provided (that)

＊providing (that) はより口語的で、provided  (that) の方はより  formal  であり、書き言葉ではより一般的です。

＊ 前回解説した as long as, on condition  that,  only  if  などと全く同様の使い方が出来ます。

= if,  only if:  〜である限り、

= only under specific conditions,  circumstances

　ある特定の条件、状況の下で

I know what to do, provided that  nobody  asks  me.

　誰も僕にそうしろと言わなくても僕は遣るべき事が判るよ。

= I know what to do even if nobody asks me.

＊条件節で意味が取れない時は、even  if  たとい〜であっても、の  even  が略されたものでないかを疑って下さい。これは一種の譲歩表現になります。

We'll be there at about 7.30, provided that  there's  a  suitable train.

　丁度良い列車があればそこには７時半に到着する。

They may do whatever they like provided that  it  is  within  the  law.

　法律の内にある限り彼らは好きなことを何でもしても良い。

ILO conventions allow school children to  work  during  their  holidays  and  free  time  provided that strict safety measures are taken.

　ＩＬＯの協定は、厳格に安全な手段が取られるとの条件で、学童が休日に労働することを許している。

＊ここの should は　probably おそらく、の意味です。

used to show when something is  likely  or  expected:

 何かがあり得そう、或いは期待出来ることを示す表現、おそらく、多分〜だ

This should be good (= this is likely  to  be  interesting  or  amusing).

welcome 形容詞 (PLEASED)

used to tell someone that they can  certainly  do  something:

= be pleased to do 〜するのが歓迎される、確かにそうして良い、〜することが出来る

Anyone who is interested is welcome  to  come  along.

　興味を持つ者はだれでも一緒に来る事が出来る。

= Anyone who is interested can  certainly  come  along.

to be good by acting in a way that  has  society's  approval:

　社会に是認される振る舞いをする

Did the children behave (themselves)?

　子供達はお行儀良くしてましたか？

I can't conceive how anyone could  behave  so  cruelly.

　誰かがそんな非道い振る舞いをしたなんて私には想像も出来ません。

Small children often behave  aggressively.

　小さな子供はしばしば攻撃的に振る舞います。

I'm ashamed to be seen with you when  you  behave  so  badly!

otherwise

used after an order or suggestion  to  show  what  the  result  will  be if you do not follow that order or suggestion:

命令や提案の後に用い、もしその命令や提案に従わなければどのような結果となるのかを示す、さもないと

I'd better write it down, otherwise I'll  forget  it.

　それを書き留めないとマズそうだ。さもないとそれを忘れるだろう。

We’d better send it express, otherwise  it’ll  take  days.  (If  we  do  not  send it express, it will take days.)

　それを急ぎの便で発送した方が良くないか？そうしないと何日も掛かるぜ。

I'd better tell him about the letter,  otherwise  he  might  be  angry.

　彼にその手紙について話した方が良いだろう。さもないと彼はひょっとして怒るかも知れない。

You'd better hurry, otherwise you'll  miss  the  train.

　君は急がないとマズいぜ。さもないと列車を逃すぜ。

＊had better は、〜しないとマズい、との命令に近い言葉です。

Call home, otherwise your parents will  start  to  worry.

　家に電話しなさい。さもないとご両親が心配し始めるだろう。

Come in now, otherwise you'll get  wet.

　さぁ入れよ。でないと濡れちまうぜ。

Take that chocolate away, otherwise I'll  eat  it  all.

　そのチョコレートを持ち帰ってよ。そうしなければ私が全部食べちゃうよ。

She must be  very smart, otherwise,  she  wouldn't  have  solved  the  puzzle.

　彼女はとても頭が良いに違いない。そうでなければそのパズルを解けなかっただろう。

≒ If she were not smart, she wouldn't  have  solved  the  puzzle.

　もし彼女が頭が良くなければ（現在の事実に反する仮定、仮定法過去）、そのパズルを解けなかっただろう。（過去に対する推量）

They had to leave early, otherwise the  children  would  have  been  up too late.

　彼らは早く立ち去らねばならなかった。そうでなければ、子供達は夜更かししていただろう。

≒　As they had left early, the  children  were  not  up  too  late.

　彼らは早く出発したので、子供達は夜更かししなかった。

＊They had to leave early　= They had to  leave  early  and  actually they did so

　彼らは早く立ち去る必要があったし実際にそうした

cf.be  up  too  late 夜更かししている

= stay  up  too l ate

　昨日は仕事でサンフランシスコに行かねばならなかった。（実際に出掛けた）

　何時に君はそこに到着せねばなりませんか？

We'll have to start keeping detailed  records.

　私たちは詳細な記録を保持し始める必要が出るでしょう。

Jackie's ill so they've had to change  their  plans.

　ジャッキーは病気なので彼らは計画を変更せねばならなかった。（実際に変更した）
