人物を negative に描写する形容詞  Negative Personality Adjectives１

　さて、前回シリーズまで、人格描写に利用される簡易な形容詞について解説して来ましたが、基本的な語ゆえ、多義性を持つ語が大半であり、ついでの勉強として、人格描写以外の意味についてもやや詳しく扱いました。今回シリーズからは、前回まででアブレた平易語、及び幾分かクラスを上げた人格形容詞を採りあげて行きますが、多義性を持つ語は自ずと少なくなり、それを反映させて、意味合いと例文も簡略に扱って行きます。まぁ、単語帳の様にリストアップした語についてアッサリと記述して行きます。引き続き丸暗記して下さい。

　negative な人格形容詞の数が著しく多いのですが、人間性の欠点を語るに傾く英語話者の精神的特徴が反映されているのかも知れませんね。ここでは約９０語を採りあげます。

　positive, neutral, negative な形容詞に分けて解説して行きますが、これは飽くまで便宜的な分け方であり、文脈に拠っては別の区分に該当する場合もあり得ます。

abrasive　荒々しい、乱暴な

= harsh, rude, cutting, biting, tough 過酷な、無礼な、辛辣な、痛烈な、厳しい

His abrasive manner has won him  an  unenviable  notoriety.

荒っぽい態度の所為で、彼は望まれない悪評を得た。

aggressive　　攻撃的な

・having a quality of anger and  determination  that   makes  them  ready to attack other people.

　怒りと決意に満ちており、他者を攻撃する準備ができている

=  hostile, offensive, destructive,  belligerent　　敵対的、攻撃的、破壊的、好戦的

Some children are much more aggressive  than  others.

　一部の子供は他の子供よりもはるかに攻撃的である。

・behaving in a forceful way because they  are  very  eager to succeed

　成功を強く望んでいるため、力強い方法で振る舞う

=  forceful, powerful, convincing,  effective 力強い、強力な、説得力のある、効果的な

He is respected as a very aggressive and  competitive  executive.

　彼は非常に力強く競争心の強い経営者として尊敬されている。

aloof　　よそよそしい

not very friendly and does not like to  spend  time  with other people

　あまり友好的ではなく、他人と過ごすことを好まない

=  distant, cold, reserved, cool 　冷淡な、冷たい、控えめ、クール

He seemed aloof and detached.

　彼はよそよそしくて無関心そうに見えた。

apathetic　　無関心な

not seem to be interested in or enthusiastic  about  doing anything

　何事にも興味や熱意を示さない様子

=  uninterested, passive, indifferent,  sluggish 興味がない、消極的、無頓着、だるい

Even the most apathetic students are  beginning  to sit  up and listen.

最も無関心な生徒たちでさえ、ようやく身構えて聞き始めている。

apprehensive　　近い未来の事を不安に思う

being afraid that something bad may  happen

　何か悪いことが起こるのではないかと恐れる

=  anxious, concerned, worried, afraid 　心配する、懸念する、不安に思う、恐れる

＊人格を描写する形容詞ではありませんがここに掲載します。

People are still terribly apprehensive about  the  future.

　人々は依然として将来についてひどく不安に思っている。

I waited apprehensively for him to  comment.

　私は彼がコメントするのを不安に思いながら待った。

argumentative 論争好きの

always ready to disagree or start quarrelling  with  other people

　いつも他人と意見を合わせず、口論を始めようとする

= quarrelsome, contrary, contentious, belligerent 喧嘩腰の、反抗的な、争い好きな、好戦的な

You're in an argumentative mood today!

　今日はお前喧嘩腰じゃあねぇか！

I don't like having discussions with her  because  she 's so argumentative.

　彼女はすごく論争好きだから、彼女と議論するのは好きじゃない。

arrogant　　傲慢な

behaving in a proud, unpleasant way  towards  other  people because they believe that they are more important than others

　自分こそが他者より優れていると信じているため、他者に対して高慢で不快な態度を取る

= conceited, lordly, assuming, proud　　尊大な、高慢な、思い上がった、誇り高い

He was so arrogant.

　彼は本当に傲慢だった。

That sounds arrogant, doesn't it?

　それは傲慢に聞こえるよね？

bad-tempered　　気難しい

not very cheerful and gets angry easily

= irritable, cross, angry, tense　短気、不機嫌、怒りっぽい、緊張している

He became bad-tempered and we  argued  constantly.

　彼は気難しい性格になり、私たちは絶えず言い争った。

They walked in bad-tempered  silence.

He's very bad-tempered. so most  of  people  stay  out  of his way.

belligerent　好戦的な

hostile and aggressive

　敵対的で攻撃的

= aggressive, hostile, contentious,  combative　攻撃的、敵対的、論争的、闘争的

...the belligerent statements from  both  sides  which  have  led to fears of war.

…双方の好戦的な発言が戦争への懸念を招いている。

He was almost back to his belligerent  mood  of  twelve  months ago.

　彼はほぼ一年前の好戦的な気分に戻りかけていた。

aggressive actions or behaviour that  are  likely  to  start  an argument or a fight.

　争いや喧嘩を引き起こす可能性のある攻撃的な行動や態度を取る

He expressed alarm about the government's  increasingly  bellicose statements.

　彼は政府のますます好戦的になる発言に懸念を表明した。

＊belligerent がいつでも実戦に打って出る用意がある、に対し、bellicose はその前段階の脅しの状態ですね。

big-headed   (informal)  お高くとまった（口語）

thinking they are very clever and know  everything

自分がとても賢くて何でも知っていると思い込んでいる

confrontational　　対立を招く

aggressive and likely to cause an  argument  or  dispute

The committee's confrontational style  of  campaigning  has  made it unpopular.

　委員会の対立を招く選挙運動スタイルは、不人気を招いている。

Riot police are on hand but have not  been  confrontational.

behaving in a dishonest way by making  otherpeople  believe  something  that is not true

The ambassador called the report  deceitful  and  misleading.

　大使はその報告書を欺瞞的で誤解を招くものと呼んだ。

The politician has been accused of being  deceitful,  but  she  isn't  worse than any of her collegues.

　その政治家は欺瞞的だと非難されているが、同僚の誰よりも悪いと言うわけではない。

defensive　　防御的な

behaving in a way that shows they feel unsure  or  threatened

Like their children, parents are often  defensive  about  their  private  lives.

　自分の子供たちと同じく、親もまた私生活について防御的になることが多い。

I don't ask him about his decisions because he's  so  defensive.

demanding　　要求の厳しい

・not easily satisfied or pleased

trying to control other people without any  consideration  for  their feelings or opinions
