一般的に利用される　Reporting Verbs １

＊まずは、一般的に利用される Reporting Verbs をざっと触れて行きます。

＊以下おのおのの動詞について、学術分野−自然科学や社会科学分野−とは離れた、物語文を書く際に使える類いの幾らか文学的なレベルの、直接話法並びに間接話法の英文を掲載してあります。

＊ほぼすべて「三人称・過去」の語りを想定しています。

＊大まかなカテゴリーに分けて配列しています。

＊Reporting Verbs　にその修飾語を付ける例文にしていますので、自然な表現となる  <"...", S+V+M.> （M: 修飾語）のスタイルの例文が大半ですが、その場合は、それらすべての動詞は、<S+V, "..."> のスタイルも勿論取り得ます。

＊直接話法形式が取れるか否か、that 節が取れるか否かについて重点的に留意しつつ解説しています。

Ａ．発話系の Reporting Verbs  (Saying Verbs)

＊このグループの動詞は基本的に直接話法 ⇔　間接話法 の言い換えを自由且つ自然に行うことが出来ます。

＊但し、例外もあります。

１．中立的な 「言う・話す」系

＊日常的な場面には勿論のこと、formal な文、学術論文などに於いても多用されます。

say  言う、述べる    最も中立的で一番よく使う　Reporting Verbs です

to speak or write words

  直接話法

   "I’ll wait for you," she said, her voice barely above the rain.

   彼女は「あなたを待っているわ」と、雨音にかき消されそうなほど小さな声で言った。

   間接話法

   She said that she would wait for him, her voice barely above the rain.

   彼女は、彼を待っているつもりだと、雨音にかき消されそうなほど小さな声で言った。

＊「barely above X」で「X より"ほんの少しだけ"大きい」という文学でよく利用される比喩になります。

tell　　〜に言う、　話す、教える、伝える　　必ず相手が必要です

to give information to someone

   直接話法

   "Tell me the truth," he told her, not blinking once.

   彼は「本当のことを言ってくれ」と、まばたきひとつせずに彼女に言った

   間接話法

　　He told her that she should tell the truth, never blinking once.

    He told her to tell him the truth, never blinking once.

   彼は、真実を話してほしいと彼女に告げ、まばたきひとつしなかった。

add   付け加えて言う  前の発言に一言足す

to say something more

   直接話法

   "And don't be late this time," she added with a tired smile.

   「それから、今度は遅れないでね」と、彼女は疲れたような笑みを浮かべて付け加えた

   間接話法

   She added, with a tired smile, that he should not be late this time.

   彼女は、今度は遅刻しないでほしいと、疲れたような笑みを浮かべて付け加えた。

remark　　述べる、一言軽く言う

to say something, often briefly

   直接話法

   "You always come back when the cherry trees bloom," she remarked lightly.

　　　「桜の花が咲くころになると、あなたはいつも戻ってくるのね」と、彼女は軽い口調で言った。

   間接話法

   She remarked lightly that he always came back when the cherry trees bloomed.

　　彼女は、桜の花が咲くころになると彼はいつも戻ってくるのだと、軽い口調で言った。

comment　　手短に意見を言う、　ぽつりと言う　　論評する  コメントする

to give an opinion about something

   直接話法

   "You’ve changed more than this town has," she commented, looking around the empty street.

   「この町が変わった以上に、あなたは変わってしまったわね」と、彼女は人気のない通りを見回しながら言った。

   間接話法

   She commented, as she looked around the empty street, that he had changed more than the town had.

   彼女は、人気のない通りを見回しながら、彼はこの町以上に変わってしまったのねとぽつりと述べた。

mention　　述べる、話す、軽く述べる　さらっと述べる

to speak about something briefly

   直接話法

   "There was another letter," she mentioned casually, as if it meant nothing to her.

   彼女はまるで大したことではないという風に「もう一通、手紙が来ていたわ」とさらっと口にした。

   間接話法

   She mentioned that there had been another letter, then deftly changed the subject.

   彼女はもう一通手紙が来ていたことに軽く触れると、すぐに話題をそらした。

state　　公式に述べる、明言する

to say something clearly and formally

   直接話法

   "This is my last warning," he stated, every word clipped and cold.

