場所としての用法

・in front of　　〜の真ん前に、直前に、前に

We might take some other trades, but we should soon  get  into difficulties  because we should  be  speaking without all the facts before us.

　我々は他の幾つかの商取引を遣ってもいいかも知れない。しかし、目の前の事実全てを考えることなく話すだろうからすぐに困難に直面するだろう。

＊should = would 　〜だろう

It took courage to stand before a courtroom full of  people.

　満員の法廷の前に立つには勇気が要った。

The letter K comes before L in the English alphabet.

　英語のアルファベットでは文字ＫはＬの前に来る。

× Many mothers put their children's needs before their  own.

　多くの母親は自身のよりは子供の欲しい物を優先する。

cf. to put before = to give the precedence to

　（OED 2nd version ではこの意味の　to put before の用法は死語扱いとなっています）

　〜に優先権を与える、〜を優先する

→◯ Many mothers  give  precedence  totheir children's  needs  over  their own.

= Many mothers think that their children's needs  take  precedence  over  their own.

＊但し、重要と考えて他のものより注意を払う、の意味では使用されます。

(IMPORTANCE)

to give more attention to one thing  than  another  because  you  think it is more important:

I'd never put my work before my  family.

　私は家族より仕事が大切だと思ったことはなかった。

(TELL)

to formally tell or explain facts or ideas  to  a  group  of  people in authority:

　権威筋の前で事実やアイデアを開陳する、述べる

We've got to put our proposal before  the  committee.

　我々は委員会の前で我々の提言を述べる必要がある。

We have the whole weekend before us - what  do  you  want  to do?

　僕らの前には丸ごとの週末がある。何かしたいかい？

He stood up before a whole roomful of people, and  asked  her to marry him.

　彼は部屋一杯の人の前に立ち上がり、彼女に結婚して呉れと頼んだ。

The bus stop is just before  the school.

　バス停は丁度学校の前にある。

The men appeared before  the judge yesterday.

　男達は昨日判事の前に出頭した。

If something is before someone or before a group of  people,  it will be   formally considered or examined by that person or group:

　ある物がある者或いはグルーブの前に存在すれば、形の上では当人若しくはそのグループがそれについて考え、或いは調べるだろう。

before Christ

BC 西暦紀元前。数字＋BC として利用します。紀元前２５年は、25 BC、紀元前２５年には、in 25 BC です。現在では非キリスト教徒の事を考え、BCE. before  Common Era 共通紀元前、を使う事が増えましたが、これは１８５６年以降の事です。

ジュリアスシーザーは西暦紀元前４４年の３月１５日に暗殺された。

⇔AD 　Anno Domini

　主の年に於いて、の意味。AD+ 数字の順番に記述します。紀元２５年は AD 25 、紀元２５年は in AD 25 です。しかし、 in 25 AD の語順でも利用されます。こちらも、非キリスト教徒も利用出来る様に、１８５６年以降に、CE  Common  Era 共通紀元 が利用され始めました。

Jesus Christ was crucified sometime in 30 A.D. after his  execution  was　ordered by the  Roman  Prefect of Judea, Pontius Pilate.

イエスキリストは、ローマ帝国 (第5代ユダヤ属州) 総督ポンティウス・ピーラートゥスにより彼の処刑が命じられたのち、西暦紀元３０年の或る日十字架に懸けられた。

＊数字０ゼロの概念は紀元６２８年にインドの学者 Brahmagupta ブラーマグプタに拠り提唱されましたので、それ以前に作られた西暦紀元には、紀元０年は存在しません。...3BC,　2BC,　1BC, 　AD1,　AD2,　AD3...　と配列します。

"in the year of the Christian era," 1570s, Latin, literally  "in  the year  of  (our) Lord," from ablative of annus "year" (see annual (adj.)) + Late  Latin Domini, genitive of Dominus "the Lord" (see domain).  Also  see  see A.D.

・Before last means before  the most recent:

　直前の前の

Today is Monday, so the day  before last was Saturday.

　今日は月曜日だから昨日の前の日（＝おととい）は土曜だ。

before the mast

　平水夫として

This particular man has 27 years' service before the  mast.

　この気難しい男は平水夫として２７年間勤めている。

before you can say Jack  Robinson

・used to say that something  happens very quickly:

　何かがすぐさま起きることを言う、あっと言う間に

Before you could say Jack Robinson, she'd jumped into  the  car and  driven  away.

あっと言う間に、彼女は車に飛び乗り走り去った。

＊before 過去型＋主文は過去完了形の組み合わせになります。

＜Jack Robinson と言う前に、既に〜していた、＞の用法ですね。

before you know it

= very soon:

We'll be on our way out  (of the house) again before  you  know it.

　我々はすぐにも再び家を出るところだ。

before your very eyes

・while you are watching 見る間に、瞬く内に、見る見る

Then, before my very eyes, she disappeared.

bygone

adjective [ before noun ]

・belonging to or happening in a past time:

過ぎ去った、過去に起きた

The empty factories are relics of a bygone era.

　空っぽの工場群は過ぎ去りし時代の遺物である。

There is a genuine feeling in the district that bygones  should be bygones.

　その地区には過去とは過ぎ去ったものであるとの風情がまさにある。

= In the district, we have a genuine feeling that bygones  should be  bygones.

Travelling by streetcar, tourists could peep into a bygone  world  offering  scenes far from ' 'everyday living ' ' and ' ' modern ways.

　市電で旅行すると、旅行者は「日常生活」や「現代風」から遠く離れた景観を差し出す過ぎ去った世界を覗き見ることが出来るだろう。

→市電で旅行すると、旅行者は過ぎ去った世界が差し出す−「日常生活」や「現代風」から遠く離れた−景観を覗き見ることが出来るだろう。

→市電で旅行すると、旅行者は過ぎ去った世界を覗き見ることが出来るだろう。それは「日常生活」や「現代風」から遠く離れた景観を見せてくれるのだ。

＊語順通りに訳すとラクです。

let bygones be bygones

・used to tell someone that they should forget about  unpleasant  things   that happened in the past, and especially to forgive and forget  something  bad that someone has done to them :

　過去に起きた嫌なこと、特に相手が行った悪いことを許し忘れるために言う、水に流してやる

Just let bygones be bygones and be friends again.

　過去は水に流してまた友達になろう。

　（過去に相手がこちらに嫌なことをしたがそれを許し忘れてやる）

＊悪いことを行った側が言うべきセリフではありません。被害者側が加害者側に言う言葉です。
