様態の as を使った表現  the same   as,  such  as

the  same ......as.....

同一種のモノ、性質である事を表す表現です。種類や性質が同じなだけであって、同一物ではありません。

　as は様態〜の様だ、を表す接続詞であることから理解出来るだしょう。

＊この as の後ろには本来は文が続きますが、意味が明確な要素は通常省略されます。

＊必ず定冠詞 the を伴います。即ち、the same の後ろに名詞が来ない場合は、same は＜同じもの、こと＞を意味する名詞になりますが、the same で同じ遣り方で、の意味の副詞句として機能する場合もあります。

＊that の代わりに頻度少なく who や which を利用する事もありますが、that, who (whom), which はしばしば省略されます。

＊詰まり、これら that, who, which は目的格の関係代名詞です。

＊関係代名詞ですので、〜である正にそのもの、同一物であることを意味します。

She’s the same person (that) I spoke  to  when  I  phoned  their  office.

　彼女は、私がオフィスに電話したときに話したのと同じ人です。

How was the course? Was it the same  teacher  (who)  you  had last time?

　コースはどうでしたか？前回と同じ先生だったのでしょうか？

＊same の意味を強調するには  the  very  same  +  noun とします。まさに同じ〜だ、の意味になります。

　この用法は最上級の強調である、the very + 最上級　の用法と同じです。

This is the very same hotel we stayed at  when  we  were  here twenty years ago!

　このホテルは、20年前に来たときに泊まったのとまったく同じホテルなんです。

＊節の中身を繰り返すのを避ける為に、 do  the  same 同じことをする、の表現を使います。

She bought her ticket for the folk  festival  online,  and  we did the same.

　彼女はフォークフェスティバルのチケットをネットで買いました。そして僕らも同じ事をしました。

＊以下説明の２と３は、これまで説明してきたように、様態なのか真実を提示しているのか明確には区別出来ないところがありますね。まぁ、それでも基本的な意味用法は様態です。

1.具体例を紹介する　=  for  example  〜などの、〜と言った

＊like に似ていますが、より formal であり、書き言葉により使われます。

＊即ち後ろに名詞を取る限りに於いてこの as は様態を示す前置詞扱いになります。

The shop specialises in tropical fruits,  such  as  pineapples, mangoes and papayas.

(… for example, pineapples, mangoes and papayas.)

　その店はパイナップルやマンゴー、パパイヤなどのトロピカルフルーツの専門店です。(・・・例えば、パイナップル、マンゴー、パパイヤなど)

They gave them gifts such as flowers and  fruit  and  sang a special welcome song.

2. 名詞の説明　（〜と言った、〜の種類の、〜の様な）

＊as の後ろに文を従えることも出来ますが、の場合 as は品詞的には接続詞になります。

＊such...as..を、such....that に置換可能だとする説明も時に見られますが、such ...that　にすると、下に説明する様に全く別の意味の構文（結果や程度を表す）になります。

＊Each member of the alliance agrees to  take  such  action  as it deems necessary.

　同盟の各加盟国は、必要と思われる行動をとることに同意する。

Britain is not enjoying such prosperity as it  was  in  the  mid-1980s.

　英国は1980年代半ばのような繁栄を享受していない。

Children do not use inflections such as are  used  in  mature  adult speech.

＊so...that と全く同様の構文ですが、 such  の後ろには名詞が来る、或いはsuch 自体が名詞である、ことが違いです。

＊原因と結果を表しますが、後ろから読み上げて、〜する様に（〜する程に）〜だ、の強調を意味するものとしても理解可能です。

＊文脈に合わせていずれか適宜判断します。

＊結果や程度を表す構文であり、 such...as... の様に、基本的に様態や例示を表すものとは異なります。

＊従って、such ...that..の that を  そのまま as に置換することは出来ません。これは、so...that 構文の that を as に置換出来ないのと同様ですね。

＊ 但し、such...as to 構文には、主語が主文主語とto 不定詞の意味上の主語が一致する場合に限り書き換え可能です。

＊同様に、so...that を、so...as to 構文に書き換える事も出来ます。

＊恐らくは、such a beautiful girl その程度にまでに美しい少女 → とても美しい少女、への意味の転用・拡大があり、強意の意味を持つに至ったのだろうと推測します。

＊so などと同様に、such も強意の＜とても＞の意味で利用されるのは極く普通のこととなっています。
