Tough 構文に類似するものにはどの様なものがあるのか？　その２

enough ...to  構文１

＊enough とは、基本的に必要な分だけ丁度良くある、の意味です。

= the right/ appropriate amount

＊肯定的な良い意味で使われる語です。

＊この意味で too...が否定的な意味合いを持つのとは真逆です。

＊幅広く各種の形容詞、副詞を修飾可能です。

＊必要分を越えて余る、の意味は持ちませんのでご注意下さい。

＊但し、口語、casual 表現で、as much as,  more  than  is wanted:　必要以上だ、十二分だ、もう沢山だ、御免被る、の意味合いで頻用もされます。

＊この場合は、＜丁度良い＞の意味を越えて、不快の域に達していることを意味します。

I've got enough work to do at the moment, without  being  given any more.

　 今のところ、これ以上仕事を増やさなくても、十二分にやることがある。

That's enough! I won't tolerate any more  of  this  behaviour!

　もうたくさんだ！これ以上の振る舞いは許さない！

Enough is enough!  もう沢山よ！我慢の限界だわ、の用例も良く耳にします。

＊受験参考書定番の書き換え方ですが、

enough...to do を so...that で書き換える事も可能です。

He is  kind enough to help others.

　彼は他人を助けることができるほど優しい。

→

He is so kind that he helps others.

　彼はとても親切で、他人を助けることができる。

　（ニュアンスは幾らか変わります）

＊以下、この際！ですから　enough を利用した各種構文を一通り見て行きましょう！

＊自由自在に使える様に訓練して下さい。

＊to 不定詞の目的語が主語に相当する  enough...to 構文

＊to 不定詞の副詞的性格 （もし〜の場合には、〜することに対しては） が強く、一見 tough 構文と似た様な構造を取ります。

＊しかし、 pretty 構文、 too...to  構文 （次回以降に扱う） の例と同様に、仮主語 it を文頭に立てる構文、或いは to 不定詞を文頭に持って来る構文への書き換えが出来ません。

The football is soft enough to kick.

　そのサッカーボールは蹴る分には丁度良い柔らかさだ。

= The football is soft enough when/if kicked.

= The football is soft enough when/if you  kick  it..

Ｘ To kick the football　is soft enough.

Ｘ It is soft enough to kick the football.

None of the lakes was big enough to land a plane  on.

　どの湖も飛行機を着陸させるのに十分な大きさではなかった。

＊物体の性状を表す形容詞 softに対しては以下の様な文−tough 構文は作れません。ご注意下さい。

×The football is soft to kick.

＊ too 或いは enough を添えて書き直す必要があります。

＊上の構文が enough 利用の構文の中で特殊構文扱いされるものですが、これ以降に扱うものは、＜只の！＞構文になります。

＊to 不定詞を仮主語に取る  It is enough　to do 構文

Moreover, it would not be enough to simply  investigate  the relationship between constipation and quality of life.

　さらに言うと、便秘とQOLの関係を調べるだけでは十分ではない。

More could be said, but it is enough here to  have  mentioned the matter.

　もっと多くのことが言えるが、ここではこの問題に言及しただけで十分である。

　しかし、同時に同じ局面を経験していたというだけで十分なのだろうか？

＊一般的な  enough...to 構文

＊以下の様な enough ...to...の用例が寧ろ一般的であり頻用されます。

＊enough が副詞、形容詞、名詞として利用されるにしても、いずれも、〜するには十分だ、不足は無い、の表現になります。

＊to 不定詞の意味上の主語が文の主語に一致する時は何も加えません−この場合は主語とto不定詞が SV関係になります−が、異なる時には、for someoneto do  とします。

＊否定文 not enough to do で、〜するには十分ではない、不足する、〜するほどに〜ではない、の意味になります。

＊否定形も多用されます。

１．副詞としての enough

形容詞 + enough + to do

　〜するには十分に〜だ

be + 形容詞 + enough + to do

You're good enough to start a English  conversation.

