scientist?

cf. become of = be the fate  of 〜の運命になる

What has become of him?

What will become of him?

Now let's return to the main subject.

cf. I want to come (go) back to the subject, ...

Let’s get back on track.

Let’s go (get) back to the original topic (subject, conversation).

Let’s move back to what we  were talking about earlier.

not to change the subject, but 話が変わって済まないが

Not to change the subject, but I'm starting to get a little thirsty.

Not to change the subject, but your mother visited yesterday.

cf. By the way

cf. This is off the topic, but.

needless to say

cf. extoll = to praise highly

cf. as long as

= so long as. during the time  that; through the period that:

・provided that:

・seeing that; since:

As long as you're going to the grocery anyway, buy me a pint of ice cream.

Needless to say, these three requirements must be satisfied for the  dialect  where auxiliary does arise.

*the dialect at (in) the place where 〜の場所に於ける方言の、 at (in) the  place が省略されていますね。

You were busy writing a report the last time (that, when) I met you.

*the way how とはせずに、 the way か how の単独で用いるのが普通です。

*更には、(主節の意味上の主語と同じであれば) when to do, where to do  (go, live), how to do の短縮形を取り、what to do, which to do などと同様に名詞句化する場合も出て来ます。

I remember the place at  which I first met her.

= I remember the place  where I first met her.

= I remember the place I first met her.

→I remember where I first  met her

I recall the name of the town  where I ought to live

= I recall the name of the  town where to live

= I recall the name of the  town in which  I ought to live.

= I recall the name of the  town which  I ought to live in.

= I recall the name of the  town  to live in

strictly speaking

*to be more precise

There was a good turnout for the meeting - twelve of us, to be precise.

*twelve of us の of は同格を表す of

Strictly speaking, Great Britain consists of Scotland, Wales, and  England,  and the United Kingdom consists of Great Britain and Northern  Ireland.

When the more precise vocabulary is available, vagueness can be   reduced, but strictly speaking, it is not eliminated.

Strictly speaking, because our study only concerned a non-clinical  sample, our conclusions should only  address non-pathological functioning.

our conclusions should probably only address non-pathological  functioning

cf. address

〈問題などを〉扱う to deal with.

The article  addresses the issue of birth control.

= The article  deals with   (or discuss) the issue of birth control.

・said when you are judging one thing in comparison with other things:

Relatively speaking, it's a fairly poor country.

*the act of saying clearly and honestly what you think without trying to  be polite:

It's time for some plain speaking.

cf. it's time for 〜 さあ、〜の時間だよ

Roughly speaking, that is the state of the case.

He weighs 120 kg, roughly speaking.

= He weighs roughly 120 kg.

因みにここの  relativeは、文法用語であり、relating or referring to an  antecedent term (先行する用語に関係する)、の意味で、例えば relative pronoun.

Weather permitting, we will have a barbecue tomorrow.

→If the weather permits us to have a barbecue tomorrow, we will do it.

All things considered, it's  not a bad idea.

→ When (If) all things are  considered, it's not a bad idea.

This being the case, let  us go.

→ Since this is the case, let  us   go.

The referee having finally  arrived, the game began.

→ After the referee had finally arrived, the game began.

→ Finally the referee arrived, and then the game began.

She always  talks a lot, but  she is not so articulate.

cf. It can't be helped.

cf. I can't help it.

I keep thinking about her. I just can't help it.

=  I just can't help keeping thinking about her.

I know I shouldn't  eat ramen noodle due to hypertension. but I can't help it.

= I can't help  eating ramen noodle although I know  I shouldn't do it due to hypertension.

= I can't stop (controll) my eating ramen noodle although I know  I shouldn't do it due to hypertension.

It can't be helped.

cf. can't but do = surely do  〜以外に無い、必ず〜する

cf. had better do

その場合は have to do, must を使います。

cf. had better not do

It’s five o’clock. I’d better go now before the traffic gets too bad.

The democratic movement had better concentrate on the immediate issues of the economy and security.  (more formal)

She’d better get here soon or she’ll miss the opening ceremony.

Had I better speak to Joan first before I send this form off? What do you think?

Had we better leave a note for the delivery guy to take the parcel next door?

Hadn’t we better ring the school and tell them Liam is sick?

cf. be supposed to do

・to be expected or designed; required or permitted (fol. by an infinitive verb):

The machine is supposed to make noise. I'm not supposed to run fast.

