= to the contrary

・used to show that you think or feel the opposite of  what  has just been  stated:

　直前に話されたこと（話し手は相手の場合も自分の場合もあり得ます）に対して全く逆に考えたり感じることを表す　　

"I thought you said the film was exciting?" "On the  contrary,  I nearly  fell  asleep half way through it!"　

　「君はその映画に興奮したと言ったと思うけど？」　「いや全然逆で、その間半分は眠ってたよ。」

　"I hear he went bankrupt".  "On the contrary, he's   still  the owner of  many  buildings.".

　「彼が破産したと聞いけど。」　「いやそれどころかまだ沢山ビルを抱えているよ。」

The crime problem has not disappeared. On the  contrary,  it  seems to be  becoming worse again.

　犯罪の問題は解消していない。いやそれどころか、更に悪くなっているように見える。

これらは対照を表す為の一般的な表現ですが、用法の違いをここで纏めて見てみましょう。

on the one hand … on the other hand  　一方では・・・他方では

　２つの異なる物事或いは２つの別の考え方を対照的に示す時に利用します。しばしば物事の両面をバランス良く検討すべきことを示す意図で利用されます。最初の文章では on the one hand が省略される事もあります。

On the one hand, mobile phones are very useful and  can  save lives. On  the   other hand, people seem  to use them for the most pointless and    unnecessary  calls.

　スマホは一方ではとても便利で命を救う（命を守る）事にもなる。他方、人々は全く無意味で不要な通話の為にそれを利用する様に見える。

It’s a chaotic and disorganised country,  but on the  other  hand  it’s a  very  friendly and beautiful  place. (Both things are true about the  country.)

　それは混沌と無秩序の国だが、他方、とても友好的で美しい場所だ。

　（述べていることは共に真実であって対立的概念ではありません、別の側面から述べる形です）

on the contrary　　いやそれどころか

　前言に対して正反対であることを強調する為にこの表現を利用します。前言が事実ではないことを述べる為にしばしば利用されますが、否定的な言辞の後にしばしば用いられます。口語よりは書き言葉の方で利用されます。

  in fact, the fact is, actually

　 で代用も出来ます。

He didn’t seem offended by her criticisms; on the  contrary,  he seemed to   enjoy them.

(It was not true that he was offended by the remarks.  he  enjoyed them.)

　彼は彼女の批判に立腹した様には見えなかったし、それどころかそれを楽しんだ様に見えた。

　（彼が彼女の批評に立腹したのは事実ではなく、彼はそれを楽しんだ。）

= He didn’t seem offended by her criticisms. The  opposite  is  true; he  seemed 　to enjoy them.

= He didn’t seem offended by her criticisms; in fact  he  seemed to enjoy  them.

= He didn’t seem offended by her criticisms; actually  he  seemed to enjoy  them.

in comparison 　 by  comparison　これに比べると

 ２つの節や文章を対照させる場合に利用します。比べてみると、人々や物事が如何に異なっているかを示します。前者の方がよく利用されます。

London is England’s biggest city. Its second city,  Birmingham,  in  comparison,   is quite small by global standards.

　ロンドンは英国の最大都市だ。比較するに、第２の都市であるバーミンガムは、世界水準から見るとずっと小さい。

Driving the old model of this van was hard work. Driving  the  new model is   easy   in comparison.

　このワゴン車の旧モデルを運転するのは大変だった。これに比べると新型はラクだ。

   Cynthia was very nervous. Martha was quite calm by  comparison.

シンシアはとても神経質だった。これに比べるとマーサはとても穏やかだった。

= Martha was quite calm in comparison with Cynthia,  who  was very nervous.

in comparison with

In comparison with his older brother, who never stops  talking,  he’s quite  shy.

= He’s quite shy in comparison with his older brother,  who  never stops   talking,

　おしゃべりの止まらない彼の兄に比べると、彼は極めて内気だった。

in contrast   by contrast　これとは対照的に

in comparison や by comparison　に比べてより強く対照性を示します。by contrast も普通に利用されます。

Holistic medicine treats the whole person. Conventional  medicine,  in  contrast,  treats specific  symptoms and parts of the body.

　ホリスティック医学はヒト全体を治療します。伝統的な医学はこれに対し特定の症状と身体の一部を治療します。

to treat = to deal with (a disease, patient, etc.) in order  to  relieve or cure

　助けたり治す為に病気や患者を扱う ＝ 治療する

In contrast to most of the city’s museums, the art  museum  is  modern,  bright  and has a friendly  atmosphere.

　大方の町の博物館とは対照的に、この美術館は今風で明るく、親しみやすい雰囲気を持っています。

= Mpst of the city's museums are old-fashioned and  have  a  gloomy    atmosphere, in contrast,　the  art  museum is modern, bright and has a  friendly 　 atmosphere.

In the south much of the land is flat. By contrast, in  the  north there are   hills   and mountains  everywhere.

　南部では土地はほぼ平らだが、対照的に北部では山や丘陵だらけだ。

in contrast to    (in contrat with はあまり利用されない）

by contrast with （この用例はあまり一般的では無い）

The white roses looked lovely in contrast to the red  ones.

　赤いバラとは対照的に白バラは愛らしく見えた。

By contrast with the external appearance of the place,  the room into  which   the front door opened  was, if not particularly attractive, clean and  well ordered.

　その場所の外見とは対照的に、玄関に通じる部屋は、特に目を引くものでは無いにしても、清潔で良く整頓されていた。
