・ be likely to is used to talk about how probable  things  are:

　物事がおそらく起きるだろう事を言う、多分〜しそうだ、多分〜だ、おそらく〜だ

* be 動詞に代えて、seem  likely  to  do,   appear  likely  to  do,   look  likely  to  do も使われます。

likely

expected to happen; probable: 起こる事が期待される、おそらくあり得る

＊be likely to do →　probably do と脳内変換して下さい。

[ + to infinitive ]

⇔ unlike;y 〜しなそうだ、起きなそうだ

＊not likely も同じ意味ですが、unlikely の方がより formal です。

If I don’t write it down, I’m likely to forget.

　それを書き留めないと多分忘れそうだ。

Are parents who have a lot of money likely  to  spoil  their  children?

　金を沢山持って居る親は自分の子供達を甘やかしそうですか？

＊It is often used to make comparisons with  words  like  more  and  less:

　likely はmore やless などの語を伴い、比較を述べるのに屡々使われます。

likely 形容詞限定用法　（形容詞＋名詞）

What's the likely outcome of  this  whole  business?

　 この全体仕事のあり得そうな成果はなんだい？

→この仕事全体の成果はどうなりそうだい？

A likely story!  皮肉表現、如何にもありそうな話だね

→そんな話有る訳ないでしょ！

I suppose that might happen  but  it's  not  very  likely.

　それはひょっとして起きるかも知れないが蓋然性は高くないと僕は思う。

cf. I suppose  〜ではと思う（根拠が薄いことを言う）

cf. might は may の過去形ですが、will に対する would と同じ謙譲表現の弱含みの主張になります。may が＜〜かも知れない＞、であれば、might は、＜ひょっとして〜かも知れない＞、の意味になります。

＊日本語では probability 蓋然性、即ち起こり得る確率、確からしさと、possibility 可能性 即ち有るか無いか、を区別せずに使いますので、上の文の和訳も、＜それはひょっとして起きるかも知れないが＜可能性は高くない＞と僕は思う。＞の和訳で通用しますね。

＊この様に、蓋然性と可能性を区別出来ているかで、当人がインテリか否かがすぐに判明しますので、皆さんもお気を付け下さい！

＊ここで確からしさも即ち蓋然性の程度を数字で表しましょうか。或る  native  speaker の考えですが、以下になります。

信じられる、本当にありそうな

＊possible 可能性としてあり得る、に、それを信じる、の気持が加わった言葉です。

＊和訳しにくい言葉ですので、適宜、It's  plausible  that , It's  possible  that  〜だと言う事はあり得る、と脳内変換して下さい。

There are many scenarios that  one  might  plausibly  imagine for  a  bio-terrorist attack.

cf. relatively + 程度を表す形容詞、は比較的〜だ、と訳します。話者の頭の中には比較対照とするものが思い浮かんでいることになります。この場合は、若者ではない集団と比較しているのでしょう。日本語でも同様ですが、＜比較的＞と言う表現は曖昧性を含んでいますね。〜と比較すると、と対象を明示すべきです。

Determination of which positions  are  likely  to  be  disease  associated  is  a  challenging  and  important  problem.

　どちらの地位が疾患に関与しそうかを決定することは、挑戦し甲斐のある重要な問題です。

While strong periodicities from  random  records  are  unlikely,  the  presence  of weaker pseudoperiodicity in a noisy signal is more likely.

＊この、〜の様だ、〜と同様に、の意味の、接続詞としての likeの用法は、informal な表現になります。