　あなたには英会話を始めるのに十分な力があります。

Will the rope be strong enough to hold my  weight?

　ロープは私の体重を支えるのに十分な強度があるのだろうか？

I was old enough to work and earn money.

　私は働いてお金を稼ぐことができる年齢だった。

= I had reached the age when I could work  and  earn  my  own  money.

She told me it was brand new and I was  stupid  enough  to believe her.

　彼女はそれが新品だと言った。そして私は愚かにも彼女を信じてしまった。

He was also kind enough to summarise the areas  that  the  construction of the iron tower might help clarify.

　彼はまた、鉄塔の建設が解明するのに役立ちそうな部分を親切にもまとめてくれた。

The corresponding corpus should include most  of  the  words  from the lexicon and be large enough to obtain reliable estimates of word-frequency distribution.

　対応するコーパスは、語彙のほとんどの単語を含み、単語頻度分布の信頼できる推定値を得るのに十分な大きさでなければならない。

The same logic must apply to parties if their  internal  discipline  is tight enough for them to be regarded as unitary actors.

　もし政党の内部規律が、党員達が一枚岩の行為者と見なせるほど厳密であれば、同じ理屈が政党（自体）にも適用されるに違いない。

Client organisations are large enough to have  substantial  power resources and their members' interests are specific enough for their priorities  to be clear.

　顧客組織は十分な規模の組織であるため、実質的な経営資源を有しており、また、そのメンバーの関心は十分具体的であるため、優先順位が明確である。

註：

Mary is dishonest enough for there to be an  investigation  of  her activities.

　メアリーは、彼女の活動を調査するのに足るほどに不正直だ。

→メアリーは嘘つきだから、彼女の活動を調査するのももっともだ。

＊文字通り読み下していけば意味は分かりますが、ちょっと違和感を覚える文ですね。

＊虚辞の there を for を用いて to 不定詞の意味上の主語にするのは不文だとの指摘も実際あります。その場合は以下の様に書き換えます。

Mary is dishonest enough for an investigation of  her  activities  to take place.

Mary is so dishonest that an investigation of her  activities  should take place.

Mary is so dishonest that there should be  an  investigation  of  her  activities.

名詞 + 形容詞 + enough + to do

〜するには十分〜の

= 名詞 + which is/are 形容詞 + enough + to do

＊形容詞の後ろに enough to do が続く語順に注意して下さい。

Nevertheless, it had facilities extensive enough  to  support  a sizeable royal entourage.

　とはいえ、それは王室の側近をサポートするのに十分な広さの施設を持っていた。

They consist of hardware and software systems  powerful  enough to create realtime effects with no appreciable time delay.

　これらのシステムは、時間的な遅れを感じることなく、リアルタイムで効果を生み出すのに十分強力なハードウェアとソフトウェアで構成されている。

動詞 + enough

＊十分に〜する

We hadn't trained enough and lost the game.

= We hadn't trained a sufficient amont so as  a  consequence,  we lost the game.

　十分なトレーニングを積んでいなかったので、結果として試合に負けた。

He has not studied enough to pass his target  university  entrance examinations.

　彼は目標とする大学合入試をパスするのに十分な勉強をして来ていない。

動詞 + 副詞 + enough

The carrots were cut small enough to allow  them  to  be easily cooked.

　ニンジンは火が通りやすいように十分に小さくカットされた。

＊ここの small は、 into small pieces　小さく、の意味の副詞です。

We left home early enough to not be late for the  rendezvous.

　待ち合わせの時間に遅刻しないように、我々は十分に早く家を出た。

The time step was chosen small enough to  ensure  local  stability of the method.

　時間ステップは手法の局所的安定性を確保するのに十分小さく選ばれた。

= The time step was chosen to be small enough  to  ensure  the local stability of the method.

　時間ステップは、手法の局所的な安定性を確保するのに十分な小さくあるべく選ばれた。
