In art and photographs, contrast is the difference  between  dark and light colors or dark and light areas.

アートや写真において、コントラストとは、暗い色と明るい色、または暗い部分と明るい部分の違いのこと。

＊by contrast は in  contrast よりも一般的ではありませんが、それでも普通に目にする表現です。

＊下記の in  contrast  to などと同じく、受験に必出の表現です。英作文にても使える様にしておいて下さい。
