＊以下は全て、obligation  and  necessity 〜せねばならない、の用法からの派生表現と考える事が出来ます。

rules  and  laws

規則と法律の  must

＊不許可、禁止を mustn't,  must  not で表します。〜してはならない

＊これは formal,  informal 共に使えます。

＊ must not は　mustn't に比べると、not  を独立させて強調する分、より強い禁止 stronfer  prohibition  の意味合いが出ます。

＊can't を利用しても良いでしょう。

＊must には過去形がありませんので禁止の過去表現は  couldn't を使います。

＊短縮形 mustn't は禁止の意味に限定されますが、 must  not  には、〜の筈が無い、の意味用法でも利用されます。

You must not park outside the  entrance.

　入り口の外に駐車してはなりません。

= It's forbidden to park outside the  entrance;  it's  against  the  rules to park outside the entrance.

You mustn't make noise after 9 o’clock.

　９時以降は騒音を出すことは禁止されています。（現在の禁止）

You couldn't make noise after 9 o’clock.

　９時以降は騒音を出すことは出来なかった（禁じられた）。（過去の禁止）

× You must not have made noise after 9 o’clock.

　君は９時以降に騒音を出した筈が無い。（完了形を使うと全く別の意味になってしまいます）

You mustn't show this letter to anyone  else.

　君はこの手紙を誰にも見せてはならない。

Soldiers must obey orders.

　兵隊は命令に従わねばならない。

Candidates must answer two questions  from  each  paper.

　候補者は各新聞社からの２つの質問に答えねばなりません。

＊ must  と  must  not  は、法津、規則、禁止事項を表示する公の注意書きに良く見られます。

All passengers must present valid photo  identification  at  check-in  for all flights.

　全ての搭乗客は全フライトのチェックインに際して有効な写真付き身分証明書を提示せねばなりません。

You must give the bank a written  notification  if  you  wish  to close your account.

　もし口座を閉じたいのであれば、書面にて銀行に通知せねばなりません。

Luggage must not be left unattended (= it is  against  the  rules).

　荷物を行き先不明のままにしておくことは禁止されます。

Tickets must be retained for inspection, and  must  be  produced  for inspection on request by any authorised official of Bus Eireann. (Bus  Eireann is the name of the Irish national  bus  company)

　切符は検査に備えて保持し、またエーランバス社の認可された職員の求めに応じ検査のために提示されねばなりません。

invitations  and e ncouragement

　招待と励ましの must

＊丁寧な招待や励ましを表すために  must  を利用します。絶対に〜する方が良いよ、絶対に〜すべきだ

＊義務の念は全くありません。即ち、〜せねばならない、と訳すと間違いです。

＊これは、強い助言  strong  advise  の表現とも言えます。

= I  really  recomment  that

＊助言の意味なのか、義務の意味なのかは、前後の状況  context  から判断するしかありません。

＊この用法での否定表現、即ち  mustn't の用法 （〜しないことを勧める） は有りませんのでご注意下さい。mustn't は禁止　（してはならない）を表してしまいます。この場合は、　shouldn't 〜すべきではない、〜しない方が良い、を使います。

＊must  は過去形がありませんので、過去に〜すべきだったのに、と表現するには  should  have  の完了表現を用います。

You must come and stay with us one weekend.

　君は絶対に僕たちのところで週末泊まりに来いよ。

= I really recommend that youcome and  stay  with  us  one  weekend.

We must meet for lunch soon.

　僕らはすぐに絶対一緒にランチした方が良いよ。

You must try some of this chocolate cake.  It’s  delicious.

　このチョコレートケーキを絶対試さなくては駄目よ。美味しいのよ。（現在の推薦、助言）

= I really recommend that you try some of  this  chocolate  cake.  It’s delicious.

You should have tried some of this  chocolate  cake.  It  is delicious.

　このチョコレートケーキを試すべきだったのよ。美味しいのよ。（過去の推薦、助言）

You must go and see that film.

　その映画は絶対に見に行かないとね。

= I really recommend that film to you.（強い推薦）

　君はその映画は見に行かねばならない。

= You have to go and see that film. （他律的義務）

＊前後の状況 context によりいずれの意味か判定する必要があります。

If you go to Paris, you must take a walk by  the  river  at  night.

　もしパリに行くなら、夜に川辺を絶対に歩いた方がいいよ。

= If you go to Paris, I really recommend  your  taking  a  walk  by the river at night.

他人に助言を与える　 modal 　expressions

＊could  <  should  <  ought to  <  had better  <  must   の順に強制力が高まると考えて間違いではありません。

＊could は casual な気持で、〜したらどう？、意味で使われます。

＊ought to は米国では一般的では無く、特に若者の間では利用は退けられます。should に置き換えれば良いでしょう。

＊had better  は強い助言となりますが、従わないと否定の結果を招くとの意味を含みます。〜しないとマズい、の意味ですね。そうしないとマズいことになるぞ、罰を喰らうぞ、の意味から相手を脅す意味合いも出て来ます。

You could ask the pfofessor for help.

教授に助けを求めたらどう？

You should join a study group.

　何か勉強会に入った方がいいよ。

You shouldn't miss any lectures.

講義はどれも逃さない方がいいよ。

We'd better call the cops.

　オレらはサツを呼ばないとマズいんじゃあないか。

You had better move your car, or the police  will  give  you  a  parking ticket!

　車を移動しないとマズいぜ。さもないと警察に（駐車違反の）反則切符を切られるよ。

You must ask for help.

　きみは絶対に助けを求めるべきだ。

＊疑問文で　must を批判の意味で用います。

Must you keep playing that terrible music?

　君はその非道い音楽を演奏し続けねばならんのかい？　（いつまで非道い演奏を続けるつもりだ？）

Why must you mispronounce my name  every  time?

　どうして君は僕の名前を毎回間違って発音しなくてはならんのだ？ （いい加減俺の名を正しく発音しろ！）