    「これが最後の警告だ」と、彼は一語一語を冷たくかみしめるように言い放った。

   間接話法

   He stated, with every word clipped and cold, that it was his last warning.

   彼は、それが最後の警告であると、一語一語を冷たくかみしめるように言い放った。

explain   説明する  理由や内容を詳しく話す

to make something clear by giving details

   直接話法

   "I left because I was afraid of staying," he explained, not quite meeting her eyes.

    「ここを去ったのは、ここに居続けるのが怖かったからなんだ」と、彼は彼女の目をまともに見ようともせずに説明した。

   間接話法

   He explained, without quite meeting her eyes, that he had left because he was afraid of staying.

   彼は、彼女の目をまともに見ようともせずに、自分が去ったのはここにとどまることが怖かったからだと説明した。

describe　　描写する、説明する、様子を述べる

to say what someone or something is like

    間接話法

   　She described how the sky had been the color of bruised fruit on that evening.

  　 She described the sky as the color of bruised fruit that evening.

 　  She described the sky as being the color of bruised fruit that evening.

   　彼女は、その晩の空が傷んだ果実のような色をしていたのだと説明した。

＊describe は that 節は取らず「名詞句」や「wh節」を取ります。

＊that 節を使いたい時はその that をhow に換えてください。

　　直接話法

   　"The sky was the color of bruised fruit," she described softly, eyes far away.

   　彼女は目を遠くに向けながら「空は傷んだ果実のような色だった」と静かに描写した。

＊describe はセリフのタグにはあまり使われません。

＊この文で described を　said にするとより自然になります

report　　報告する、伝える、報道する　　正に reporting verb の原義となった動詞です

to give information about an event or situation

   　直接話法

   　"The lights went out at midnight," the guard reported in a flat tone.

  　 「真夜中に明かりが消えました」と、警備員は抑揚のない声で報告した。

  　間接話法

  　 The guard reported in a flat tone that the lights had gone out at midnight.

    警備員は、真夜中に明かりが消えたのだと、抑揚のない声で報告した。

　　The newspaper reported that two people were killed in the traffic accident.

　　 その新聞は交通事故で2人が死亡したと報道した。

＊これはマスコミなどが報じる、の用法です。

inform  公式に知らせる、きちんと伝える

to officially tell someone something

   直接話法

   The messenger bowed and informed the queen, “The enemy has crossed the river, Your Majesty.”

   使者は女王にひざまずき、こう知らせた。「女王陛下、敵軍が川を渡りました。」

   間接話法

   The messenger bowed and informed the queen that the enemy had crossed the river.

   使者は女王にひざまずき、敵軍が川を渡ったことを女王に知らせた。

＊inform someone that, inform someone + "..." の形が自然な英文として頻用されます。

　　The messenger bowed and informed the queen of the enemy's crossing of the river.

　　使者は女王にひざまずき、敵軍の川の渡河を女王に知らせた。

＊この文は文法的には正しいのですが、inform someone of 形を採用しているためやや硬い表現になります。

＊The messenger bowed and informed the queen about the enemy's crossing of the river.と、of ではなく about を使うとより自然になります。

   直接話法

   After a long silence, the doctor informed him, “Your mother is out of danger now.”

   長い沈黙のあと、医師は彼にこう告げた。「お母さまは、もう危険な状態ではありません。」

   間接話法

   After a long silence, the doctor informed him that his mother was out of danger.

   長い沈黙のあと、医師は、彼の母親がもはや危険な状態ではないと彼に知らせた。

  直接話法

   The official folded his hands and informed her, “Your application has been rejected.”

   役人は両手を組み合わせ、こう彼女に告げた。「あなたの申請は却下されました。」

   間接話法

   The official folded his hands and informed her that her application had been rejected.

   役人は両手を組み合わせ、彼女の申請が却下されたことを彼女に知らせた。

使い分けの目安

say　　　　　　内容そのものを言う

tell　　　　　　相手に伝える

add　　　　　　前の発言に足す

comment　　 意見として述べる

remark　　　　ちょっと述べる

mention　　　詳しくなく触れる

state　　　　　公式に明言する

explain　　　　わかるように述べる

describe　　　特徴や様子を述べる

report　　　　 事実を報告する

inform　　　　 相手に通知する
