皆様、KVC Tokyo 英語塾 塾長 藤野 健です。

 時間を表す表現について扱います。時間に関する多様な表現がすぐに脳裏に思い浮かぶまでになると、英語の表現の幅が格段に豊かになると思います。時間の流れの中で生きている我々には、時間に関する様々な表現は寧ろ身に付けるべき必須の表現であるとも言える筈です。現在、過去、未来、期間、特定の時まで、特定の時、timeを使った表現などに分け、解説して行きましょう。膨大な量が有りますので数ヶ月連続しての長丁場となります。未来に纏わる表現の第18回目です。引き続き未来を表す個々の関連表現についてざっと触れて行きます。これまでに断片的に触れて来た表現も数多く含まれますが、復習がてら再確認して下さい。日常会話や英作文の場で役に立ちそうです。

ことを。ここの in the long run は未来のある時点で、即ち、いつかは、の意味であり、この

言葉の持つもう1つの意味である、長期的に、と和訳することは出来ません。

@ at some time in the future:

未来のある時点で、いつかは (未来表現です)


You may want to quit school now, but in  the  long  run,  you’ll  regret  it.

 君は学校を辞めたいのかも知れないが、いつかはそれを後悔するだろう。


A at a time that is far away in the  future:

 未来のずっと先に、長期的には、長い目で見ると (厳密には未来表現では無い意味用法を含みます)


It seems a lot of effort but I'm sure it's  the  best  solution  in the long run.

 それは沢山の努力(=骨折り)に見えるが、長い目で見れば最善の解決策だと僕は確信している。


In the long run, stocks are considered a  partial  hedge  for  inflation risk.

 長期的には、株式はインフレの危険性に対する部分的な防止策であると考えられる。

However, it also encouraged corporate  investment  in  safety,  arguing that it would save money in the long run.

 しかしながら、それが長期的には節約になると論じるのであればそれは安全な企業投資を奨励もする。

= However, it also encouraged corporate  investment  in  safety  if  we argue that it would save money in the long run.


*arguing that ...は、主語が it ではありません。即ち独立分詞構文になります。

*この文章中の2つの it は何かの手立てと思われますが、この文章だけでは内容不明です。


In the long run, the number of sectors will  tend  to  increase  at the same rate as population growth.

 長期的には部門の数は人口成長と同じ割合で増加する傾向を示すだろう。

 傾向がある、〜しがちだ

〜する傾向を示すだろう


Such legislation will in the long run benefit  the  owners  of  firms, because  they will be better placed to retain an experienced and loyal  workforce.

 その様な法令は長い目で見れば農場所有者を利するだろう。と言うのは彼らは経験豊富で忠実な労働力を保持する為のより良い場に居ることになるからだ。

→その様な法令は長い目で見れば農場所有者を利するだろう。と言うのは彼らは経験豊富且つ忠実な労働力の得られるより良い場に居ることになるからだ。


*they will be better placed to retain → they  will  have  a  better  place  to retain と読み替えます。

to  keep  or  continue  to  have  something:

 何かを持ち続ける、保持する


She has lost her battle to retain control of  the  company.

 彼女はその会社の制御を保持する為の戦いに負けてしまった。

= 彼女はその会社の経営権を維持出来なかった。


In the long run, continuous growth will eventually  lead  to  a  high  level  of  development, which has a positive effect on democracy.

 長期的には連続的な成長はいつか最後には高い水準の発展に繋がるだろうが、それは民主主義に良い影響を与える。

*which の先行詞は a high level of development ですが、前文内容全体と考える事も出来ます。

(特に長い間の努力或いは問題の)最後に、遂には


* eventually  と  finally  はほぼ同一の意味ですが、 eventually  には、いつかは分からないが最後には、の意味用法が有ります。


Although she had been ill for a long time,  it  still  came  as  a  shock  when she eventually died.

 彼女は長い間病気だったが、彼女が遂に亡くなった時にはそれを知っていたにも関わらずショックだった。

≒ Although she had been ill for a long time,  it  still  came  as  a  shock when she finally died.


It might take him ages but he'll do  it  eventually.

 それは彼には時間を要したかも知れないがが、彼は(いつかは分からないが)最後には遣るだろう。

In the long run, debates and policy developments in  this  area  are  believed by a simple lack of knowledge.

 長期的には、この地域では論争並びに政治的発展が良いものと信じられていますが、これは単純に知識の欠如によるものです。

 人に良いことと信じられている、〜の理由で良いことと信じられている


Perhaps most fundamentally, it helps  develop  self-confidence  and  determination in local people and communities - the real drivers of  regeneration  in the long run.

