spite(n.)

c. 1300, shortened form of despit "malice" (see despite). Corresponding to 　Middle  Dutch spijt, Middle Low German spyt, Middle Swedish spit. In 17c. 　commonly  spelled spight. Phrase in spite of is recorded from c. 1400, 　literally "in defianceor  contempt of," hence "notwithstanding."

　spite は despit （悪意）の短縮形。in spite of の用例は１４００年頃から。その原義は in  defiance of 〜に反抗して、in contempt of  〜を軽蔑して、斯くしてnotwithstanding　の意。

　他人を侮辱し或いは恥じをかかせる為の侮蔑的な挑戦、反抗的な動作の意。ラテン語の  despectus= de + spicere = down + to look at  （見下す、軽蔑する）に由来。

The prepositional sense "notwithstanding" (early 15c.) is short for in  despite of "in  defiance or contempt of" (c. 1300), a loan-translation of  Anglo-French en  despit de "in contempt of." It almost became despight  during the 16c. spelling  reform.

　notwithstanding （にもかかわらず）の前置詞の意味は１５世紀初期から見られ、これは、in despite of の短縮形で、即ち、in defiance of , in comtempt of の意味で、仏語の en  despit de = in comtempt of （〜を軽蔑して）の外来語訳。

＊ notwithstanding が、 not + withstanding 詰まり、立ち向かわない、関与しない、相手にしない→考慮しない、左右されない→（存在）にも拘わらず、の意味の派生であり、逃げの手由来ですが、in spite of は、見下す、軽蔑する→考慮しない、左右されない→（どうでも良いと）相手にしない→（存在）にも拘わらず、の派生であり、上から目線で無視する、の由来で、＜関わり合いの無さ＞の出だしのニュアンスが異なっていますが、現在は特に区別もしていません。実際、in spite of  で〜を軽蔑して、の原義で考える者は現在では皆無でしょう。

In spite of unification, the country was still faced with the daunting  prospect   of  overcoming four decades of division.

　即ち、the daunting prospect =  overcoming our decades ofdivision　です。

・used when you do something that you do not intend to do and are trying  not  to  do:

　自分が意図してやったことではなく、またそうしない様に努力しているが思わず〜する

She started to laugh, in spite  of herself .

　彼女は（そうしたくは無かったが）思わず笑い始めてしまった。

≒ She couldn't help stating  to  laugh.

・If you do something despite yourself, you do it although you do not want to or  although you know you should not

　そうしたくはない、すべきでは無いとと判っているのにも拘わらず何かを行う

　本意では無いが、遣りたくないが

She took the money from her mother's purse, despite herself.

　彼女はマズいと思いながらも母親の財布から金を取った。

Old English stille "motionless, stable, fixed, stationary," from Proto- Germanic  *  stilli- (source also of Old Frisian, Middle Low German, Middle  Dutch stille,  Dutch  stil, Old High German stilli, German still), from PIE * stel -ni-, suffixed  form of  root  *stel- "to put, stand, put in order," with  derivatives referring to  a  standing  object or place. Meaning "quiet, calm,  gentle, silent" emerged in  later Old English.  Euphemistic for "dead" in  stillborn, etc. Still small voice is  from KJV:

　Used as a conjunction from 1722.

　still は、動きが無い、安定している、固定された、定常の、を表す古英語に語源を持つ言葉で、要は時間の横軸に対して変化が無い、の意味です。接続詞、即ち〜に拘わらず despiteの用法は 1722 年に遡りますが、譲歩節の＜揺さぶり＞に対して、それにも動かされず変わらないままだ、の意味が派生したのでしょう。

　動きが無い、じっとしている、から、

　・依然として〜のままだ、との時間を強めた意味の用法、

　・〜にも拘わらず不変だ、の譲歩の用法　の２つが出て来た訳です。

You may not approve of what he did, but he's still yourbrother.

　彼がしたことに同意しないかもしれないけど、それでも彼はあなたの兄弟に変わりないのよ。

I know you don't like her, but you still don't have to be sorude to her.

　あすは何もする必要が無い（＝暇だ）。

= I don't have anything to do  tomorrow.

Even though she doesn't really have the time, she stilloffered to help.

　時間が本当に無いにも拘わらず、彼女は助けましょうと申し出た。

＊この still を＜依然として〜し続ける＞と、時間の副詞として訳すと間違いです。

He offered to drive them to  their respective homes.

　彼らを銘々自宅まで来るまで送ろうかと彼は申し出た。

Admittedly, I could have tried harder but I still don't think allthis criticism  is   fair.
