Verbs followed by an indirect object and a that-clause

　間接目的語 IO ＋that 節を従える動詞

Some verbs (generally those connected with reporting) canbe followed by

an indirect object plus a that-clause acting as the directobject:

以下の動詞 （大方はモノを報告する動詞） は＜間接目的語＋that 節＞を従える事が出来ます：

advice, assure, convince, inform, persuade,promise,  remind, tell, warn

advise

to give recommendations to someone about a decision or  course of action

　行動の決定や採るべき方向について人に勧める

〔advise that〕〈…するように〉忠告する

I advise that you (should)  leave here at once.

　直ちにここを立ち去るのがいいと思うよ。

〔advise someone that〕〈人に〉〈…するように〉忠告する.通告する

I advised him that he (should)  stay.

　私は彼にとどまるように忠告した。

We were advised that they  could not accept our offer.

　我々の申し出を受けかねると彼らに通告された。

assure

to inform positively, as to  remove doubt

　疑念を除去すべく肯定的に知らせる

to cause to feel sure

　確かだと思わせる

〔assure someone that〕〈人に〉〈…だと〉保証する，納得させる

I can assure you that he's  sincere.

　彼が誠実なことはあなたに請け合うよ。

= I can assure you of his  sincerity.

I was unable to assure her  that I loved her.

　私が彼女を愛していることを彼女に納得させることはできなかった。

convince

to bring by the use of argument or evidence to firm belief or  a course of action

　討論や証拠を通じて信念や行動の方向性を固めさせる

〔convince someone that〕〈人に〉〈…ということを〉確信させる，納得させる

He tried to convince me that  he was innocent.

　彼は自分が無罪であることを私に納得させようと努めた。

= He tried to convince me of  his innocence.

inform

to impart information to; make aware of something

〔inform someone that〕〈人に〉〈…ということを〉知らせる

She informed her parents  that she had arrived safely.

　彼女は両親に無事到着したことを知らせた。

= She informed her parents  of her safe arrival.

to tell someone officially about something

〔notify someone that, (of + something)〕〈人に〉〈…ということを〉公的に通知する

The school is required to notify parents if their children fail  to come to school.

　学校は子供達が登校して来ない場合に親に通知する様に要請されている。

Has everyone been notified of the decision?

　皆さん、その決定について通知されましたか？

We notified the police that the bicycle had been stolen.

　我々は自転車が盗まれたと警察に届け出た。

If you have any complaints, please notify the manager.

　ご不満な点がございましたら, どうぞ支配人にお申し出ください。

He was notified to appear in court.

　彼は出廷するように通知を受けた。

persuade

to influence or move another to do or accept something

〔persuade someone that〕 〈人に〉〈…ということを〉確信[納得]させる

I couldn't persuade him that  she was a sincere lady.

　彼女が誠実な女性だということを彼にわかってもらえなかった。

= I couldn't persuade him of  her sincerity.

〔persuade oneself  of〕 確信する

〔be persuaded of 〕 確信している

I persuaded myself of his  innocence.

　彼が無罪なのを確信した。

I was persuaded of his  innocence.

　彼が無罪なのを確信していた。

promise

to make a declaration assuring that something will or will  not be done

　何かが起きる起きないと請負い宣言する

〔promise (someone) that〕〈人に〉〈…ということを〉約束する

They promised (us) that the work should be done before  Saturday.

　彼らは(私たちに)仕事は土曜前までに終わらせると請け合った。

remind

to cause to remember; put in mind

〔remind someone that〕 〈人に〉〈…ということを〉思い出させる，注意する

Don't forget to remind him that tomorrow is a holiday.

　あすは休みだということを忘れずに彼に注意してください。

〔remind someone of 〕 〈人に〉〔…のことを〕思い起こさせる, 気づかせる

You remind me of your father.

　君を見ると君のおとうさんを思い出す。

tell

to put into words

to make aware or cognizant of something

　何かを気が付かせる、知らせる

〔tell someone that〕 〈人に〉〈…と〉言う

He told me that he liked baseball. （間接話法）

　彼は野球が好きだと私に言った。

×He told that he liked baseball. の表現は誤りで必ずIO を伴う。

= He said to me, “I like baseball." （直接話法）

= I was told  (by him) that he liked baseball.

[can，could などを伴って]〈…を〉知る，わかる.

One can tell (that) she's intelligent.

　彼女が聡明であるということはだれが見てもわかる。

warn

to make aware in advance of actual or potential harm,  danger, or evil

　実際の、或いは潜んでいる害や危険性、悪巧みについて前もって気が付かせる

〔warn (someone) that〕〈人に〉〈…だと〉警告する，注意する.

I warn (you) that it's dangerous.

　(君に)警告するがそれは危険だ。

= I warned you of its dangerousness.

He warned me that they were planning something against me.

　彼は彼らが私に悪だくみを企てていることを私に知らせてくれた。

= He warned me of their plans against me.

〔warn 目的語 to do〕 〈人に〉〈…するように〉警告する，注意する.

The teacher warned Tom to be more punctual [not to  cheat].

　先生はトムにもっと時間を守るように[カンニングをしないように]と注意した.

　 Ｓ＋Ｖ＋ＩＯ＋that clause の文型ゆえthat 節はＤＯ直接目的語ですが、

ＤＯが節（＝文）ではない名詞の場合は、Ｓ＋Ｖ＋IＯ＋of +DO　の様に of が入る例が見られます。

共に意味上はＳ＋Ｖ＋ＩＯ＋ＤＯ　の第四文型相当です。

　動詞の用例は個々に覚えるしか無く、これを踏まえて言うと、５つの文型なるものは＜意味上＞の把握の仕方に留まるものである事がご理解戴けると思います。動詞が、用例に拠っては前置詞 of を意味的に含んでいたり、含んでいなかったりと揺れ動く訳で、非英語話者を戸惑わせることになります。

　この点、膠着語である日本語は、＜間接目的とする語 ＋ に＞＋＜直接目的とする語＋（〜であること）を＞＋動詞であり、単純明快で合理性を有しています。

　that は省略可能です。

Verbs followed by a prepositional phrase and a that-clause

＜ to+ 目的語＞ ＋that 節を従える動詞

Some verbs can be followed by a prepositional phrase  and athat-clause acting as the  direct object

以下の動詞は＜前置詞句＋that 節＞を従える事が出来ます：

admit, complain, explain, mention, point out, prove,  recommend, say, state,  suggest, report

＜だれだれに＞を目的語ではなく、＜to+ 目的語＞として取る動詞です。

admit

to recognize or regard (often reluctantly) as being valid or  true

　価値や真実であると（いやいや）認める

〔admit (to someone) that〕〈…だと〉認める

He admitted to the court that he had lied.

　嘘をついていたことを彼は法廷に対し認めた。

complain

to express or feel  dissatisfaction or resentment

〔complain (to someone) that〕 〔…に〕〈…だと〉不平を言う，苦情を言う.

She complained (to me) that her husband drank too much.

　彼女は(私に)夫が飲み過ぎるとぐちをこぼした。

We complained to the committee that they had not kept us  informed.

　情報が常に知らされていた訳では無かったと我々は委員会に対して苦情を言った。

explain

to offer reasons for or a cause of

〔explain (to someone) that〕〔人に〕〈…ということを〉説明する.

I explained (to them) that we could stay no longer.

　(彼らに)これ以上滞在できない訳を説明した。

〔explain (to someone) wh.節 / +wh.節 to do〕〔人に〕〈…かを〉説明する.

He explained (to us) what we were expected to do.

　彼は我々にどんな期待がかけられているかを(我々に)説明した。

mention

to refer to something briefly  or casually

　手短に、或いは気軽に言う

〔mention (to someone) that〕 〔人に〕〈…と〉ちょっと言っておく.

She mentioned (to me) that she knew you.

　彼女は(私に)あなたを知っていると言った。

= She mentioned knowing you.

point out

to bring (something)  to notice　

　気が付かせる、意識に上らせる

〔point out (to someone) that〕 〔人に〕〈…ということを〉指摘する

I pointed out （to them） that the account had still not been  settled.

　勘定がまだすんでいないことを彼らに指摘した。

I’d like to point out to everyone that it will be expensive to  hire a concert hall.

　コンサートホールを借りるのはお金が掛かりすぎるだろうことを皆さんに指摘しておきたいと思います。

prove

to establish the truth or validity of by presentation of  argument or evidence

　討論や証拠の提示に拠り真実性や価値を確立する

〔prove (to someone) that〕 〔…に〕〈…ということを〉証明する.

These papers will prove （to you） that he is innocent.

　これらの書類は彼の潔白を君に証明するだろう

= These papers will prove (to you) him (to be) innocent.

recommend

to praise or commend (one) to another as being worthy or  desirable

　価値がある、望ましいとあるものを人に賞賛する

〔recommend (to someone) that〕 〔人に〕〈…するように〉勧告する，勧める.

The committee has recommended to the Prime Minister　that the consumption tax  (should) be  abolished.

　委員会は消費税を撤廃するよう首相に勧告した。

cf.〔人に〕〈人・ものを〉推薦する.

Can you recommend me a good doctor?＝Can you  recommend  a good doctor to me?

　いいお医者さんを推薦してくれませんか。

say

to express in words:

〔say (to someone) that〕 〈…と〉言う

（この表現は一般的ではなく、tell someone that が普通）

She said to me that she lived alone with her mother.

→She told me that she lived alone with her mother.

= She said to me, "I 'm living alone with my mother."

　彼女は母親と二人だけで暮らしていると言った。

state

to set forth in words; declare

〔state (to someone) that〕 〈…ということを〉述べる，明言する;言う.

He stated （to us）that the negotiations would continue.

　交渉は継続されるであろうと彼は述べた.

suggest

to offer for consideration or action

〔suggest (to someone) that〕 〔人に〕〈…することを〉提案する.

I suggested (to him) that the sum should　be paid  immediately.

その金はさっそく支払ってはどうかと(彼に)持ちかけた。

= I suggested (his) paying the sum immediately

She suggested (to me) that we should　go to the theater.

= She suggested going to the theater.

　彼女は劇を見に行ってはと言い出した。

Those seagulls suggest that land is not distant.

report

to carry and repeat, as an answer or message; repeat, as  what one has heard.

　聴いたことを他の者に繰り返す、返事やメッセージを伝達する

to relate, as what has been learned by observation orinvestigation.

　観察や調査により学んだことを関連づける

〔report (to someone) that〕 〔人に〕〈…することを〉報告する、伝える.

She reported (to us) that the police finally arrested  the  suspect.

　彼女は警察が容疑者を遂に逮捕したと報せた。

= She reported (to us) the police to have finally arrested  the suspect.

= She reported (to us) the police having finally arrested  the  suspect.

= It was reported by her that the police finally arrested  the  suspect.

≒　The police reportedly  finally arrested the suspect.
