他の人や周囲の状況が違う、の基本的表現 （その１）

These words all refer to a way that someone or something is not the same as other people or things around them.

　ここに扱う言葉はすべて、誰かや何かが他の人や周りのものと同じではないこと、またその状態にあることを指します。

difference

　違い、見解の相違、量的差

＊differenceという単語は、これらの単語の中で最も広い意味を持ちます。異なるという状態を指すこともあれば、ある人や物が他の人と異なる特定の方法を指すこともあります。

＊事物が同じではない、見解が異なる、数量に差がある、の３つの意味があります。

1. (NOT THE SAME)

the way in which two things being compared are not the same, or the fact of not being the same:

　比較される2つのものが同じでないさま、または同じでないという事実、同じではない

We try to teach the kids the difference between right and wrong.

　私たちは子供たちに善悪の違いを教えるようにしている。

Can you tell the the difference between poisonous mushrooms and edible varieties?

　毒キノコと食用キノコの違いがわかりますか？

There's a big difference between starting up a business and just talking about it.

　ビジネスを立ち上げるのと、ただそれについて話すのとでは大きな違いがある。

The differences in survival were mainly due to risk factors which developed in the early stage of disease.

　生存率の差は主に病気の初期に発症した危険因子によるものであった。

There were no marked differences between the two groups of patients with respect to underlying condition.

　基礎疾患に関しては、両群間に顕著な差はなかった。

2. (NOT AGREEING)

a disagreement:　意見の相違：

They had a terrible argument a few weeks ago, but now they've settled/resolved their differences.

　彼らは数週間前にひどい口論をしたが、今はその相違を解決した。

have a difference of opinion with

　〜とは意見の相違がある

They had a difference of opinion about/over their child's education.

　彼らは子供の教育について意見の相違があった。

The president has admitted that they have a difference of opinion on this issue.

　大統領はこの問題について意見の相違があることを認めた。

I had a difference of opinion with my boss.

　私は上司と意見の相違があった。

It seems Tom and I have a difference of opinion about how much we're going to spend on the kitchen.

　キッチンにいくらかけるかについて、僕とトムとは意見の相違があるようだ。

3. (AMOUNT)

the amount by which one thing is different from another:

あるものが他のものと異なる量：

a(n) age/price/temperature difference

　年齢、価格、温度の差

There's a difference of eight years between them.

　彼らには8年の差がある。

I forget the exact age difference between Mark and his brother - they're two or three years apart.

　マークと弟の正確な年齢差は忘れたが、2〜3歳離れている。

We’d like better seats, but if the difference in price is too much, we’ll keep what we have.

　より良い席が欲しいが、値段の差が大きすぎるなら、今のままでいい。

I didn't realize there was such a big age difference between him and his second wife - she could be his daughter!

　彼と彼の2番目の妻との間にこれほど大きな年齢差があるとは知らなかった-彼女は彼の娘かもしれない！

different

＊異なっている、を表す最も一般的な形容詞になります。

＊ニュアンスの差は兎も角、違っている、を言いたいときにはこの語を使えば足ります。

1. not the same:

　同じではない、違っている、異なる

She seems to wear something different every day.

　彼女は毎日違う服を着ているようだ。

Monet and other Impressionists painted the same scene at different times of day to discover how the colors change in the different light.

　モネや他の印象派の画家たちは、光の違いによって色がどのように変化するかを発見するために、同じ場面を異なる時間帯に描いた。

Moreover, personal and institutional interpretation of an emotion could be quite different.

　さらに、ある感情に対する個人的な解釈と組織的な解釈はかなり異なる可能性がある。

2. informal

used when you think someone or something is unusual or shows bad judgment:

　誰かや何かが変わっていると思ったり、悪い判断力を示していると思ったりするときに使う、ちょっと変だ、アレだ

What do I think of your purple shoes? Well, they're certainly different.

　その紫の靴、どう思う？まあ、確かにアレだね。

He's different now that he's been to college.

　彼は大学生になったと言う次第で前とは変わったんだ。

→奴は大学に入ってからよそよそしくなりやがった。

＊教科書には A is different from B. の用法が掲載されていますが、口語、特に米国では、A is different than B. の表現が普通に利用されています。

＊勿論ですが、formal な場、文中での使用はお勧め出来ません。

This tea tastes very different than the one I usually drink. (or … very different from/to the one I usually drink)

　この紅茶は私がいつも飲んでいる紅茶とはとても味が違う。(または...私がいつも飲んでいるものとは/とても違う)

In British English, people often say different than before a clause, but many speakers consider this to be incorrect:

　イギリス英語では、節の前にdifferent thanと言うことが多いが、多くの話者はこれを正しくないと考えている：

His accent is different now than before he went to Australia. (or … different now from before he went to Australia.)

　彼のアクセントはオーストラリアに行く前と今では違う。(彼のアクセントはオーストラリアに行く前と今では違う。）
