Reporting Verbs 21 |

https://dictionary.cambridge.org/grammar/british-grammar/reported-speech-direct-speechhttps://www.eapfoundation.com/writing/references/reporting/https://www.ncl.ac.uk/academic-skills-kit/writing/academic-writing/reporting-verbs/https://latrobe.libguides.com/writing/reporting-verbshttps://www.efjapan.co.jp/eigo-resources/english-grammar/reporting-verbs/https://www.twinkl.jp/blog/reporting-verbshttps://www.frontiersin.org/journals/psychology/articles/10.3389/fpsyg.2026.1799996/fullPsychol., 02 April 2026 Volume 17 - 2026 | https://doi.org/10.3389/fpsyg.2026.1799996Reporting verbs across genre sets and research paradigms: a corpus-based analysis of denotation and evaluation in applied linguistics research articlesLiming Deng & Xinyue Lihttps://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/facpub/6373/Reporting verb variation across disciplines: An academic corpus studyGrant Eckstein, et al. ournal of Academic Language & Learning Vol. 16, No. 1, 2022, 59-75. ask 頼む 依頼するto tell someone that you want them to do something in a polite way.誰かに何かをしてほしいと丁寧な形で伝える間接話法The weary queen asked her guard to send him away before the candles died.疲れた女王は衛兵に、ろうそくが消える前に彼を立ち去らせるよう求めた。直接話法The weary queen said to the guard, "Make him leave before the candle goes out."疲れた女王は衛兵に言った、「ろうそくが消える前に彼を立ち去らせなさい」と。*質問する、尋ねるの場合は ask + whether/if, ask + wh/how, ask + "..." の形が取れますが、依頼するの意味の場合は、物を求めるなら ask for + 名詞、相手に行為を求めるなら ask + 人 + to do が基本とされます。beg 懇願する、哀願するto ask earnestly, humbly, or desperately for something, usually because the speaker strongly wants help, mercy, or permission.助けや慈悲や許可などを強く望んで、切実に、へりくだって、あるいは必死に求める直接話法"Just give me one more chance," he begged, kneeling on the wet pavement.濡れた舗道にひざまずきながら、彼は「もう一度だけチャンスをくれ」と懇願した。間接話法Kneeling on the wet pavement, he begged her to give him one more chance.濡れた舗道にひざまずいたまま、彼は彼女に、もう一度だけチャンスをくれるよう懇願した。×He begged, kneeling on the wet pavement, that she should give him one more chance.*begged … that… は現代英語ではほぼ使わず不自然な文になります。*I beg for you. どうかお願い、の決まり文句です。plead 必死に頼む 〜してくれと訴える beg より少し書き言葉的to make an emotional, serious, or urgent appeal for something, often in a way that stresses deep feeling or desperation.深い感情や切迫感をこめて、真剣に、または痛切に何かを訴え求める直接話法"Just give me one more chance," she pleaded, fingers knotted in the hem of his coat.彼女は彼のコートの裾を握りしめ「もう一度だけチャンスをちょうだい」と懇願した。間接話法She pleaded with him to give her one more chance, fingers knotted in the hem of his coat.彼女は、もう一度だけチャンスをくれるよう彼に必死で頼み、彼のコートの裾を握りしめた。× She pleaded, fingers knotted in the hem of his coat, that he should just give her one more chance.*現代英語では通常pleaded with him to give her one more chance の形にします。pleaded that he should… は古風で硬く、小説でもあまり使われません。request 要求する、依頼するto formally or politely ask for something, especially when the speaker shows respect, restraint, or procedural formality.特に話し手が敬意や控えめさ、あるいは手続き上の正式さを示しながら、何かを正式に、または丁寧に求める間接話法Twisting the ring on her finger, she requested that he keep it between them.彼女は指輪をいじりながら、彼にこれを二人だけの秘密にしておいてほしいと頼んだ。直接話法"Please, keep this between us," she said/asked, twisting the ring on her finger.彼女は指輪をいじりながら、「どうか、このことは二人だけの秘密にして」と頼んだ。*動詞 request を直接話法で使うと日常会話では不自然になります。代わりに said やasked を用います。*但し、小説やフォーマルな文体なら自然です。 |

