人物を negative に描写する形容詞  Negative Personality Adjectives４

　さて、前回シリーズまで、人格描写に利用される簡易な形容詞について解説して来ましたが、基本的な語ゆえ、多義性を持つ語が大半であり、ついでの勉強として、人格描写以外の意味についてもやや詳しく扱いました。今回シリーズからは、前回まででアブレた平易語、及び幾分かクラスを上げた人格形容詞を採りあげて行きますが、多義性を持つ語は自ずと少なくなり、それを反映させて、意味合いと例文も簡略に扱って行きます。まぁ、単語帳の様にリストアップした語についてアッサリと記述して行きます。引き続き丸暗記して下さい。

　negative な人格形容詞の数が著しく多いのですが、人間性の欠点を語るに傾く英語話者の精神的特徴が反映されているのかも知れませんね。ここでは約９０語を採りあげます。

　positive, neutral, negative な形容詞に分けて解説して行きますが、これは飽くまで便宜的な分け方であり、文脈に拠っては別の区分に該当する場合もあり得ます。

pompous　　尊大な

・behave or speak in a very serious way  because  they  think  they are more important than they really are

　自分が実際以上に重要だと考えているため、非常に真面目な態度で振る舞ったり話したりする

He was somewhat pompous and had a high  opinion  of  his  own capabilities.

　彼は少々尊大で、自分の能力を過大評価していた。

・very grand and elaborate

　非常に豪華で凝った

The service was grand without being  pompous.

　そのサービスは豪華でありながら、尊大さはなかった。

possessive　　独占欲が強い

・wanting all that person's love and attention

　その人物の愛情と関心を全て欲しがる

= jealous, controlling, dominating, domineering　嫉妬深い、支配的、強引、横暴な

Danny could be very jealous and possessive  about  me. [+ about/of]

　ダニーは私に対して非常に嫉妬深く独占欲が強かった。

He used to ring his possessive mother  several  times  a day.

　彼は一日に何度も独占欲の強い母親に電話をかけていた。

・not liking other people to use what  they  own

　自分が所有するものを他人に使われることを嫌う

pusillanimous　　臆病な　　[formal]

timid or afraid  

　臆病な、恐れる

= cowardly, timid, spineless, craven　臆病な、臆病な、腰抜けの、卑怯な

The authorities have been too pusillanimous in  merely  condemning the violence.

　当局は臆病のあまり、暴力行為を単に非難することすら出来なかった。

Pusillanimous = pusillis "very small"+ animus "soul"　とても小さな魂の：臆病な

Magnanimous　= magna "great" + animus "soul" 大きな魂の：寛大な

pretentious　　気取った

trying to seem important or significant, but you  do  not  think that they are

　重要そうに見せかけようとするが、実際にはそう思っていない

= affected, mannered, exaggerated, pompous 　気取り屋、作法にこだわる、大げさ、尊大

His response was full of pretentious nonsense.

　彼の返答は気取った戯言に満ちていた。

This pub was of a very different type, smaller,  less  pretentious.

　このパブはまったく異なるタイプで、より小さくて、気取っていなかった。

quick-tempered　　短気な

often getting angry without having a good  reason

　正当な理由もなくよく怒る

= hot-tempered, fiery, irritable, impatient　短気、気性が激しい、イライラしやすい、せっかちな

He was always quick-tempered but only  started  with  his  fists lately.

　彼は昔から短気だったが、最近になってようやく拳で殴り始めるようになった。

quirky　　風変わりな

rather odd or unpredictable in their appearance,  character,  or behaviour

　見た目や性格、行動がかなり奇妙で予測不能な

= odd, unusual, eccentric, idiosyncratic 奇妙な、変わった、風変わりな、特異な

We've developed a reputation for being  quite  quirky  and  original.

　私たちはかなり風変わりで独創的だという評判を築いてきた。

My new boss is rather quirky,  but I don't  mind  people  who  are a bit different.

　新しい上司はかなり風変わりだが、少し変わった人でも私は気にしない。

reckless  無謀な

acting in a way which shows that they do not  care  about  danger or the effect their behaviour will have on other people

　危険や自分の行動が他人に与える影響を顧みない態度で行動する

= careless, wild, rash, irresponsible 不注意な、荒っぽい、軽率な、無責任な

She loved to ride; on horseback, she was  reckless  and  utterly  without fear.

　彼女は乗馬が大好きだった。馬に乗ると、彼女は無謀で全く恐れを知らなかった。

He is charged with causing death by reckless  driving.