Kazimo

Even as a black person growing up in America, in middle school I too was  told   I wasn't black enough or I didn't act or sound black, by otherblack  people. I  remember I was asked what type of music I liked and I said  everything, except  I'm not fond of rap music. The other kids said Iwasn't  black because of that,  it's stupid how black people have it ingrained in them  from young how  they're  suppose to act according tostereotypes.

最後の they're  suppose to act はthey're  supposed to act の間違いです。

be obliged to do,  have to do,  have no choice but to do

be obliged to do

I couldn't help   borrowing  ten  thousand dollar from her.

I could not stop  (or control)  borrowing ten thousand dollar  from her.

I couldn't but borrow ten  thousand dollar from her.

= It was certain that I should borrow ten thousand dollars from her.

= It was inevitable that I should borrow ten thousand dollars from her.

cf. inevitable

= sure to occur, happen or come, unable to be avoided, certain

 be obliged to do を用い、

I was obliged to  borrow ten  thousand dollars from her.

= Circumstances (Necessity) obliged me to  borrow ten thousand dollars

 from  her.

I  was obliged to  receive  help  from enemy.

be to do の表現にも be obliged to do、have to do の意味を含む用法があります。

cf. https://www.kensvetblog.net/column/202004/20200405/

have to do

・to need to or be forced to; must: 〜する必要がある、必ず〜せねばならない

I have to go to  Vermont  tomorrow.

But the moment the children tried to join in they    had  toplay by  themselves,

- James Matthew Barrie 『

have no choice but to do

In light of problems we're having, we have no choice but to close the business.

= In light of problems we're having, we just have to close the  business.

cf. in light of  = because of

Although sufficiently  taking into account of the circumstances around    the defendant, his criminal  liability still remains exceedingly serious.  Therefore, the   present court has no choice but to approve,  in  accordance with the second instance, the judgement of the death  sentencethat the court of first  instance has passed on his case.

cf. ought to do

・used to show when it is necessary or would be a good thing to perform the  activity referred to by the  following verb:

You ought to be kinder to him.

= You should  be kinder to him.

We ought not/oughtn't to have agreed without knowing what it would cost.

= We shouldn't have agreed without knowing what it would cost.

"We ought to be getting ready now." "Yes, I guess we ought (to)."

Students ought not to do that sort of thing

If there's any doubt about the rocket's engines, we ought to cancel the  launch.

Whoever uprooted that tree ought to be ashamed of themselves.

I'm surprised at you behaving so badly - you ought to know better.

cf. know better than to do  〜しない程度の分別はある

You ought to know better.

You should know better.

頼んで遣って貰う get someone to do, have something done、

 自発性に任せる let someone/something do

cannot help doing

cannot help sth (sth = something)

cannot but do

cannot help but do

cannot avoid doing

be obliged to do

be compelled to do

be forced to do

be forced into sth

do sth under  compulsion

cannot help doing,  cannot but do

cannot help sth, doing

・to not be able to control or  stop something:

= cannot controll  (stop)  sth  (doing) <sth = something>

"Stop laughing!" "I can’t  help it!"

It was awful, but I couldn't  help laughing.

I can't help thinking she'd be  better off without him.

= My true feeling is that she'd be  better off without him.

help = stop, controll と考えます。

cannot but do

formal

= cannot help but do

・used to say that something  will certainly happen:

= (will)  certainly do

= It is certain that

If we persevere, we cannot  but succeed.

= If we persevere, we will  certainly succeed.

= It is certain that we wll  succeed if we persevere.

・to persist in anything undertaken; maintain a purpose in spite of difficulty,  obstacles, or discouragement; continue steadfastly.

Such power, and..resources could not but appear formidable.

= Such power, and..resources  surely appeared formidable.

I cannot but be gratified by the assurance.

= I am surely gratified by the assurance.

To see him obviously framed

Couldn't help but make me  feel ashamed

to live in a land

Where justice is a game

→To see him obviously framed would surely make me feel ashamed to live in  a land  where justice is a game.

= When I see him obviously framed, I would surely feel ashamed to live in a  land  where  justice is a game.

cf. be ashamed to do 〜するのが恥ずかしい

be ahsamed of,  be ashamed  that も取り得ます

He could not but try.

= It was certain  that he should try.

We cannot but feel sorry for  the child.

= We certainly feel sorry  for the child.

≒ We cannot help feeling  sorry  for the child.

cannot help but do も用いられますが 本来は cannot but do と有るべきです。