require 必要だと提示する それが決まりだと求めるto state that something is necessary, essential, or obligatory, or to make something needed by the nature of a rule, condition, or situation.何かが必要不可欠である、または義務であると示す、あるいは規則や条件や状況の性質上、それを必要なものとする間接話法The abbess required that each novice keep silence until the first bell touched dawn.修道院長は、見習い修道女はそれぞれ、最初の鐘が夜明けに触れるまで沈黙を守るよう求めた。直接話法The abbess said, "Each novice must keep silence until the first bell touches dawn."修道院長は、見習い修道女はそれぞれ、最初の鐘が夜明けに触れるまで沈黙を守らねばならないと言った。*直接話法は不自然になります。*引用付きで人がそのまま発言する動詞というより、規則や条件を述べる動詞として使われるからです。demand 強く要求するto ask for something very firmly, forcefully, or authoritatively, often as if refusal is not acceptable.しばしば拒否が受け入れられないかのように、何かを非常に強く、威圧的に、または権威をもって要求する直接話法"Tell me the truth, now," he demanded, each syllable hammered into the silence.彼は沈黙に釘を打ち込むような調子で「本当のことを、今すぐ言え」と私に強く要求した。*動詞 demand は直接話法を自然に取る事が出来ます。間接話法He demanded, each syllable hammered into the silence, that I should tell him the truth then.*should を入れると英国式の、或いは文語風な表現になります。stipulate 規定する (必要な条件を)強く求める 取り決めるto say or write clearly and exactly what must be done, or how something must be done, especially as a condition in an agreement or rule.何をしなければならないか、またはどのように行わなければならないかを、特に契約や規則の条件として、明確かつ厳密に定める*少し儀礼的で硬い「条件の明示」や「厳格な取り決め」のニュアンスが出せます。間接話法She stipulated that he might read her letters, on the strict condition that he should never reveal a single line to her brother.彼女は、彼が自分の手紙を読んでもよいが、それはただの一行たりとも兄に漏らしてはならないという厳格な条件のもとであると、強く求めた。直接話法"You may read my letters," she said, "on the strict condition that you never reveal a single line to my brother."「私の手紙を読んでもよろしいです」と彼女は条件を付けて言った。「ただし、ただの一行たりとも兄には決して漏らさないという厳格な条件のもとで。」*動詞 stipulate は形式張った動詞であり、通常の会話内容などを直接目的語として取るのはちぐはぐな文になります。*単純に said を使うのが自然です。*動詞 stipulate は、must, should などのやや改まった法助動詞on the condition that / on the strict condition that などの条件句never, a single line などの強調表現と組み合わせると、格調高い響きになります。*まぁ、契約書のガチガチの記述形式です。prescribe 必要であると規定する 定めるto lay down authoritatively what must or should be done, often by setting a rule, standard, method, or course of action.何がなされなければならないか、またはなされるべきかを、規則、基準、方法、行動方針として権威ある形で定める間接話法The old manual prescribed that no blessing be spoken before the dust was washed away.その古い手引書は、塵が洗い落とされる前には祝福の言葉を口にしないよう定めていた。直接話法The old manual stated/instructed "Speak no blessing before washing the dust from your hands."その古い手引書は、手の塵を洗い落とす前に祝福の言葉を口にしてはならないと定めていた。*直接話法は不自然になります。別の動詞に適宜換えます。各動詞のニュアンスの違いask 普通に頼むbeg 必死に懇願するplead 痛切に訴えるrequest 丁寧に正式に求めるrequire 決まりだと求めるdemand 強く要求するstipulate 必要な条件を強く求めるprescribe 規則として定める |
