to stop doing something, especially something  that  someone  else  does  not  want you to do:

　特に誰かが自分にして欲しくないことをするのを止めさせる、イヤな事、迷惑な事を止める、思いとどまる、思い留まらせる

＊自動詞として、desist  from  doing  =  stop  doing の用法として多用されます。

The soldiers have been ordered to  desist  from  firing  their g uns.

＊目的とは何かをしたいとの希望、意欲ですので、if  you  want  to  do,  because  I  want to do など、to 不定詞句を適宜節に置き換えると意味が取り易くなります。
