　嘗て〜したのと同じぐらいに → これまでで一番〜だ

I worked as hard as I had ever  donein my  life  for  my  final  exam.

= I worked as hard as I had ever  worked in my  life  for  my f inal  exam.

　期末テストのために、僕は人生で一番頑張った。

= I worked the hardest in my life for my final exam.

＊モノの数量が等しい場合には以下の表現を用います。

可算名詞に対しては

as.....  as, は、数値の前に用いて、それが驚くほどの程度であることを示す強調の意味で利用されることもあります。

as much as, as many as で驚くほど多くの、の意味に

同様に、as little as で、たったの〜、　as few as で、僅か〜の、になります。

As many as four and a half million people  watched  today's  parade.

　今日のパレードは、450万人もの人々が見守りました。

The organisers hope to raise as much as  £6m  for  charity.

　主催者は、チャリティーのために６００万ポンドもの寄付金を集めることを望んでいます。

= almost,  practically; virtually; in effect  ほぼ、ほとんど、実質的に

He as much as admitted that it was his fault.

　彼は自分の所為だと認めたも同然です。

= He almost admitted that it was his fault.

= already:

＊ as it is それが実際にそうである様に→既に

I'm not buying the children anything else today - I've spent far too much money as it is.

　今日はもう子供たちに何も買い与えない。既にあまりにもお金を使いすぎてしまったし。

＊as it is は多用される表現ですが、基本的に、今ある様に、の意味になります。

as much as

= although 〜にも関わらず、〜は山々だが

＊辞書には掲載されていない用法ですが、口語では as much as  を 接続詞 although の意味で利用します。

＊これも原義は、〜と同じぐらい〜だ、の意味ですが、ここから、〜にも関わらず、生憎と〜だ、の意味が派生したのでしょう。

＊この様に、元の意味に譲歩の意味が加わる事が英語表現にはそこそこ見られます。英語の１つの性質、特徴と呼称出来るのかも知れません。

As much as I want to stay, I have to go.

滞在したいのは山々ですが行かねばなりません。

As much as I'd love to help you, I can't.

　あなたを助けたいのは山々ですが、できません。

通常の意味用法としての as much as

＊as....as は、２つのものがある規準に於いて同じことを示します。例えば as tall as だと同じぐらいの背丈である、の意味になりますね。

＊では as much as の much は何を表す尺度なのでしょうか？

＊これは１つには、物量が等しいことを表しますが、他には、事象の烈しさ、程度、度合いが等しいことを意味します。

例えば、A is as much B as A is C.で、

ＡがＣであるのと同程度にＡがＢである、と訳せばＯＫです。

Food choice is as much about what's  available  to be  eaten as it is about what a species evolved to eat.

食物の選択とは或る動物が何を食べようかと進化したのと同程度に食べるには何が手に入るのかに関することである。

（about は口語では、コトの本質は〜だ、ぶっちゃけ〜だ、の用法がありますが、formal では利用しません。

 ここでは about = concerning, relating to 〜に関する、まつわる、として訳しています。）

＊ちなみに受験に頻出するnot  so  much  A  as  B  は、Ａよりも寧ろＢだ、と定番に訳しますが、

S is not so much A as S is B.

　SがＢである程度（ほど）にはＳはＡではない→ＳはＡよりは寧ろＢだ、ですね。

＊落ち着いて考えれば混乱を来さないのではと思います。

as .....as.. の構造を持つ慣用表現

＊as .....as.. の構造を持つ慣用表現があります。これらは固有の意味を持つ idiom と考えて良いものですが、そのまま意味を覚えてしまいましょう。

as likely as not

= probably　 おそらく、多分、可能性が高い

As likely as not, she'll end up in court over this problem.

　おそらく、彼女はこの問題を巡り最後は裁判になる可能性もある。

= It is likely that she'll end up in court over this problem.

In those days, a woman would as likely as not be  widowed  by  50.

　当時、女性は50歳までに未亡人になる可能性が高かったのです。

If children are not given boundaries, they will as  likely  as  not feel  insecure.

　子どもは、境界線を与えられないと、不安になるものです。

You will find a warm welcome at the hotel and, as  likely  as  not,  several  more  groups  of  walkers.

　ホテルでは温かく迎えてくれるだろうし、ウォーカーのグループも何組かいるはずだ。

If you are a billionaire, you as likely as not have  several  homes  scattered  around  the  globe.

　昔は何事にも負けないくらい頭が良かった。
