perish

(DIE)

to die, especially in an accident or by  being  killed,  or  to  be  destroyed:

特に事故、災害で死ぬ、殺害される、或いは滅ぼされる、滅亡する

Three hundred people perished in the  earthquake.

　その地震で３００名が死にました。

He believes that Europe must create  closer  ties  or  it  will  perish.

　欧州はより近い連帯を構すべきであり、さもないと滅亡するだろう、と彼は信じている。

quash

to forcefully stop something that you  do  not  want  to  happen:

　起きて欲しくないことを強制的に止めさせる、鎮圧する

to stop or block something from  happening:

　何かが起きるのを妨害する、遮る

The revolt was swiftly quashed by  government  troops.

　その暴動（反乱）は政府軍により迅速に鎮圧された。

The company moved quickly to quash  rumours /speculation  that  it  is  losing money.

　その会社は損害を出しているとの噂／風評を鎮めるために急いで引っ越した。

The Secretary of Defense tried to quash  speculation  that  he  was  planning to resign following the disastrous military defeat.

quell

to stop something, especially by using  force:

　力を用いて停止する、鎮める、鎮圧する

to completely stop or end something

　何かを完全に停止する、終わらせる

Police in riot gear were called in to quell  the  disturbances /unrest.

　戦闘服に身を固めた警察はその騒動／不穏を鎮圧する為に中に呼び入れられた。

This latest setback will have done nothing to  quell  the  growing  doubts  about the future of the club.

　この最近の打ち消しは、そのクラブについての今後に関する肥大化する疑惑を鎮めるのに何の役にも立たなかった。

＊if 節は仮定法で、現在のあり得ない仮定の内容を述べます。

They agreed to raise the trade embargo  if  three  conditions  were  met.

　もし３つの条件が満たされるのであれば輸出停止を止めることに彼らは同意した。

＊if 節は意味的に主節の動詞 agreed に掛かるのではなく、動詞 raise に掛かると考えるべきでしょう。構文的には、They agreed ＜to raise the tradeembargo if three conditions were met.＞と解釈すべきですね。ここに英語の言語としての曖昧性が見て取れます。

＊＜もし〜であれば（実際）同意した＞ は文章としておかしいものになります。

They would have agreed to raise the trade embargo  if  three  conditions  were  met.

　＜もし〜であれば同意しただろうに（実際には同意しなかった）＞であればまともな文章になります。

＊この様に考えると if  を用いずに、　

They agreed to raise the trade  embargo  on  the  assumption  that  three  conditions  were  met

　３つの条件が満たされるとの仮定の上で輸出停止を止めることに彼らは同意した。

　と記述するとスッキリするでしょう。

to quickly end something that is causing  you  problems:

　問題を起こしてる何かを即座に止める、鎮圧する、黙らせる、押しつぶす

A spokeswoman at the White House has  squelched  rumors  about  the  president's ill health.

　ホワイトハウスの報道官は大統領の健康が悪いとの噂を押しつぶしている。

staunch

(US also stanch)

to stop something happening, or to stop liquid,  especially  blood,  from  flowing out:

　何かが起きること、特に洪水や液体が流出するのを停止する、止水、防水する

The country's asylum laws were amended  to  staunch  the  flow/flood  of  economic migrants.

　その国の亡命者保護法は、経済移民の洪水を停止するように改定された。

Mike pressed hard on the wound and staunched  the  flow  of  blood.

　マイクはその傷を強く押さえて出血を止めた。

stem

to stop something unwanted from spreading  or  increasing:

to stop the flow of a liquid such as blood:

　望ましくない物事が拡散する、増大するのを停止する、流れをくい止める、せき止める、時流に抵抗する、棹さす

These measures are designed to stem the rise  of  violent  crime.

　これらの手段は犯罪の拡大を停止する為に立案されています。
