話法転換のトレーニング （その１）

直接話法→間接話法

She said, "I saw this girl three years ago."

　彼女は「3年前にこの女の子を見かけたわ。」と言った。

She said that she had seen that girl three years before.

　彼女は、3年前にその女の子を見かけたと言った。

＊彼女が今日話した内容であれば ago がそのまま使えます。

He said, ''I wish I had never been born."

　彼は「生まれてこなければ良かったのに。」と言った。

He said he wished he had never been born.

　彼は、生まれてこなければ良かったと語った。

＊wish 以下の仮定法過去は時制の一致を受けません。

＊実際には

He said, ''I regret (that) I was born."

He said he regretted he had been born.

　になります。

My daughter said to the dressmaker, ''When will my new dress be finished ? ''

　私の娘は仕立て屋に、「新しいドレスはいつ完成しますか？」と尋ねた。

My daughter asked the dressmaker when her new dress would be finished.

　私の娘は仕立て屋に、新しいドレスがいつ完成するのか尋ねた。

Teacher said to her, "You must do as I tell you."

　先生は彼女に、「私の言う通りにしなさい。」と言った。

Teacher told her that she had to do as he told her.

　先生は彼女に、自分の言う通りにしなければならないと伝えた。

He said to me, "I don't quite agree with you."

　彼は私に、「君の意見にはあまり同意できないな。」と言った。

He told me that he didn't quite agree with me.

　彼は私に、私の意見にはあまり同意できないと伝えた。

He said to me, "Where does the difficulty lie?"

　彼は私に、「どこに問題があるのか？」と言った。

He asked me where the difficulty lay.

　彼は、どこに問題があるのかと私に尋ねた。

She said to me, "I don't understand what you mean.''

　彼女は私に、「あなたの言いたいことがわからない」と言った。

She told me she didn't understand what I meant.

　彼女は、私の言いたいことがわからないと私に言った。

間接話法→直接話法

The boy told me that he had dreamed a curious dream the previous night.

　その少年は、昨夜、奇妙な夢を見たのだと私に話した。

The boy said to me, "I dreamed a curious dream last night. ''

　その少年は私に、「昨夜、奇妙な夢を見たんだ」と言った。

Teacher told me to go out and not to come in till I was called.

　先生は、外に出て呼ばれるまで戻ってこないように、と私に言った。

Teachersaid to me, ''Go out and don't come in till you are called. "

　先生は私に、「外に出て、呼ばれるまで戻ってこないで。」と言った。

She exclaimed with delight that those flowers were pretty.

　彼女は、その花がきれいだと嬉しそうに叫んだ。

She said, "How pretty these flowers are ! ''

　彼女は、「この花、なんてきれいなんだろう！」と言った。

Lucy denied that she had refused to help him.

　ルーシーは、彼を助けるのを断ったことを否定した。

Lucy said, "I didn't refuse to help him."

　ルーシーは、「彼を助けるのを断ったなんてことはないわ。」と言った。

He said to us, "Let's play baseball."

　彼は私たちに、「野球をしよう。」と言った。

He suggested to us that we should play baseball.

　彼は私たちに、野球をしようかと提案した。

He told me that he had left his wallet at home and asked if I could lend him ten dollars.

　彼は、財布を家に忘れてきたと私に伝え、10ドル貸してくれないかと尋ねた。

He said to me, ''I've left my wallet at home. Can you lend me ten dollars?"

　　彼は私に、「財布を家に忘れてきたんだ。10ドル貸してくれないか？」と言った。

My sister told me not to be surprised to see what she was going to do.

　姉は、これから自分が何をするか見ても驚かないようにと私に言った。

My sister said to me, "Don't be surprised to see what I am going to do."

　姉は私に、「これから私が何をするか見ても驚かないでね」と言った。

Teacher told us not to waste our time.

　先生は私たちに、時間を無駄にしないようにと言った。

Teacher said to us, "Don't waste your time."

　先生は私たちに、「時間を無駄にしないで。」と言った。

He asked if he might use the telephone.

　彼は、電話を使ってもいいかと尋ねた。

He said, ''May I use the telephone ? ''

　彼は、「電話を使ってもいいですか？」と言った。

話法転換のトレーニング （その２）

大学入試問題から　（すべて１９８７年以前のものになります）

He asked the boys who they thought she was.  (慶応大)

　彼は少年たちに、彼女が誰だと思うかと尋ねた。

He said to the boys, "Who do you think she is?"

　彼は少年たちに、「彼女は誰だと思う？」と言った。

I always advise him not to do anything hurriedly, keeping in mind the saying " Make haste slowly." (東北大)

　私はいつも彼に、「急がば回れ」という諺を心に留めて、何事も慌てて行わないようアドバイスしている。

I always say to him, ''Don't do anything hurriedly, keeping in mind the saying 'Make haste slowly.'"

　私はいつも彼に、「『急がば回れ』という諺を心に留めて、何事も慌てて行わないで」と言っている。

＊Make haste slowly はことわざゆえ元々時制の一致の作用は受けません。

She said that she could have gone abroad if she had only wished for it. (神戸商大)

　彼女は、もし望んでさえいれば海外に行けたはずだと言った。

She said, ''I could have gone abroad if I had only wished for it."

　彼女は、「もし望んでさえいれば、海外に行けたはずだ」と言った。

＊that 節以下は仮定法ゆえ仮時制の一致を受けずにそのままです。

＊主語のみを適宜変換します。

He told them that he had met her the day before, but that he had not seen her since. (東京教育大)

　彼は彼らに、前日に彼女に会ったが、それ以来彼女を見ていないと伝えた。

He said to them, '' I met her yesterday, but I have not seen her since.

