day を用いた時間表現�U

過去・現在・未来に関する表現を含みますが、ここで纏めて扱います

in those days

= in the past:　過去には、昔は、当時は

= in the old (olden) days

= in old (olden) times

In those days people used to write a lot more letters.

　過去には人々はもっと多くの手紙を書いたものです。

these days ⇔ in those days

＊these days と異なり、前置詞 in は略されていません。

＊this, these 近いモノ、　that, those 遠いモノ　

　特定のモノを差すのでは無く比喩的に利用する表現です。従って in those days の  those は直接には過去の特定の時間を想定して利用する言葉ではありません。しかし話し手が頭の中に現在とは対比させた特定の時代の姿を思い浮かべている場合には ＜当時は、あの頃は＞と訳して正解です。

cf. days = the time during which anything exists or takes  place; period,time,  era.

　何かが存在し或いは起きる時間、期間、時代

The whole town bears evident marks of having seen better  days.

　街全体には嘗て繁栄を見た時代の明らかな痕跡が有ります。

= The whole town holds evident marks of having seen better  days.

* has を使うことも出来ますが、後半の having と重なりますので避けた方が良さそうです。

= times when one was better off  より暮らし向きの良かった時代

　過去に東大入試に出た表現

bear a resemblance to　= resemble

=  to look like or be like someone or something 〜に似ている、〜の様だ

She bears a faint resemblance to my sister.

　彼女は僕の姉妹にちょっとだけ似てるとこがある。

= She slightly looks like my sister.

＊聞き慣れない動詞＋名詞の表現に出くわした場合、その名詞を動詞化して考えるのも手です。

You resemble your mother very closely.

　君はお母さんにとても似ているね。

= You are like your mother very closely.

After the earthquake, the city resembled a battlefield.

　地震の後、街は戦場の様だった。

any day now

= very soon, especially within the next few days:　まもなく、数日の内に

The baby's due any day now.

　赤ん坊は２，３日の内に生まれるよ。

= The baby's expected to be born within a few days.

＊この表現の be due = be expected to be ready, be present, or arrive;  scheduled

現れる、到着する、産まれることが期待されている、の意味です。

＊赤ん坊の出産日に関する決まり文句に be due が使われます。

The plane is due at noon.

　飛行機は正午に到着する筈です。

= The plane is expected to arrive at noon.

by day

= when it is naturally light:　昼間に、　日中に

I prefer travelling by day.

　ぼくは日の高い内に旅行する方が好きだ。

by day ⇔　by night 　夜間に、夜に紛れて

The breaches made by day were repaired by night with  indefatigable activity.

　日中に作られた裂け目は夜間に疲れを知らぬ活動で修復された。

= incapable of being fatigued,  tireless

　疲れを知らない、精力的な、不断の

day after day

= repeatedly, every day:　繰り返し、何度も、毎日

The same problems keep coming up day after day.

　同じ問題が毎日持ち上がり続けている。

Time after time I heard the complaint, 'The Yankees treat us  shamefully, I  reckon'.

アメリカ人が俺たちに不名誉な扱いをしたと思う、との不平を私は再三再四耳にした。

Informal. to think or assume　思う、の口語です。

day and night

= night and day

= all the time:　昼も夜も、終日

You can hear the traffic from your room day and night.

　君の部屋からは終日往来の音を聞けるだろう。（騒音でうるさいだろう）

The bags were carried..day and night at the rate of about  five miles an hour.

その鞄は時速凡そ５マイルの割合で日がな１日運ばれた。

day by day

= every day, or more and more as each day passes:　

　毎日、１日が過ぎる毎にますます、日増しに

　日一日と彼は衰弱していった。

　或る日から次の日へと連続的に中断されることなく（状態が継続することを言う）

　後期ラテン語の immediatus "without anything between,"　間に何も媒介しない、から、接近した、時間的に即座の、直接の、の意味が派生。

= a period in history:　過去の（歴史上の）或る時期、時代、日々

I miss the days of high school.

　高校時代が懐かしい。

I miss the days of being single.

　独身時代が懐かしい。

We've been living on rice since the days of our forefathers.

　私たちはご先祖様の時代からずっと米を主食として来た。

to this day

= up to and including the present moment, up to now, continuing until today

　今に至るまで、この瞬間まで

To this day, I still don't know what happened.

　今日に至るまで、私は依然として何が起きたのかを知ってない。

To this day nobody knows what happened to him.

　彼の身に何が起きたのか今の今まで誰も知らない。
