人物を positive に描写する形容詞  Positive Personality Adjectives２

　さて、前回シリーズまで、人格描写に利用される簡易な形容詞について解説して来ましたが、基本的な語ゆえ、多義性を持つ語が大半であり、ついでの勉強として、人格描写以外の意味についてもやや詳しく扱いました。今回からは、前回まででアブレた平易語、及び幾分かクラスを上げた人格形容詞を採りあげて行きますが、多義性を持つ語は自ずと少なくなり、それを反映させて、意味合いと例文も簡略に扱って行きます。まぁ、単語帳の様にリストアップした語についてアッサリと記述して行きます。引き続き丸暗記して下さい。

　positive, neutral, negative な形容詞に分けて順次解説して行きますが、これは飽くまで便宜的な分け方であり、文脈に拠っては別の区分に該当する場合もあり得ます。

人物を positive に描写する形容詞２

industrious　勤勉な

regurally working hard

　規則正しく一生懸命働く

= hard-working　働き者の

She's industrious and creative, so I'm  sure  she'll  be  a good architect.

　彼女は勤勉で創造力豊かなので、きっと優秀な建築家になるでしょう。

intuitive　直感的な

feeling that something is true although you  have  no  evidence  or proof of it

　証拠や証明がないにもかかわらず、何かが真実だと感じる

=  instinctive, spontaneous, innate, involuntary 　本能的な、自発的な、生来の、無意識の

A positive pregnancy test soon confirmed  her  intuitive  feelings.

　妊娠検査薬が陽性となったことで、彼女の直感的な予感はすぐに確かめられた。

My boss was rather intuitive, and could usually  tell  if  somebody  was going to be a good employee after the first day.

 私の上司はとても直感的なところがあり、通常は初日を終えた時点で誰が良い社員になるかを見抜く能力がある。

inventive　　独創的な

inventing things or has clever and original  ideas

　物事を発明したり、賢く独創的なアイデアを持つ

= creative, original, innovative, imaginative　創造的、独創的、革新的、想像力豊かな

It inspired me to be more inventive with my  own  cooking.

　それは自身の料理にもっと独創的になるよう私に刺激を与えてくれた。

The robotics company always tries to hire  inventive  people.

　そのロボット企業は常に独創的な人材を採用しようと努めている。

invincible 　　打ち負かされない　無敵の

incapable of being defeated; unconquerable

　倒すことのできない；征服不可能な

= unbeatable, unassailable, indomitable, unyielding　無敵の、攻め難い、不屈の、屈しない

He also had an invincible faith in the  medicinal  virtues  of garlic.

　彼はまた、ニンニクの薬効に対する揺るぎない信念を持っていた。

People are much nicer and easier to  understand  when  they stop trying to seem invincible.

　人々は、無敵であるように見せようとしない時、ずっと親切で理解しやすくなる。

Owning more than a quarter of the company,  he  seemed  invincible.

　会社の4分の1以上を所有していた彼は、無敵に見えた。

likeable　　好感の持てる

pleasant and easy to like.

　好ましく、好意を抱きやすい

He was an immensely likeable chap.

magnificent　　壮麗な

extremely good, beautiful, or impressive

　非常に優れている、美しい、あるいは印象的な

=  splendid, striking, grand, impressive　 輝かしい、印象的、壮大な、印象深い

...a magnificent country house in wooded  grounds

...森に囲まれた敷地にある壮麗な田舎屋敷

She is magnificent at making you feel you  can  talk quite  naturally  to her.

　彼女は、ごく自然に話せるようにあなたに感じさせるのが実に上手い。

mannerly　　礼儀正しい

well-mannered; polite; courteous

　礼儀正しい；丁寧な；礼節のある

The other young people on the ship were  friendly  and  mannerly.

　船に乗っていた他の若者たちは友好的で礼儀正しかった。

motivated  やる気満々の

inspired by a desire to achieve  something

　何かを達成したいという願望に駆られている

He is highly motivated.