　彼は無謀運転による死亡事故の罪で起訴された。

resentful  恨み深い

feeling resentment

恨みを抱いている

= bitter, hurt, wounded, angry  苦々しい、傷ついた、傷つけられた、怒っている

At first I felt very resentful and angry  about  losing  my job. [+ about]

　最初私は仕事を失ったことに非常に恨みと怒りを感じた。

He turned away in sullen, resentful  silence.

　彼は不機嫌で恨みっぽい沈黙の中で背を向けた。

弱者が自身の無力さを認識しつつ、その不満や嫉妬を強者への恨みへと転換する心理状態。この感情は、直接表現できない無力感に伴う、根深い恨み、欲求不満、敵意として現れる。

まぁ、一種のゴマメの歯ぎしり状態ですね。

rotten 　気持が腐った、素材が腐った

・very unpleasant or of very poor quality  [informal]

・非常に不快、とても質の悪い [口語的]

= bad, disappointing, unfortunate, unlucky　悪い、がっかり、不運、不運な

I personally think it's a rotten idea.

　個人的には、それは腐った考えだと思う。

I had a pretty rotten day yesterday.

　昨日は本当にひどい一日だった。

What rotten luck!

　なんて運が悪いんだ！

・decayed and can no longer be used

　腐敗して使用不能な

= crumbling, decayed, disintegrating,  perished　崩れかけた、腐った、崩壊した、朽ち果てた

The smell outside this building is  overwhelming-like  rotten eggs.

　この建物の外の臭いには圧倒されてしまう…まるで腐った卵のようだ。

The front bay window is rotten.

　正面の張り出し窓は腐っている。

ruthless　　冷酷な

very harsh or cruel, and will do anything  that  is  necessary  to achieve what they want

　非常に厳しく残忍で、目的達成のためなら手段を選ばない

The President was ruthless in dealing with  any  hint  of  internal political dissent. [+ in]

　大統領は内部の政治的異論の兆候に対しても冷酷無比な対応を取った。

The late newspaper tycoon is condemned  for  his  ruthless  treatment of employees.

　故新聞王は従業員への冷酷な扱いで非難されている。

Her lawyers have been ruthless in thrashing  out  a  settlement. [+ in]

secretive　秘密主義の

liking to have secrets and to keep your  knowledge,  feelings, or intentions hidden

= eticent, reserved, withdrawn, close　内向的、控えめ、孤立的、閉鎖的

Billionaires are usually fairly secretive  about  the  exact amount that they're worth. [+ about]

　億万長者は通常、自身の正確な資産額についてかなり秘密主義的である。[

...the secretive world of spying.

self-centered  自己中心的な

only concerned with their own wants and  needs  and  never thinks about other people

　自分の欲求や必要だけに関心を持ち、他人のことは決して考えない

Sometimes she looked back and it all seemed  so  shallow  and  self-centered that she felt herself panic; other times it seemed just fine.

　時折振り返ると、全てが浅はかで自己中心的に思えてパニックに陥りそうになることもあれば、何の問題もないように感じられることもあった。

allowing oneself to have or do the things  that he/she  enjoy very much

Why give publicity to this self-indulgent,  adolescent  oaf?

To buy flowers for myself seems wildly  self-indulgent.

sleazy　　下品な

not respectable and are rather disgusting.  [informal]

　品がなく、可なり嫌悪感を抱かせる。[口語]

...sex shops and sleazy magazines

...風俗店や下品な雑誌。

The accusations are making the government's  conduct  appear  increasingly sleazy.

　告発により政府の行動はますます下品に見え始めている。

We all know that a sleazy boss hugging his  secretary,  causing her to vomit, is not on.

　上司が秘書を抱きしめて吐き気を催させるような行為が許されないのは誰もが知っている。

I have a friend who lives in Hollywood and we  like  going  out to all the sleazy dive bars.

tactless　　無神経な

likely to offend other people

　他人を不快にさせる傾向がある

= insensitive, thoughtless, inconsiderate, sharp　配慮に欠ける、思慮深いとは言えない、思いやりがない、きつい

Throughout his school life Darius was  tactless  and  egocentric.

　ダリウスは学生時代を通じて無神経で自己中心的な性格だった。

He had alienated many people with his  tactless  remarks.

