Reporting Verbs 16

Reporting Verbs 11

Reporting Verbs

to say that something is not true, or that you did not do something

"I never lied to you," he denied, his jaw tightening.

With his jaw tightening, he denied that he had ever lied to her.

*With his jaw tightening, he denied ever having lied to her.

to say that you are annoyed, unhappy, or not satisfied about something

"You’re never here when I need you," she complained, staring at the cold  dinner.

She complained, as she stared at the cold dinner, that he was never there  when  she needed him.

=  As she stared at the cold dinner, she complained about his never being  there  when  she needed him.

"Nothing ever changes in this town," he complained, kicking at a loose  stone.

He complained, as he kicked at a loose stone, that nothing ever changed in  that  town.

to express disagreement or opposition to something that has been said, proposed,  or  done

He objected sharply that he did not want his life to be decided for him.

= He objected sharply to having his life decided for him.

"I don't want my life decided for me," he said sharply.

to say firmly and publicly, or with strong feeling, that you disagree with  something or that  something is unfair, wrong, or not true

"I did everything you asked," she protested, her hands trembling.

With her hands trembling, she protested that she had done everything  he  had  asked.

They raised their voices at once and protested, “This rule is not fair  to  anyone  here.”

to say or think that a person or thing is responsible for something bad that  has  happened

She blamed him for always ruining everything in a whisper.

She blamed him for shattering the fragile peace they had managed to build.

   blame someone for something

   blame something on someone

to say that someone has done something wrong, dishonest, or illegal

She accused him of stealing her future, her eyes bright with a bitterness  that  words alone could not bear.

She accused him of betraying not only her trust but the very ideals they had  once shared.

She made an accusation that he had betrayed not only her trust but the very  ideals they had once shared.
