「〜せざるを得ない」の英語表現�@

　＜せざるを得ない＞には、自分の心の内から湧いてくる感情、考えを抑えることが出来ない場合もあれば、他人からの強制の場合、或いは状況からその道を選択するしかない場合（オトナの事情と言う奴ですね）など様々なシーンが考えられます。

日本語で言えば、

　・湧き上がる気持を禁じ得ない、

　・遣りたくは無いが状況から或いは第三者から余儀なくされる、羽目になる、

　・物事の流れとして必然的にそうなる

　・第三者の意思、権力により無理遣りさせられる

　　　　など様々なシーンが考えられます。

使役の動詞（〜させる）に、

　他からの強制でさせる　make  someone do、

　頼んで遣って貰う get someone to do, have something done、

　自発性に任せる let someone /something do

 のグラデーションが存在するのとちょっと似た様なところがありますね。相手に〜させるのが使役であれば、相手側の立場のその受け身的な表現（受け身使役？）になります。英語ではどの様に使い分けているのか、用例を見ながら進めて行きましょう！

・to not be able to control or  stop something:

　自然に起こる動作や言及、湧いてくる感情を自分では制御したり止めることが出来ない

〜を禁じ得ない

= cannot controll  (stop)  sth  (doing) ＜sth = something＞

"Stop laughing!" "I can’t  help it!"

　笑わないでよ！　止まらないのよ！

It was awful, but I couldn't  help laughing.

　それは凄かったけど、笑うのを止められ無かったわ。

I can't help thinking she'd be  better off without him.

　彼が居なければ彼女はもっと良くなる（幸せになる）のにと思わざるを得ない。

　（心の底から沸いてくるこれが私の本音）

= My true feeling is that she'd be  better off without him.

＊help = stop, controll と考えます。

cannot but do  

formal

= cannot help but do

cannot あり得ない　　　but =  except 以外には

→〜以外にはあり得ない、以外には無い

→必ず〜となる、〜するしかない、〜するのは確実だ

＊ not + but で否定の意味が打ち消し合い強い肯定になります（２重否定）。

→ cannot but を surely, certainly に単純に置き換えると意味が掴み易いでしょう。

＊状況に追い込まれて余儀なくされる、との意味は全くありませんのでご注意を。

・used to say that something  will certainly happen:

　何かが確実に起こることを言う

　必ず〜する、〜以外はあり得ない、確かに〜だ

= (will)  certainly do

= It is certain that

If we persevere, we cannot  but succeed.

　やり続ければ我々は屹度（きっと）成功する。

= If we persevere, we will  certainly succeed.

= It is certain that we wll  succeed if we persevere.

cf.　persevere  屈せずにやり通す

・to persist in anything undertaken; maintain a purpose in spite of difficulty,  obstacles, or discouragement; continue steadfastly.

　困難、障害、落胆にも拘わらず企てたことをやり抜く、目標を持ち続ける

Such power, and..resources could not but appear formidable.

　その様な動力と資源は格別なものに見えざるを得なかった。

I cannot but be gratified by the assurance.

その保証（請負の言葉）には満足以外にはない。（OED からの用例）

= I am surely gratified by the assurance.

　その保証には私はしかと満足している。

cf. be ashamed to do 〜するのが恥ずかしい

　be ahsamed of,  be  ashamed  that も取り得ます

He could not but try.

　彼には試す以外の道はなかった。試すしかなかった。

= It was certain  that he should try.

　彼が試すのは確かだった

We cannot but feel sorry for  the child.

その子のことを同情せずにはいられない。

= 　We certainly feel sorry  for the child.

　その子のことをきっと哀れむだろう。

≒ We cannot help feeling  sorry  for the child.

　その子のことを思わず哀れまずにはいられない。

＊ cannot help doing と cannot but do は以上の様に同一では無くニュアンスが異なっています。

cannot help doing →　cannot stop  doing

cannot but do　　 →  (will) certainly do

　とサッと脳内変換すると良さそうですね。

＊cannot help but do も用いられますが　本来は cannot but do と有るべきです。

＊cannot help doing と cannot but do 共に、＜状況から余儀なくされる＞との意味は全くありません。英作文時での誤用で点が採れなくなりますのでご注意のほどを。