　彼は彼らに、「昨日彼女に会ったが、それ以来彼女を見ていない」と言った。

＊直接話法→間接話法の時は " "内の時制がひとつ昔になり、間接→直接の時は時制がひとつ今に近くなるのが原則です。

I said to her, "You look unwell. Have you seen the doctor ? " (神戸外大)

　私は彼女に、「具合が悪そうね。医者には行った？」と言った。

I told her that she looked unwell and asked if she had seen the doctor.

　私は彼女に、具合が悪そうだと伝え、医者に行ったかどうか尋ねた。

My father said to us, ''Let's go to the zoo." (大阪女子大)

　父は私たちに、「動物園に行こう。」と言った。

My father suggested to us that we should go to the zoo.

　父は私たちに、動物園に行くべきだと提案した。

I said that I wished I were rich enough to buy those pictures.  (慶応大)

　 私は、あの絵を買えるほどお金持ちだったらいいのに、と言った。

I said, "I wish I were rich enough to buy those〔these〕pictures."

　私は、「あの〔これらの〕絵を買えるほどお金持ちだったらいいのに。」と言った。

＊I wished と過去形になっているのは時制の一致ですが、I were は仮定法ゆえ時制の一致の影響を受けません。

To be always on time if possible was, he said, one of the duties of a gentleman. (奈良女子大)

　可能な限り常に時間通りにいることは、彼が言うには、紳士の義務の一つであるとのことだった。

He said, ''To be always on time if possible is one of the duties of a gentleman."

　彼は、「可能な限り常に時間通りにいることは、紳士の義務の一つである。」と言った。

I asked whether he remembered meeting me nearly four years before. (東京医歯大)

　 私は、彼が4年近く前に私と会ったことを覚えているかどうか尋ねた。

I said to him, "Do you remember meeting me nearly four years ago ? ''

　私は彼に、「4年近く前に私と会ったことを覚えていますか？」と尋ねた。

Yesterday a friend of mine asked me if I thought the pond near our town would freeze today. (室蘭工大)

　 昨日、私の友人が、町の近くの池が今日凍ると思うかと私に尋ねた。

Yesterday a friend of mine said to me, "Do you think the pond near our town will freeze tomorrow ?"

　昨日、私の友人が私に、「町の近くの池は明日凍ると思いますか？」と言った。

He begged his friend to wait there till he returned. (津田塾大)

　彼は友人に、自分が戻るまでそこで待っていてくれるよう懇願した。

He said to his friend, "Please wait here till I return."

　彼は友人に、「僕が戻るまでここで待っていてくれ。」と言った。

＊begged は「丁寧に」頼んだ、の意味になります。

He said, "I started out in haste, but I could not catch the train after all."

　彼は、「急いで出かけたが、結局電車には乗れなかった。」と言った。

He said that he had started out in haste, but that he had not been able to catch the train after all.

　彼は、急いで出かけたが、結局電車には乗れなかった、と言った。

On my arrival in Tokyo some days ago my uncle said to me, "Where shall I take you first tomorrow ? ''  (北海道大)

　数日前に東京に到着したとき、叔父が私に「明日はまずどこへ連れて行こうか？」と言いました。

On my arrival in Tokyo some days ago my uncle asked me where he would take me first the next day.

　数日前に東京に到着したとき、叔父は翌日、まずどこへ連れて行けばいいかと私に尋ねました。

"Arrange it in any way you please," said my aunt to Mr. Smith. (九州工大)

　「お好きなように手配してください。」と、叔母はスミスさんに言いました。

My aunt told Mr. Smith to arrange it in any way he pleased.

　叔母はスミスさんに、お好きなように手配するように言いました。

She said to me, "When will you come again ? Shal I be seeing you next week?"  (慶応大)

　彼女は私に、「またいつ来るの？　来週会えるかしら？」と言いました。

She asked me when I would come again and if she would be seeing me the next week.

　彼女は、私がまたいつ来るのか、そしてその翌週会えるかどうかを尋ねました。

＊next は「その次の」の意味になり the が付きます。

He said, "Do you like it?" She said, "Yes." (京都府医大)

　彼は「気に入った？」と尋ね、彼女は「ええ」と答えました。

He asked her if she liked it. She answered in the affirmative.。

　彼は彼女にそれが好きかと尋ねた。彼女は「はい」と答えた。

"What about going for a swim?" he said to me. (京都府医大)

　「泳ぎに行かないか？」と彼は私に言った。

He suggested to me that we should go for a swim.

　彼は私に、泳ぎに行こうと提案した。

＊What about はLet'sのように人をさそう形ゆえ、伝達動詞としては suggest 或いは propose を用います。

He ordered one of the robbers to go to the house and look around. (静岡薬大)

　彼は泥棒の一人に、家に行って辺りを見回すよう命じた。

He said to one of the robbers, ''Go to the house and look around."

　彼は泥棒の一人に、「その家に行って、辺りを見回してこい。」と言った。

He said to the boys, '' Don't make a noise."  (専修大)

　彼は少年たちに、「騒ぐな」と言った。

He told the boys not to make a noise.

　彼は少年たちに、騒ぐなと伝えた。

He said, ''I have already met the lady before."  (大阪産大)

　彼は、「その女性には以前会ったことがある。」と言った。

He said that he had already met the lady before.

　彼は、その女性には以前会ったことがあると言った。
