人物を negative に描写する形容詞  Negative Personality Adjectives３

　さて、前回シリーズまで、人格描写に利用される簡易な形容詞について解説して来ましたが、基本的な語ゆえ、多義性を持つ語が大半であり、ついでの勉強として、人格描写以外の意味についてもやや詳しく扱いました。今回シリーズからは、前回まででアブレた平易語、及び幾分かクラスを上げた人格形容詞を採りあげて行きますが、多義性を持つ語は自ずと少なくなり、それを反映させて、意味合いと例文も簡略に扱って行きます。まぁ、単語帳の様にリストアップした語についてアッサリと記述して行きます。引き続き丸暗記して下さい。

　negative な人格形容詞の数が著しく多いのですが、人間性の欠点を語るに傾く英語話者の精神的特徴が反映されているのかも知れませんね。ここでは約９０語を採りあげます。

　positive, neutral, negative な形容詞に分けて解説して行きますが、これは飽くまで便宜的な分け方であり、文脈に拠っては別の区分に該当する場合もあり得ます。

insecure　　不安な　安全で無い

・lacking confidence because you  think  that  youare not good enough or are not loved

　自分が十分でない、愛されていないと感じるため自信がない

= unconfident, worried, anxious,  afraid　自信がない、心配、不安、恐れる

In effect she is punishing her parents  for  making  her feel threatened and insecure.

　実質的に彼女は、自分が脅かされ不安に感じさせる原因を作った両親を罰しているのだ。

Most mothers are insecure about their  performance  as mothers. [+ about]

　ほとんどの母親は母親としての自分の役割に不安を抱いている。

・not safe or protected

　安全でない、保護されていない

= unreliable, unstable, unsafe, precarious 頼りにならない、不安定、危険、危うい

Cellular phones are inherently insecure, as  anyone  can  listen to and record conversations.

trying to get involved in other people's affairs or  to  give  them  advice, especially when the advice is not wanted

judgemental　即断で人を批判する

form opinions of people and situations very quickly,  when  it  would  be better for them to wait until they know more about the person or situation.

　人や状況について、より詳しく知るまで待つべきなのに、すぐに判断を下してしまう

= condemnatory, self-righteous, censorious 非難めいた、独善的な、批判的な、

You must try not to be so judgmental about people.

　人に対してそんなに批判的にならないように心がけなさい。

You should not be judgemental about people.

　人を即断で批判するべきではない。

Machiavellian　　マキャベリズム的な  陰謀家の

often making clever and secret plans to achieve  their  aims  and  are not honest with people

　目的達成のため巧妙で秘密裏の計画を立てることが多く、人に対して誠実ではない

= scheming, cynical, shrewd, cunning 陰謀的、冷笑的、抜け目ない、狡猾な

...Machiavellian republicans plotting to  destabilise  the  throne.

…王位を不安定化させる陰謀を企てるマキャベリズム的共和党員たち。

...the Machiavellian and devious way decisions  were  made.

…マキャベリズム的で狡猾な手法が決定がなされた。

A Machiavellian plot was suspected.

manipulative　　狡猾な　策を巡らす

skilfully force or persuade people to act in the  way  that  they want

　巧みに人を操り、望む行動を取らせる

= scheming, calculating, cunning, sly　策略的な、計算高い、狡猾な、ずる賢い

He described Mr Long as cold, calculating and  manipulative.

　彼はロング氏を冷酷で計算高く策略的な人物だと評した。

The worker was promoted despite aggressive  and  manipulative  behaviour.

　その労働者は攻撃的で計算高い行動にもかかわらず昇進した。

materialistic　　物質主義的な

attaching too much importance to money and  material  possessions

　金銭や物質的な所有物に過度に重きを置く

= consumerist, worldly, grasping, greedy 消費主義的、俗物的、貪欲な

During the 1980s, Britain became a very  materialistic  society.

　1980年代、英国は非常に物質主義的な社会となった。

So, people in the private sector are more  materialistic  and  driven more by extrinsic factors.

したがって、民間部門の人々はより物質主義的で、より外発的要因に駆り立てられている。

miserly　　けちな

・seeming to hate spending money,  and  to  spendas little as possible

　出費を嫌うようで、できるだけ少なく使う

= mean, stingy, penny-pinching [informal],  parsimonious　けち、吝嗇、けちけちした［口語的］、倹約家な

He is miserly with both his time and his  money.

　彼は時間もお金もけちけちしている。

・very small

　非常に小さい

Being a student today with miserly grants  and  limited  career prospects is difficult.

　けちな奨学金と限られたキャリアの見通しの中に居て、今日学生であることは容易ではない。

moody　　気まぐれな　　憂鬱な

・changing  frequently one's feelings and  behaviour,  and  in  particular often becoming depressed or angry without any warning

　感情や行動が頻繁に変化し、特に何の前触れもなく落ち込んだり怒ったりすることが多い

= sulky, cross, wounded, angry　不機嫌、腹を立てた、傷ついた、怒っている

David's mother was unstable and moody.

