思考活動を表す　Reporting Verbs

＊単なる淡々とした事実の表現ではなく、動詞が伝える内容に、文の主語側の価値判断を含むものをここでは＜思考活動を表す Reporting Vebs＞と呼称して扱いますが、厳密な意味合いでこの様に分類できるものでは無く、塾長の恣意的な判断が排除できないことをお含みおき下さい。

Ｈ．明らかにする

＊実験結果や判例分析から、何が分かったかを示す時に使います。

＊以下の９個の動詞を扱います：

      illuminate   elucidate   clarify　verify   demonstrate

illuminate   明らかにする　解明する

To make something easier to understand by providing insight or explanation.

　洞察や説明によって、難しい事柄を分かりやすくする

＊光を当てる、が原義です。

生物

The present study illuminates the molecular mechanisms by which circadian clocks coordinate metabolic pathways.

　本研究は，概日時計がどのような分子機構を通じて代謝経路を統合しているのかを明らかにしている。

憲法

Examining early state constitutions illuminates the intellectual background against which the federal Constitution was drafted.

　初期州憲法を検討することにより、連邦憲法が起草された知的背景が明らかになる。

to check and confirm that something is true, accurate, or correct.

　説得力の高い証拠を示して、ある主張が真であると証明する

　われわれの遺伝学的相補実験は、観察された増殖欠損が ABC トランスポーターの喪失によって直接的に引き起こされていることを証明している。

憲法

These historical materials do not prove that the Framers intended a fixed, exhaustive list of federal powers, but they do strongly support a reading of the　Constitution that presumes limited and enumerated national authority.

　著者らは、ノックアウト対照と定量的シグナル低下試験によって、その抗体の特異性を確認した。

憲法

The court’s historical analysis validated the proposed reading of the First Amendment’s protective scope.

　裁判所の歴史的分析は、修正第1条の保護範囲に関する提案された解釈の妥当性を確認した。

substantiate　　裏づける、立証する、実証的に支える

to show that a claim, allegation, or interpretation is true or well-founded by providing supporting facts or evidence

　主張、申し立て、または解釈が真実であるか、あるいは根拠があることを示すために、それを裏付ける事実や証拠を提示する

＊validate よりも、既に存在する主張に証拠を与えて裏づける感じが強いです。

These findings substantiate the hypothesis that mitochondrial stress reshapes stem-cell differentiation pathways.

　これらの知見は、ミトコンドリアストレスが幹細胞の分化経路を作り替えるという仮説を裏づける。

憲法

Archival records substantiate the claim that early jurists feared unchecked executive discretion.

　古文書資料は、初期の法学者たちが抑制のない行政裁量を懸念していたという主張を裏づける。

establish  事実・真偽を確立、立証する  事実を明らかにする

to prove something or show that it is true, valid, or the case, especially by collecting facts, evidence, analysis, or other supporting information

　特に、事実、証拠、分析、その他の裏付けとなる情報を収集することに拠って、何かを証明したり、それが真実である、妥当である、あるいは事実であることを示したりする

＊根拠によってかなり確かな結論として示す

＊各動詞のニュアンスの違いと使い分け

validate　　　　　　妥当・有効だと認める、立証する　　　有効性を認める

demonstrate　　　証拠や実例で示して納得させる　　示して分からせる

prove　　　　　　　 疑いが残らないレベルで立証する　　決定的に証明する

substantiate　　　主張を支える十分な証拠を出す　　証拠で裏づける

establish　　　　　 命題や事実を広く認められる形で打ち立てる　　しっかり確立する

＊大まかな用法の分類：

　説明して分かりやすくする語（理解を助ける）：　illuminate, elucidate, clarify

　正しさを確かめる語（確認する）： verify, validate

　証拠で立てる語（主張を支える）： demonstrate, prove, substantiate, establish