　彼は非常にやる気がある。

・be interested in の interested と同様、〜された、との受け身の意味は消失し形容詞化しています。

The coach gave a motiavational talk before  the  match.

obliging　　親切な

willing to help or do favours for  others

　進んで他人を助けたり、便宜を図ったりする

Our car broke down while driving in  the  country,  but  some  obliging locals took us to the nearest mecchanic.

 田舎道を運転中に車が故障したが、親切な地元住民が最寄りの整備工場まで送ってくれた。

observant　観察力に優れている

good or quick at noticing things

　物事に気づくのが得意、あるいは素早い

= perceptive　洞察力がある

He doesn't talk much, but he's very  observant,  so  he's well aware of what's happening in the office.

 彼はあまり話さないが、非常に観察力に優れており、オフィスで起きていることをよく把握している。

outgoing　　社交的な

friendly and sociable

　友好的で人懐っこい

She's very outgoing.

彼女はとても社交的です。

...his outgoing behaviour.

...彼の社交的な振る舞い。

perseverant　　粘り強い

having the quality of continuing to  make  an  effort  to  do or achieve something, even when this is difficult or takes a long time:

 困難であったり長い時間が掛かったりする場合でも、何かを成し遂げようと努力を続ける性質を持つ

= persistent

Farming is for people who are  ambitious  and  perseverant.

　農業は野心的で粘り強い人のためのものだ。

persuasive　　説得力のある

likely to persuade a person to  believe  or  do  a  particular thing

　人を特定の事柄を信じさせたり実行させたりする可能性が高い

= convincing, telling　説得力のある

reflective　思慮深い

showing or involved in careful thinking

　熟考を示す、またはそれに関わる

= thoughtful, contemplative, meditative,  pensive　思慮深い、思索的な、瞑想的な、物思いにふける

Mike is a quiet, reflective man.

　マイクは静かで思慮深い男だ。

After hearing the news they sat in a  quiet,  reflective  silence.

　その知らせを聞いた後、彼らは静かで思索的な沈黙の内に座っていた。

resilient  回復力のある  打たれ強い

able to recover easily and quickly  from  unpleasant  or  damaging  events

　不快または有害な出来事から容易かつ迅速に回復できる

George Fraser was clearly a good  soldier, calm  and  resilient.

　ジョージ・フレイザーは明らかに優秀な兵士であり、冷静で回復力に優れていた。  

When the U.S. stock market collapsed  in  October  1987, the  Japanese  stock market was the most resilient.

resourceful　　問題解決能力が有る　機転が利く

good at solving problems or finding new  ways  todo  things

He was amazingly inventive and  resourceful,  and  played  a  major role in my career.

She didn't have much miney, but she was  resourceful,  so  her kids always had what they needed.

respectful　相手に敬意を示す

showing respect for someone

　誰かに対して敬意を示すこと

= polite, civil, mannerly, humble　礼儀正しい、丁寧な、礼節のある、謙虚な

The children in our family are always  respectful  to  their elders.

　我が家の子供たちは常に年長者に敬意を示しています。

The patient has the right to considerate  and  respectful  care.

　患者には思いやりと敬意を込めたケアへの（ケアを受ける）権利があります。

self-aware　自分を分かって居る

knowing and understanding their  own  personality  or  behaviour very well

　自らの性格や行動を非常に良く知って理解している

He often makes mistakes, but he's  self-aware,  he's  able to learn from them.

 彼はよく間違いを犯すが、自分では気付いており、そこから学ぶ能力がある。

self-disciplined　自己鍛錬出来る　

able to make yourself do things you  know  you  should  do even when you do not want to:

　やりたくない時でも、やるべきことを自ら実行できる

I faced up to the fact that I was not  self-disciplined  enough  to lose weight by myself so I got a personal trainer.

stupendous　　驚異的な

surprisingly impressive or large

　驚くほど印象的または巨大な

= wonderful, brilliant, amazing, stunning　素晴らしい、見事な、驚くべき、圧倒的な

He was a man of stupendous stamina  and  energy.

