	２０２１年８月２５日皆様、KVC Tokyo 英語塾　塾長　藤野　健です。　時間を表す表現について扱います。時間に関する多様な表現がすぐに脳裏に思い浮かぶまでになると、英語の表現の幅が格段に豊かになると思います。時間の流れの中で生きている我々には、時間に関する様々な表現は寧ろ身に付けるべき必須の表現であるとも言える筈です。現在、過去、未来、期間、特定の時まで、特定の時、time を使った表現などに分け、解説して行きましょう。過去に纏わる表現の第２１回目です。英国ケンブリッジ英語辞典の用例を主に参考に解説を加えて行きます。 https://dictionary.cambridge.org/

Hello and welcome back everyone. Let's see today some more photos from the past,

breathtakingly being brought to life with stunning colorizations. We have always been

fascinated by old black and white photos, seemingly belonging to a completely different

world from the one that we know today. With new technology and artistic skills of few

individuals, we can now actually reimagine what this world looked like in full color. Some

may argue that black and white photography is a classic art, yes of course.. but still,

adding vivid colors to these photographs, makes them look much more realistic and

カラー化された過去からの息を飲むような写真。photos in the past でも同じ意味ですが、

photos from the past と from を使う事で、過去から伝わってきている、の意味を強めた訳です。

photos taken in the past ではなく、photos inherited from the past ですね。塾長も

モノクロ写真をＡＩでカラー化するソフトを購入したはずが行方不明になり・・・。

past

・ (used to reffer to ) the period before and until, but not including, the present time:

　現時点以前の或いは、それに至るも現時点を含めない時間、過去（の）

The average temperature worldwide has risen by about one degree Fahrenheit in the past 100 years.

　世界規模の平均気温は、過去１００年に於いて、華氏で約１度上昇して来ている。

・existing or happening in all parts of the world:

　世界各地に存在する、起きている、世界中で、世界中の

Their worldwide sales were growing by 20% a year.　（形容詞用法）

　彼らの世界中での販売は毎年２０％ずつ成長していた。

The rock group has sold six million copies of the album worldwide.　（副詞用法）

　そのロックグループはそのアルバムを世界中で６００万枚売り挙げて来ている。

= The rock group has sold six million copies of the album all over the world.

Martin broke his leg playing football and has been on crutches for the past six weeks.

　マーティンはサッカー中に彼は足を骨折し、過去半年は杖を衝いていた。

The dog has been her constant companion these past ten years.

　そのイヌはこれまでの１０年間常に彼女の伴侶となって来た。

Economically the country has been improving steadily these past ten years.

　私は過去３０年間毎日３マイルずつ歩いている。

He was the fifth climber to die on these mountains over the past two days.

　彼は過去２日間にこれらの山々で亡くなった５人目の登山者だ。

= He was the fifth climber who died on these mountains during the past two days.

I'm sorry I didn't phone you, but I've been very busy over the past couple of weeks.

　電話出来なくてごめん。でも過去数週に亘りとても忙しかったんだ。

The number of employees in the company has trebled over the past decade.

　この会社の従業員数は過去１０年に亘り３倍に増えて来ている。

= The number of employees in the company has increased three times over the past decade.

predeterminer　前限定辞

・ three times greater in amount, number, or size:

　量、数、大きさが３倍の

　彼は私の稼ぐ量のほぼ３倍稼ぐ。

= He earns almost three times the amount that I do.

= He earns almost threefold amount that I do.

cf. threefold は predeterminer　前限定辞ではなく、３倍の、３倍に、の意味の、単なる形容詞、副詞です。

The estimated sensitivity of the mandatory notification system increased threefold, from 10 % in 1995 to 33 % in 1998.

　必須通知システムの推定感度は、1995年の10％から1998年には33％へと３倍に増加しました。

自分が生まれ変わりだったと主張する子供の例も聞いたことがあるのですが、その子供は予言

通りに亡くなり、両親は更にその生まれ変わり先を探していると聞きました。reincarnation　詰ま

りは輪廻転生が起きると言う訳です。ヒンズー教ではこの考え方が宗教の根幹を成しています。

超有名人オプラ・ウィンフリーは２０１０年時点でこの番組の司会の年収が約２００億円でした。

　all, both, half, three times などの様に、限定辞である the, this, these, a, an の前に置くことの出来る言葉

＊全部、両方だ、～倍だ、半分だ、などの数量的表現ですね。

＊threefold には、３つの部分を持つ、との意味も有りますのでご注意を！

・in grammar, a word that is used before a noun to show which particular example of the noun you are referring to:

　文法に於いては、言及している名詞がどの特別のものを示すのか為に名詞の前に使用される言葉

In the phrases "my first boyfriend" and "that strange woman", the words "my" and "that" are determiners.

　"my first boyfriend"の my、"that strange woman"　のthat は限定辞です。

Our English teacher taught us about determiners, which identify which particular noun you're talking about.

　僕らの英語の先生は限定辞について教えて呉れた。それは君が何の名詞について話しているのかを特定する為のものだ。

When I say 'your diary' or 'this example', the determiners before each noun show which one I mean in particular.

　私が、'your diary' とか 'this example'　と言う時には、各名詞の前の限定辞は私が何を特定して話しているのかを示します。

I was in Seattle over the summer.

　夏の間は私はシアトルにいました。

They took/spent an hour over lunch (= their meal lasted an hour).

　彼らはランチに１時間費やした（ランチが１時間続いた）。

It's fascinating to watch how a baby changes and develops over time (= as time passes).

　時間が過ぎる共に赤ちゃんがどう変化し成長するのを見るのは魅力的だわ。