 多分最も根本的には、地域の人々と共同体−長期的に見ての真の再生の担い手−に自信と決断力を発達させるのに役立ちます。

 特により活動的且つ成功を招く事で場所やシステムを改善する行動、再生、復興

The council is committed to a programme of urban regeneration.

 議会は都市再生計画を行うと約束した。

It's not a long term solution, but  it  will  save  money  in  the  short run.

 それは長期間の解決策ではないが、短期的には節約になるだろう。


Society is less impatient to consume in  the  short  run  than  in the long run, as long as the environmental quality is not high enough.

 環境の質が十分に高くない限り、社会は長期的以上に短期的に消費することをより望まない。


*英語特有の否定辞を連発する意味の取れない表現であり、日本人は煙に巻かれたように感じるでしょう。

 〜するのに我慢出来ない

= be eager to do

 〜するのを熱望する



*この文章で言いたいことは、最初の、<Society  is  less  impatient  to  consume in the short run. 社会は短期的に消費することは望まない。>の部分であり、その後に他の修飾語や条件が加味される表現です。この最初の表現をコアとして理解して下さい。


*短期的に消費する=物をすぐに捨てる



*否定辞を適宜打ち消して逆の文意に書き換えて大筋を理解する作戦も有効です。

 →

 環境の質が十分に高い限り、社会は長期的よりは短期的に消費することを待ち望む。

= 景気が良ければ社会は物を(大切に)長く使わずにすぐに捨てたがる。

= Society tends to consume more things  when  the  economy  is  doing well.

 (同じ内容が単純明快に記述出来ました)

副詞

at a time in the future or after the time  you  have  mentioned:

 後に、言及された時点から後の、その後に


*現在、未来、過去に拘わらず、〜後、のちに、の意味で利用可能です。


He'll be back two years later.

He'll be back two years ahead

He'll be back after two years from now.

He'll be back in two years (in two years' time).

 彼は今から2年後に戻るだろう。


He was back two years later.

He was back after two years from that.

 彼はその2年後に戻った。

彼は今から2年前に戻った。


Police questioned him and he was later  arrested.

 警察は彼に職務質問し、彼はその後逮捕された。


She said she would speak to me later.

 彼女はあとで僕に話があると言った。

= She said to me,  "I'll speak to you  later"

最近、近頃は〜だ、近頃に

≒ recently

*現在若しくは過去、現在完了時制で利用する言葉(状態、習慣、繰り返される事象について利用する言葉)であり、未来時制には利用しません。

*単発的な事象に関しては、lately は使わず、recently を用います。

 未来のある時に、或いは言及された時間の後に起きる


We could catch a later train.

 僕らは後の列車に乗ることが出来るのだが。(仮定法過去の現在表現です)

 僕らは後の列車に乗る能力を持って居た。(過去に於ける能力)


*実際に過去に〜することが出来た、と表現するには

We were able to catch a later train.

 僕らは後の列車に乗れた。


 或いは

We managed to catcha later train.

 僕らは後の列車に何とか乗れた。


と表現します。


You can always change your password at  a  later  date.

 あなたは後の日にいつでもパスポートを変える事が出来ます。


A (TOWARDS THE END)

happening towards the end of a period of  time  or  the  end  of  someone's life

 ある期間の最後に向かって、誰かの人生の最後に、最後で


He needed round-the-clock care in the later  stages  of  his  illness.

 病気の最終ステージで彼は24時間の介護が必要だった。


During his later years, he lived in  Cape Town.

 晩年は彼はケープタウンに住んでいた。


We could always go later in the season.

 ぼくらは決まってその季節の終わりに行く事が出来た(=行く能力を持って居た)。



B (RECENT)

more modern or recent:

 最近の


Later versions of the software are  much  better.

 そのソフトの最新のバージョンはずっといい。


Later models included a 2.5 litre  engine.

 最新のモデルには25リットルエンジンもあります。

 

I prefer her earlier paintings to her  later  work.

 僕は彼女の最近の作品よりは初期の絵画の方が好きだね。

Later on, we could go and have a meal  if  you  like.

 そのあとで、もし良ければ僕らは出掛けて食事することもできるけど。

*もし〜ならばすることも出来る、との婉曲表現です。


Why don’t you call back later on, when he’s  sure  to  be  here?

 あとで電話して呉れよ。その時には彼は確実にここにいるからさ。

not after:

 〜の前に、〜を超えずに

= before


She said she'd prefer us to arrive no  later  than  nine  o'clock.

 僕らが9時を超えずに到着すると嬉しいのですがと彼女は言った。

= She said she'd prefer us to arrive  before  nine  o'clock.

= She said to us, "I'd prefer you to arrive before nine o'clock."

人が〜する方を好む
