end up

phrasal verb 句動詞

to finally be in a particular place or situation:

　（特定の場所や状況に）最後に行き着く、羽目になる

＊多くの出来事を経た上で、最後は（予期しなかったことに）相成る、終わる、とのニュアンスの言葉です。

They're travelling across Europe by train and  are  planning  to  end up  in  Moscow.

　彼らは列車で欧州を横断し最後はモスクワに行き着く計画です。

　（be + doing は未来形）

Much of this meat will probably end up  as  dog  food.

　この肉の多くは最後はイヌの餌と相成るだろう。

She'll end up penniless if she continues to  spend  like  that.

　その様な浪費を続けるなら彼女は最後は文無しに行き着くだろう。

＊この場合の penniless  は副詞ですね。文無し状態で、の意味です。

cf. continue to do, continue doing の両者が取れます。

After working her way around the world, she  ended  up  teaching  English  as  a  foreign  language.

　世界中で働いたのち、彼女は外国語としての英語を教える仕事に最後に行き着いた。

　最後は〜することに行き着く

＊この doing は end の目的語ではなく、〜しながら終わる、の副詞的用法と考えるべきでしょう。in doing の in が略されていると考えても良いでしょう。

end  （名詞） を用いた慣用表現

　名詞としての end には、物理空間や物品の行き止まり、端っこ、部分、時間の終わり、死を意味しますが、要はその先が無いことを表す言葉です。言葉としての発想法は日本語と同一ですが、end を目的、の意味にも使う点が唯一異なっています。しかしこれも最終目標としての意味合いからの転用でしょう。

bring sth to an end

to make something finish:

　終わらせる

Having agreed upon the  matter  of  payment,  he  brought  the  interview  to  an  end.

　（給与）支払いの問題に賛同したので、彼はインタビューを終わらせた。

Diplomacy has so far failed  to  bring  an  end  to  the  fighting.

　外交（交渉）は今までのところ戦闘を終結させることに失敗したままです。

≒ It continued to snow for three  days.

=  It snowed continuously  for three  days.

⇔ intermittently 断続的に

It snowed intermittently  for  three  days.

　雪は断続的に３日降った。

The group has met  intermittently  for  several  years  in  an  attempt  to  devise  a  long-term  plan.

　そのグループは長期計画を考案する為に数年の間断続的に会合を持っている。

cf. in an attempt to do = to  try  to  do 〜しようとして、〜する為に

They closed the road  in  an  attempt  (=  to  try  to)  to  reduce  traffic in 　the city.

　街の交通量を減らそうと彼らはその道路を閉鎖した。

＊動詞＋名詞表現で意味が取りにくい場合は、名詞を動詞化してまず理解します。

Everyone wishes the war would come  to  an  end  soon.

　誰もがその戦争がすぐに終わることを願っています。

= Everyone wishes the  war  would  end  soon.

Her office is at the end  of  the  corridor.

He wanted science students to take  an  interest  in  the  arts,  and  to  this  end  he  ran  literature classes at his home on Sunday afternoons.

cf.芸術の意味の art は不可算名詞で常に単数扱いになります。複数形 arts は人文科学、文系（科目）の意味になります。

at an end

To be at an end is to be finished:

　終わっている、詰んだ

His career was at an end.

　彼の職業人生は終わっていた。

The examination is at an end.

　試験は終わったよ。

end to end

If things are end to end, they  are all  facing  in  the  same  direction,  with  the  back  end  of  each  against the front end of the next one:

　前後を繋げて同じ向きに一列に

The new cars  were  lined  up  end  to  end.

　新車が同じ向きに一列に並べられていた。

end と組み合わされる頻用表現

deep end

This new collection of papers begins  and  ends  in  the  deep  end  of  philosophy  of  mind.

　この新論文集は心の哲学の一番深いところで始まりそして終わる。

→この新論文集は最初から最後まで心の哲学の一番深いところを扱っている。

desired end

This technique guarantees  tracking  of  the  desired  end-effector  path.

　この技術は人が望む最終効果器の道を追い求めることを保証する。

distal end

Its distal end could  then move  among  female flowers.
