　多分〜しそうだ、多分〜だ、おそらく〜だ

＊that 節以下はwill を用いた未来時制を取ることが会話的には多いですが、現在時制、現在完了時制も取れます。この意味で  be  likely  that  は厳密な意味での未来表現と言う訳ではありません。

It's likely that sales will rise.

　売り上げは多分上がりそうだ。

= It’s probable that sales will rise.

It is likely that the suspects  have  left  the  country  by  now.

　おそらく容疑者達は現在までに国を去っている。

In this case it is likely that  the  sensitivity  of  our  assay  permits  the  detection  of  homing  products.

　本件に於いては、おそらくは我々の試験の感受性により、帰着産物の検知が可能となっている。

= In this case, the sensitivity of  our  assay  probably  permits  (or  is  likely  to  permit)  us  to detect  homing  products.

＊quite は次に来る語の意味を強調するのに使われます。完全に、本当に、とても、大いに、など適宜訳語を当てて下さい。

＊便利に使える言葉です。

Quite a is used before some  nouns  to  emphasize  the  large  number,  amount,  or  size  of  the  subject referred  to:

　幾つかの名詞の前に置かれ、数量が多い、サイズが大きい事を強調します。

　　quite a few （可算名詞の前に）,　

　　quite a lot （加算、不可算名詞の前に）,

　　quite a bit (不可算名詞の前に),

= many, a lot

　　quite a while (時間表現)

= for a long time

　などが良く利用されます。

We’ve hadquite a lot ofrain this year.

　今年はとても降雨量が多い。

There werequite a few (= a lot)of people  waiting  in  line.

　列を作って待っている者達が沢山居た。

＊ a few = 幾らかの

　　quite a few →＜幾らかの＞の強調 → 多くの many,  a lot

＊quite a few　は入試に頻出します。ホンの少し、などと逆に意味を捉えないようにして下さい。

She hadquite a bit (= a lot)to say  to  him  when  he  finally  showed  up.

　彼が遂に姿を現した時に彼女は彼に言うべき事が沢山有った。

I hadn’t seen Rebecca in  quite  a  while (= for  a  long  time).

= quite probably, very probably,  almost  certain

　ほぼ確実に〜だろう

＊as likely as not → almost certain と即座に脳内変換して下さい。

＊as likely as it is no likely が省略しない原形です。言葉通りの意味は､〜が起こり得ないのと同じぐらいに〜が起こり得る、ですので、確率５０％であり得る、との意味ですが、慣用的に＜極めてあり得る、ほぼ確かだ  almost  certain ＞の意味になります。  native  speaker にもどうしてその様な意味に推移したのか説明が出来ず、只、慣用的にその意味で使うとしか言えません。

Of course, as likely as not, I'll  throw  it  away.

勿論、大方確実に、僕はそれを廃棄する積もりだよ。

Me, I think it's as likely as not that I'll  be  on  that  particular  plane.

　私はと言えば、その飛行機にほぼ確実に乗っていると思うよ。

= Me, I think it's most likely that I'll  be  on  that  particular  plane.

＊この表現も同様に、as  often  as  it  is  no  often ゆえ、頻繁で無いのと同じぐらいに頻繁でもある、の意味ですから、確率５０％で頻繁だ、が源義ですが、＜極めて頻繁に、ちょくちょく起きる、大抵起きる＞、の意味になります。

＊基準ラインから上がっているプラス分と下がっているマイナス分が等しい、との比較の間隔は日本語にはなく、混乱する方も多いでしょう。
