＊ここで前置詞の as について、この際ですので？ざっと解説して行きましょう。

＊前置詞の as には２つの意味しか有りません。

1. in the role of, in the function of, in the  capacity  of,  in the sense of,  being, under the name of

　〜の役割の下に、〜の機能において、〜の能力において、〜の意味において、存在する、〜の性格において

＊要は全て日本語の、として、で表現出来ます。

＊前置詞ですので後ろに名詞を取ります。

I had natural ability as a footballer.

　僕はサッカー選手としての天賦の才があった。

= I had natural ability n the capacity of a  footballer.

He poses as a friend.

　彼は友人を装う

He has worked as a diplomat in the U.S., Sudan  and  Saudi Arabia.

　彼は米国、スーダン、サウジアラビアで外交官として活躍した。

= He has worked in the role of a diplomat  n  the  U.S., Sudan and Saudi Arabia.

The news apparently came as a complete  surprise.

　このニュースは、どうやらまったくの驚きだったようだ。

= actually, in fact, in reality, in truth （註：　actually  と in fact には。実際にその通りだが、の＜順接＞の意味も有りますのでご注意下さい）

It's not that difficult. As a matter of fact, it's quite  easy.

'I guess you haven't eaten yet.'?　'As a  matter  of  fact,  I have,' said Hunter.

＊相手の、お前まだ〜してないな？　の問い、非難に対して、いや、したよ、と反論するのに  as  a  matter  of  fact が頻用されます。

= considered altogether; completely  全体として、ひっくるめて考えると、１つとして考えると、まとめて考えると

If you refer to something as a whole, you  are  referring  to it generally and as a single unit.

　何かを全体として言及する場合、一般的に、そして一つのユニットとして言及することになります。

　He described the move as a victory for  the  people  of South Africa as a whole.

　彼はこの動きを、南アフリカ国民全体にとっての勝利と表現した。

As a whole we do not eat enough fibre in  Britain.

　イギリスでは、全体として繊維を十分に食べていない。

代名詞としての  as

＊これ以前の説明にて既にところどころ紹介してありますが一応ここでまとめておきますね。

1 関係詞としての用法、通常は先行詞に　such や same　を伴う。

= that; who; which

I have the same trouble as you had.

　私もあなたと同じような（種類の）悩みを抱えています。

2. a fact that

She did her job well, as can be proved by the records.

　彼女は自分の仕事をきちんとこなしていたことは、記録で証明できる。

= She did her job well, which can be proved  by  the  records.

まぁ、関係代名詞に意味用法が相当に接近している as  の用法になりますね。