　デイヴィッドの母親は精神不安定で気まぐれだった

Ray is a complicated, moody man behind  the  joking  front.

　レイは冗談を言う表向きの姿の裏で、複雑で気難しい男だ。

・ bad-tempered and is unwilling to enjoy themselves

　不機嫌で、楽しむことを嫌がる

= gloomy, sad, miserable, melancholy  陰鬱な、悲しい、惨めな、憂鬱な

I've been really moody over the last  couple  of  days.

ここ数日、本当に気分が落ち込んでいた。

・日本語の＜ムーディな＞は完全な誤用になります。

cf. mood   　in a good mood 良い気分だ  in  a  bad  mood　悪い気分だ　in a mood  怒っている、イラついている

Things got romantic and the mood was  great  with  her.

moralistic　　説教がましい　道徳主義的な　

making harsh judgments of other people on  the  basis  of their own ideas about what is right and wrong

　正しいことと間違ったことについての自身の考えに基づいて、他人を厳しく判断する

He has become more moralistic.

　彼はますます説教臭くなった。

To me moralistic films are just unbearable.

morbid　　病的な

very interested in unpleasant things,  especially  death,  and you think this is strange

= gruesome, sick [informal], dreadful, ghastly 陰惨な、気持ち悪い［口語的］、恐ろしい、ぞっとする

Some people have a morbid fascination with  crime.

nasty　嫌な

・behaving in an unkind and unpleasant  way

　不親切で不愉快な振る舞いをする。

What nasty little snobs you all are.

The guards looked really nasty.

　警備員たちは本当に嫌そうな顔つきをしていた。

She is so nasty to me when my brother  isn't  here.

I agree that the press is often too nosy about  a  candidate's  personal history.

obsessive　　強迫観念的な

cannot stop doing a particular thing  or  behaving  in  a  particular way

= compulsive, fixed, gripping, consuming　強迫的な、固定された、執着する、没頭する

Williams is obsessive about motor racing. [+ about]

obstinate　　頑固な

・very determined to do what they  want,  and  refuse  to change their mind or be persuaded to do something else

　自分の望むことを強く主張し、考えを変えたり説得されて別のことをするのを拒む

= stubborn, dogged, determined, persistent　頑固な、執念深い、断固とした、しつこい

He is obstinate and determined and will  not  give  up.

　彼は頑固で断固としており、決して諦めない。

She was a wicked and obstinate child.

　彼女は悪賢くて頑固な子供だった。

・difficult to move, change, or destroy

　動かしにくく、変化させにくく、破壊しにくい

opportunistic　　日和見主義の

taking advantage of situations in order to  gain  money  or  power, without thinking about whether their actions are right or wrong

　金銭や権力を得るために状況を利用し、自らの行動が正しいか間違っているかを考えない

Many of the party's members joined only  for  opportunistic  reasons.

　党員の多くは日和見主義的な理由だけで加入した。

(of an infection) caused by any  microorganism  that  is  harmless to a healthy person but debilitates a person whose immune system has been weakened by disease or drugtreatment

paranoid　　偏執的な

extremely suspicious and afraid of other  people

　極端に疑い深く、他人を恐れる

= suspicious, worried, nervous, fearful  疑い深い、心配性、神経質、恐怖心のある

I'm not going to get paranoid about it. [+ about]

　それについて偏執的になるつもりはない。

...a paranoid politician who saw enemies  all  around  him.

...周囲に敵ばかりを見出す偏執的な政治家。

parsimonious　渋ちんの　　吝嗇な

very unwilling to spend money [formal]

　出費を非常に渋る

= mean, tight, stingy　けちな、きつきつの、けちけちした

And there was another reason the  insurance  companies  might  be parsimonious.

　保険会社が渋ちんであるかもしれない別の理由もあった。

patronizing  上から目線の

speaking or behaving towards you in a way  that  seems  friendly,  but which shows that they think they are superior to you

あなたに対して友好的に見えるが、実際には自分の方が優位だと考えている言動やや振る舞いをする

= condescending, superior, stooping, loft　見下すような、優越感に満ちた、身をかがめるような、高慢な

＊人格形容詞ではありません

His tone of voice, so patronizing, so  self-righteous, filled  her  with rage.

　彼の声の調子、あまりの見下した態度と独善的な口調に、彼女は怒りに満ちた。

Their gaiety was infectious, and I mentally  ticked  myself  off  for my patronizing response to the club.

perverse　ひねくれた　　強情な

・strange and not what most people  would  expect  or  enjoy

　奇妙で、多くの人が予想したり楽しんだりするものではない

Jack was being perverse and refusing  to  agree  with  anything we said.

　ジャックは強情で、私たちが言うことには何も同意しようとしなかった

She took a perverse pleasure in hearing  that  her  sister  was getting divorced.

・having the effect of being, or intended  to  be, the  opposite  of what is usually expected or considered reasonable

・caring too much about small, unimportant  things  and  perhaps  that they are unnecessarily unkind.