　彼の無神経な発言は多くの人を遠ざけてしまった。

thickinformal　　頭の回転が鈍い

not very smart or perhaps slow to  understand  things

　あまり賢くない、あるいは物事を理解するのが遅い

My collegue is so thick I had to show her  to  use  the  coffee machine five times.

　同僚は本当に頭の回転が鈍くて、コーヒーマシンの使い方を5回も教えなきゃいけなかった。

touchy　怒りっぽい　扱い難い　過敏な

・easily upset, offended, or irritated

　すぐに動揺したり、気分を害したり、いら立ったりする

= oversensitive, irritable, bad-tempered,  cross　過敏、短気、気難しい、機嫌が悪い

You have to be careful what you say to  Kevin - he's  rather touchy.

　ケビンには言葉を選ばないとね−彼はかなり神経質だから。

He's very touchy about the fact that his  wife  was  married  before.

　彼は妻が以前結婚していたことについて非常に神経質だ。

・needing to be dealt with carefully

　慎重に対処すべき：

This is a touchy subject/issue/point, so  we'd  better  avoid  it.

これはデリケートな話題／問題／点だから、避けたほうがよい。

truculent　　好戦的な

bad-tempered and aggressive

　気性が荒く攻撃的な

= hostile, defiant, belligerent, bad-tempered 敵対的、反抗的、好戦的、気性が荒い

It is not because he has been truculent or  provocative  or  jingo, but because he has pushed the virtue of patience almost to a fault.

　それは彼が好戦的であったり挑発的であったり、あるいは国粋主義的であったからではなく、忍耐という美徳を欠点と言えるほどに押し通してきたからである。

However, it has been suggested that if trade  unions  are  too  troublesome, truculent and disruptive members may be sent to prison.

　しかし、労働組合があまりに厄介な存在となった場合、好戦的で破壊的な組合員は刑務所に送られる可能性があるとの指摘もある。

unmotivated　　やる気がない

acking motivation

　やる気が欠けている

No wonder they feel lost and unmotivated.

How much of it ends up in the same bins due  to  lazy  and  unmotivated council workers?

unpredictable　　何をしでかすか分からない　予測不能な

cannot tell what they are going to do or how  they  are  going to behave

= extraordinary, erratic, changeable, variable　異常な、気まぐれな、変わりやすい、変動しやすい

He is utterly unpredictable.

vain 見栄坊の　無駄な

・extreme pride in their own beauty, intelligence,  or  other  good qualities

　自身の美貌、知性、その他の優れた資質に対する極端な自負心を持つ

I think he is shallow, vain and untrustworthy.

　彼は浅はかで虚栄心が強く、信用できないと思う。

・futile, useless, pointless, unsuccessful

　無駄な、無益な、無意味な、失敗に終わる

The drafting committee worked through the  night  in  a  vain  attempt to finish on schedule.

　起草委員会は予定通りに終わらせるため徹夜で働いたが、無駄な努力に終わった。

I was singing in a vain effort to cheer him  up.

He glanced around in the vain hope that  there  were  no  witnesses.

vengeful　復讐心に燃える

feeling a great desire for revenge

= unforgiving, relentless, avenging, vindictive　許し難い、容赦ない、復讐を求める、恨み深い

The house is terrorised by vengeful ghosts.

　その家は復讐心に燃える亡霊たちにより恐怖に陥っている。

He did not think he was any more cruel, any  more  vengeful  than other men.

　彼は自分が他の人間より残酷でも、復讐心に燃えているわけでもないと思っていた。

vulgar　　（性的に）下品な  けばけばしく趣味が悪い

lacking taste or behave rudely

　品位に欠ける、または無作法に振る舞う

= uncouth, boorish, unrefined, impolite 無骨な、粗野な、洗練されていない、無礼な

He was a vulgar old man, but he never  swore  in  front  of  a  woman.

　彼は下卑た老人だったが、女性の前では決して荒い言葉を使わなかった。

'Don't be vulgar,' she reprimanded.

　「下品な真似はやめなさい」と彼女は叱った。

　今回でＢシリーズは終わります。接頭語、接尾語を除いた語感から、或いは類語から意味合いが推測出来る語も数多く混じっていましたが、意味不明の語もあったかと思います。いずれも native が極く普通に利用している語ばかりですので、ざっと覚えて戴ければと思います。人格形容詞で触れて置きたい語があと数百語残っており、Ｃシリーズとして採りあげようかとも考えたのですが、皆さんもお疲れかと思います（実は塾長も疲れました！）ので、一端は休止として、次回からは別の用語を扱いましょうか。
