finalize

to make a final and certain  decision  about  a  plan,  date,  etc.:

　計画、日付、その他について最終的な明確な決定を行う

　最終決定する、完成させる、終了させる

＊DVD などを焼く最終段階でファイナライズ  finalize  の処理を行います。現在はこの用法にまだ限定されますが日本語に入り込んでいます。

We'll finalize the details later.

　後にその詳細を最終決定しよう。

Details of the deal are being finalized.

　その取引の詳細は最終決定されます。

finalize plans/arrangements

　計画、段取りを煮詰めて完成する

finalize a deal/an agreement

　処理、同意を最終決定する

　詳細は煮詰められているところだが、取引は来月承認されることが期待される。

finalization

(UK usually finalisation)

the action of making a final and certain  decision  about  a  plan,  date,  etc:

　計画、日付、その他について、最終の確かな決定を行う事

　終了処理、最終化、仕上げ処理、決着

the finalization of negotiations

　交渉の決着

Finalization of the agreement was  first  reported  online.

　同意が最終決着したことはオンラインで第一に報道された。

The rescue plan for the region was  reported  to  be  near  finalization.

　その地域の救済計画は決着に近いと報じられた。

to be described by people as being  or  doing  a  particular  thing  although there is no real proof:

halt

to (cause to) stop moving or doing  something  or  happening:

　何かを動かす、行う、或いは起こるのを止める、止めさせる

　停止する、停止させる、立ち止まる、立ち止まらせる、行く手を阻む、阻止する

halt (n.)

"a stop, a halting," 1590s, from  French  halte  (16c.)  or  Italian  alto, ultimately from German Halt, imperative from Old High German halten "to  hold" (see hold (v.)). A German military  command  borrowed i nto  the  Romanic languages 16c.

　元々は古高地ドイツ語の halten "to hold" の命令形 Halt に由来し、ドイツ語の軍隊用語が１６ 世紀にフランス語やイタリア語のロマンス諸語に取り入れられ、更に英語に移入されました。

＊高地ドイツ語はドイツの南半分で話されるドイツ語ですが、現在の標準ドイツ語となります。低地ドイツ語は北海に近い北部で話されるドイツ語ですが、オランダ語などとも近く、標準ドイツ語とは別言語に扱われる事もあります。

halt (v.)

"make a halt," 1650s, from halt (n.).  As  a  command  word,  attested from 1796. Related: Halted; halting.

　動詞 halt は軍隊の命令用語として1650 年代には取り入れられ、１７９６に使用された証拠があります。

＊英語の用法に於いても軍隊用語の語感を感じ取れると思います。

＊hold には　to  wait,  or  to  stop  something  temporarily:　一時的に何かを待つ、停止する、の意味もあります。

How  long  can  you  hold  your breath  (= stop  breathing)?

　どれぐらい長い間息を止められるかい？

Hold  it  (right)  there!

　そこを（きっかり）動くな！

＊Don't  move!

 Freeze! （凍り付け！）

 も、そこを動くな、の意味で一般的に利用されます。

＊halt  には、よたよた歩く、の意味もありますが、こちらは古英語の  haltian  healtian　に由来する別起源の言葉になります。

a screeching halt

a sudden stop by a vehicle that makes  a  long,  loud,  high  noise that is unpleasant to hear:

　キィーッと言う音を立てて乗り物が停止する

Eventually, the car came to a  screeching  halt.

　遂にその車はキィーッと言う音を立てて停まった。

The train is brought to a screeching halt  by  a  band  of  outlaws.

　その列車はごろつきの集団により急停車させられた。

a sudden and unexpected end to  something:
