lay sth to rest

idiom

to end a worry or fear:

　悩むのを止める、怖がるのを止める

I hope what he said has laid your fears  to  rest.

　彼の言った事が君の恐れを止めたことを私は望む。

→彼の言葉で君が恐れるのを止めたならいいね。

phrasal verb (PROVIDE)

to provide something for a group  of  people:

　人の集団に何かを提供する、与える

They lay on free entertainment at  the  club  every  day.

　彼らは毎日クラブで無料の娯楽を提供します。（習慣を表す現在形です）

They laid on a wonderful buffet after  the  wedding.

　彼ら来結婚式の後で素晴らしい宴席を提供しました。

phrasal verb (ARRANGE)

to arrange something on a flat surface:

　平らな表面の上に何かを配置する、レイアウトする

Most of Manhattan is laid out in/on a  grid  pattern.

　マンハッタンの殆どは格子状に配列されています。

We laid the pieces of the dress pattern out  on  the  floor.

　我々は型紙を床の上に配列した。

lay off someone

phrasal verb　(NOT EMPLOY)

to stop employing a worker, esp. for  reasons  that  have  nothing  to do with the worker’s performance:

　特に労働者の仕事ぷりとは無関係の理由で、労働者を解雇する

She was laid off along with many others  when  the  company  moved  to  California.

　その会社がカリフォルニアに移転する時に多の多くの者と共に彼女はレイオフされた。

＊一般的な解雇する、は to dismiss, to fire などを使います。

lay sth up

phrasal verb

to stop a machine, ship, or vehicle, for  example  when  it  needs  repairs or there is not enough work to do:

　機械、船舶、乗り物を、例えば修理の為やそれを動作させるに足る仕事が無い為に停止する。

Eighteen of our biggest cargo ships were  laid  up  until  business  improved.

　我々の最大級のコンテナ船１８隻が事業が改善するまで操業停止された。

lay the ghost of sth (to rest)

idiom

to finally stop being worried or upset about  something  that  has worried  or upset you for a long time:

　長い間悩んだり心が落ち着かなかった何かを遂に止める

With one stunning performance, he  has  laid  to  rest  the  ghost  of  all  his defeats last season.

　１つの素晴らしいパーフォーマンスで、前季の全ての負けに悩むのを彼は止めた。

=  One stunning performance helped  him  stop  worrying  about  all  his  defeats l ast season.

　素晴らしいパーフォーマンス１つで彼は前季の負け試合全てについて悩むのがやっと止められた。

leave it at that

idiom

to agree that there has been enough  discussion,  study,  etc.  and  that it is time to stop:

　十分に議論や勉強その他を遣ったので切り上げようと同意する、そのくらいで止めておく

Let's leave it at that for today and meet  again  tomorrow.

　今日のところはもう切り上げて明日再び会おう。

leave off!

phrasal verb old-fashioned informal

used to tell someone to stop being  annoying:

　誰かにいらいらさせることを止める様に言う（古くさい用法）

Hey, leave off! I hate people  touching  my  hair.

　おい、もう止めてくれないか。髪に触れられるのはイヤなんだよ。

let sb be

idiom

(also let sb alone)

to stop criticizing or annoying someone:

　誰かを批判したりイラつかせるのを止めさせる

Just let her alone ? she’s not bothering you.

　彼女を黙らせろだって？彼女は別に君に迷惑を掛けてはいないけど

＊一人にさせておく、は  leave  someone  alone,   leave  someone  be

 と let ではなく leave を用いることにご注意を！

あるがままにしておきなさい。（it は漠然とした状況を示す）

There will be an answer, let it be.

そのままにしていれば、答えはきっと見つかるさ。

＊この現在形の表現はそれが常に起きる習慣的な出来事であることを示します。

＊Speaking words of wisdom は、正確には、智恵の言葉を話しながら（やって来る）、ですが、意味的には　and speaks words of wisdom と捉えれば良いでしょう。
