　思考連結詞の各語の説明に入ります。　その第１回目です。一通り頭に入れておくと学術論文等含め英文読解の大きな武器となり得る筈です。

accordingly

= in natural sequence, consequently, so その自然な流れで、その状況に従って、結果として、それで


＊consequently （結果として）が論理的或いは原因と結果の明確な関係を示すのに対し、accordingly は、＜その状況ゆえの自然な結果＞の意味合いを持ちます。


＊consequently,  accordingly  共に論文で多用されます。


He continued to have severe headaches and accordingly  returned to the doctor. 　

　彼は激しい頭痛が続いたため、再受診した



and

・used to join two parts of a sentence, one part happening  after the other part:

物事が起きた順に２つの文章を繋ぐ　　～してそれから～する


I got dressed and had my breakfast.

　服を着てから朝食を摂った。

＊服を着ることと朝食を摂ることを同時に行った訳では無く、最初に服を整えた訳です。


・as a result　結果として

Bring the flowers into a warm room and they'll soon open.

　花を暖かい部屋に移動しなさい。（その結果）すぐに開花するでしょう。


Stand over there and you'll  be able to see it better.

　あそこに立つともっと良く見えるよ。


・with certain verbs, "and" can mean "in order to"　

　～する為に （go, come などの特定の動詞と共に）


I asked him to go and find my  glasses.

私のめがねを見つけに行くよう彼に頼んだ。


Come and see me tomorrow.

　明日会いに来て。


Wait and see (= wait in order to see) what happens.

何が起きるか見るために待ちなさい。

→何が起きるか見守りなさい。


・informal

Try and get (= try to get) some tickets for tonight's  performance.

　今夜の演目のチケットを何枚か取るよう頑張ってれ。



and/or

・used to refer to both things or either one of the two  mentioned

=either "and" or "or":　両方或いは片方


If the game is cancelled, you will get a refund and /or new  tickets.

　試合が中止になった場合、払い戻しと新たな切符の両者或いは片方を受ける事が出来ます。

デカルトの頭蓋骨


ギョッとされたかも知れませんが、有名なデカルトの頭蓋骨の正面写真です。この論文

では脳の鋳型を取っての検証も行われています。カトリックのフランスですから土葬した

ものを掘り出したのでしょう。と言う次第でＤＮＡも良好な状態で取り出せそうですね。


日本人は遺骨偏執狂的なところがありますがキリスト教圏では死後は魂と亡骸に分かれ、

亡骸は単なる抜け殻で崇めるべき価値は有りませんので科学的な対象にし易い側面が

ありました。その結果、近代医学が発展し世界の人々が救われています。仏教支配下

のアジア圏は人体に対する科学的研究の禁忌強く、少なくとも医学の分野での人々の

幸福度貢献には著しく遅れを取りました。尤も、畢竟死すべき人間に対し、西洋的な医

療の施しに対する哲学的な疑義－特に確たる治療法が見いだされていない慢性的

疾患に対して－も最近では強まりつつある模様です。


consequently

= as a result　結果として、その当然の結果、必然的に、したがって

　　　　　　　　　　（原因と結果の明確な関係を示します）


I spent most of my money in the first week and  consequently had very little to eat by the end of the holiday.

　最初の週にお金をほぼ使ってしまい、その結果、休日の終わりには食べるのに使うお金は殆ど無かった。


Consequently, vegetable prices have risen dramatically  throughout the country.

その結果，全国で野菜の価格が劇的に上がっている。


All the shops were closed, and consequently we couldn't  buy  any food.

　店は全て閉まっており、当然ながら食べ物は１つも手に入らなかった。


Doctors are short of time to listen and consequently tend  to prescribe drugs whenever they can.

　医者は患者の話を聞く時間がなく、その結果可能な時はいつでも処方箋を出しがちだ。


There is inadequate childcare provision and consequently  many women who wish to work are unable to do so.

　子ども達に対する適切な公的支援が無く、その結果多くの女性が働きたくても働けない。

= not adequate or sufficient 適切では無い、不十分な


The company is trying to reduce its costs; consequently,  staff who leave  are  not  being replaced.

　会社側はコストを減らそうとしている。その結果、辞める従業員の代わりは補充されていない。


His explanation was full of technical jargon. Consequently,  nobody understood  it at all!

　彼の説明は技術専門用語ばかりだった。結果として誰一人全く理解できなかった。


cf.jargon(理解不能な)専門用語、内輪で通じる特殊用語、ちんぷんかんぷん、たわごと、方言

　*意味不明な用語で埒外に置かれる者にとっては technical  jargon ですが、中の人にとっては technical terms ですね。

jargon は古フランス語の jargon （小鳥のおしゃべり）に由来します。端から聞いていても意味不明と言う訳です。


She is always bad-tempered, and consequently doesn't have  many friends.

　彼女は常に不機嫌そうにしているので当然ながら友達はあまり居ない。


Consequently, elderly participants were not recruited as  the survey content would have been irrelevant.

　結果として年長の参加者は採用されなかった。と言うのは調査内容が見当違いのままだったからだろう。


The cotton-manufacturing industry fulfilled different roles in each town, and  consequently had a different impact on each political environment.

　綿花製造業は都市毎に異なる役割を果たしており、その結果、政治的環境に対してもそれぞれ異なる影響力を持っていた。



ergo　

adverb　formal

・a Latin word meaning "therefore" それゆえを意味するラテン語


It will tend to be the more prestigious universities that benefit; ergo, the existing hierarchy of universities will be reinforced.

　潤うのはより名声の高い大学群である傾向が強まるだろう。それゆえ大学の既存のヒエラルキーは強化される。


= The more prestigious universities will tend to benefit; ergo, the existing hierarchy of universities will be reinforced.　の強調構文


There was no justification for the war then: ergo, there is a real question about the legality of the action that was taken.

　当時その戦争を正当化することは出来ない状況に有った。それゆえ、取られた行動の法的正当性については真に疑義がある。


　Cogito,ergo sum.　ラテン語

　Je pense, donc je suis.　フランス語

　I think, therefore I am.　英語

　我思う、ゆえに我あり。
