　接続詞用法

used to admit that something is true,  before  saying  something  else  about  it:

　他のことを述べる前に何かが（相手の主張が）真実であるとまず認める、仮に〜であるにしても、その通り、だが、〜と（言い分を）認めるにしても

= even if,  even though

= although I admit

＊仮定の意を含んだ一種の譲歩表現になります。

Granted that the story's true, there's not  a  lot  you can do about it.

　仮にその話が真実であるにしても、それについて君が出来る事はあまりない。

= Even if the story's true, there's not a  lot  you can  do  about  it.

Granted [Granting] that what you say is  true,  it's  no excuse.

　仮に君の言うことが本当だとしても, それは言い訳にはならない.

= Even if what you say is true, it's no  excuse.

Granting it to be true [Granted that it is true,  Granting that it is true],  you   are  still  in the wrong.

　たとえそれが本当にしても、やはり君の方が間違っている.

Granting that he was drunk,―Granted that  he was drunk,―that is no  excuse   for  his  behaviour.

　彼が酔っていたにしても、そう言ったところで彼の振る舞いの言い訳には全然ならない。

Granted, many horror films don't make  sense  until  the  ending,  but  they  at least provide a few scares along the way.

　その通りでホラー映画は結末まで（見ないと）意味を為さないが、しかしそれらは少なくともストーリーに沿って恐怖を幾らか与える。

= Although I admit that many horror  films  don't  make  sense  unless  we  see the  ending,  they  at least provide a few scares along the way.

　ホラー映画は結末まで見ない限り意味を為さないことは認めるが、ストーリーに進行に沿い幾つか怖い見せ場を少なくとも備えて居るものだ。

　（主節の現在形表現は普遍的真実を主張する表現です。〜と言うものだ）

That is one reason why they have been  so  amazingly  popular,  granted  that  they  are not particularly easy reading.

　特に易しい読み物ではないことを認めるにしても、それらの本（読み物）のもの凄い人気が続いている理由の１つがそれです。

Granted, cab drivers represent only  a  small  number  of  all  road  users,  but nevertheless their behaviour raises questions about road safety.

　その通りで、タクシー運転手は全ての道路利用者の内の小さな数を占めるに過ぎないが、しかしそれにも拘わらず彼らの振る舞いは道路の安全性についての疑問を提起する。

＊＜タクシー運転手の数は少ないが危ない運転をして迷惑を掛けている＞の婉曲表現ですね。

Modernizing historic buildings often  does  more  harm than good.

　この段階で首を突っ込むのは却って良くないだろう。

しばしばお目に掛かるものの意味の取りにくい形容詞  involved  の意味も覚えて下さい。

＊involved は他に、以下の意味を持ちます：

(COMPLICATED)

difficult to understand or deal with; complicated:　理解する、扱うのが困難な、複雑な

His story was so involved that I couldn’t  follow  it.

　彼の話はとても難解で私は着いていけなかった。

(INTERESTED)

interested in something you are doing:　遣っていることに没頭する。

Maria was so involved in her work that she didn’t  hear  me  come  in.

　マリアは仕事に大変没頭していたので私が入室したのが聞こえなかった。

(EMOTIONAL)

being in a close relationship with someone:　誰かと感情的に近い関係になる

emotionally/romantically involved

Try not to become too emotionally involved with  the  children  in your care.

　あなたの世話の内にある子供とは余り感情的に入れ込むことにならぬ様努めて下さい。

→世話をする子供に対しては感情的にあまり入れ込まぬ様にして下さい。

≒You should deal with the child in your care  objectibely.

to believe something to be the truth  without  even  thinking  about  it:

I didn't realize that Melanie hadn't  been  to  college  -  I  suppose  I  just  took  it  for granted.

　以下明確に区別は出来ませんが２つの意味があります：

�@ 〜を仮定すれば、〜であるとすれば、〜が許されるなら、〜なら

Given good health （Given that one  is in  good  health),   one can achieve  anything.

　人間健康でいられれば何でも成し遂げられる.

= If one is in good health, he can achieve  anything.

= When one is in good health, he can  achieve  anything.

�A If you say given that something is the  case,  you  mean  taking that fact into account.

〜を考慮に入れれば、考慮に入れると

=  taking into account,

= taking into consideration

〜のことを知れば、〜のことを考慮すると

= knowing about or considering a particular  thing

= If I  (or we) know,  If I  (or we) consider ,

Given his age, he's a remarkably fast  runner.

　年齢を鑑みると彼は目を見張るような速さで走る。

≒ He's a remarkably fast runner for his age.

Given (the fact) that he's had six months  to  do this,  he hasn't made much progress.

　これを行うのに半年要したことを考えると彼はあまり進歩して来なかった。

= Taking into consideration that he's  had  six  months  to do  this, he hasn't made much progress.

Usually, I am sensible with money, as I  have  to  be,  given  that I  don't earn that much.

　あまり稼げていないことが分かっているので、僕はそうであるべき様に大抵お金のことに敏感さ。

=  Knowing that I don't earn that  much,  I  am  usually  sensible  with  money as I have to be.

= Because I know I don't earn that  much,  I  am  usually  sensible  with money as I have to be.

＊日本語の一般的な感覚では、＜〜を考慮に入れて＋〜をする、している（動作の文）＞の組み合わせですが、given が　状態を表す動詞 knowing の意味も持つと知れば、＜〜が分かっている＋〜である（状態の文）＞が自然に成立することが理解出来ます。この場合  given  that  =  knowing that = because  I  　know   の意味合いと考えて良いように思います。

＊given that は if 的な意味合いを持ちますが、軽い意味の if 即ち＜〜なら〜だ＞の意味であり、0-conditional 或いは 1st-conditional に留まり、仮定法とは別のものです。