　彼は驚異的なスタミナとエネルギーの持ち主だった。

This stupendous novel keeps you  gripped  to  the  end.

　この驚異的な小説は最後まで読者を引きつける。

The Italian was quite stupendous.

　そのイタリア人は実に驚異的だった。

sympathetic　相手に思いやりのある

kind to someone who is in a bad  situation  and  show  that  you understand their feelings

　困難な状況にある人に対して親切にし、その気持ちを理解している

= caring, kind, understanding, concerned  思いやりがある、親切、理解を示す、気遣う

She was very sympathetic to the  problems  of  adult  students.

　彼女は社会人学生の問題に非常に思いやりを示した。

It may be that he sees you only as  a  sympathetic  friend.

　彼はあなたを単なる思いやりのある友人としてしか見ていないのかもしれない。

tactful　　機転が利く　　

having a good sense of what to say  to  people  to  avoid  causing offence or upsetting them

　人を不快にさせたり動揺させたりしないよう、適切な言葉を選ぶセンスがある

= diplomatic, politic, discreet, prudent　外交的、政治的、慎重な、思慮深い

He had been extremely tactful in  dealing  with  the  financial  question. [+ in]

　彼は金銭問題の対応において非常に機転が利いていた。

I decided it wouldn't be tactful to  order  another  drink.

　もう一杯注文するのは場にそぐわないだろうと判断した。

She is polite and tactful, and is able to  give  constructive  criticism in  a way that doesn't offend people.

 彼女は礼儀正しく、気配りができ、人を傷つけずに建設的な批判をすることができる。

＊日本語の＜空気を読む＞には場を丸くするために言うべき主張を止めて忍ぶ、の意味が有りますが、tactful には場を収めつつも自分の主張を言葉を選び巧みに通す、の大きな違いがあります。まぁ、外交官の高等戦術に等しいものです。これが出来る出来ないで人間の評価は大きく変わってくるでしょうね。

trustworthy　　信頼できる

reliable, responsible, and can be  trusted  completely

　信頼性が高く、責任感が強く、完全に信頼できる

= dependable, responsible　頼りになる、責任感のある

He is a trustworthy and level-headed  leader.

　彼は信頼できる、冷静沈着な指導者である。

And should he be considered  trustworthy  at  all?

　彼を信頼できる人物と見なすべきだろうか？

unassuming　　控えめな

quiet and not trying to appear  important

　静かで、重要そうに見せようとしない

=  modest, quiet, humble, meek　謙虚な、控えめな、慎み深い、おとなしい

He's a man of few words, very polite  and  unassuming.

　彼は口数が少なく、とても礼儀正しく控えめな人だ。

She has a gentle, unassuming  manner.

　彼女は穏やかで控えめな物腰をしている。

upbeat　明るい　informal

positive, cheerful and optimistic

　前向きで、陽気で楽観的

If you're feeling a little down, it can  be  good  to  surround   yourself  with upbeat people.

 気分が落ち込んでいるときは、明るい人たちに囲まれると良いかもしれません。

vivacious　活気あふれる

lively, exciting, and attractive （書き言葉）

生き生きとして、刺激的で魅力的な

= spirited, vital　　活気に満ちた、生命力に溢れた

She's beautiful, vivacious, and  charming.

　彼女は美しく、活気にあふれ、魅力的だ。

witty　機知に富んだ

using words in a smart and  funny  way

　言葉を使って賢く面白い表現をする

=  humorous, brilliant, funny　ユーモアのある、才気煥発な、面白い

His plays were very good,  very witty.

　彼の戯曲はとても素晴らしく、非常に機知に富んでいた。

She's a witty writer and her  books  always  make  me  laugh.

　彼女は機知に富んだ作家で、彼女の本はいつも私を笑わせてくれる。
