1. in the role of,  in the function of,  in  the  capacity  of,  in  the  sense of,   being,  under the name of

I had natural ability as a footballer.

 僕はサッカー選手としての天賦の才があった。

= I had natural ability in the capacity of a  footballer.

He has worked as a diplomat in the U.S., Sudan  and  Saudi  Arabia.

 彼は、この考えは間違っていると述べたと報じられている。(やや硬い表現)

  He is reported:彼は報道されている

  as saying ...:そのように言ったとして

  that this idea was wrong:この考えは間違っていたと

*as は saying という動作の様態、つまり「どのような方法で話したか」を表しているのではありません。即ち様態を表す意味の as ではありません。

 以下の方が自然な表現になります。

He is reported to have said/ to say that this  idea  was  wrong.

It is reported that he said this  idea  was  wrong.

2.  like

that 節の that の代わりとなる as  の用法

(以下2025年12月17日追記)

*現在では上に触れた様に、 as が前置詞として機能するのは、〜として、の意味と、様態の前置詞 like の置き換えの場合の2通りとなります。

*後ろに基本的に名詞、名詞相当句は取りますが、名詞節を従える用法は見ませんね。

しかしながら、

Oxford English Dictionary 2nd. edition に次の様な記述がありました:(以下一部抜粋)

Introducing a noun sentence, after say, know, think, etc. Sometimes expanded  into as that. Obs. and replaced by that; but still common in southern dialect speech, where often expanded to as how.

say, know, think などの後に置かれ名詞節を導入する。時に as that と展開される。廃れつつあり that に置き換えられるが、南部方言では依然として一般的で、しばしば as how と展開される。

1712 Steele Spect. No. 508 _6 That the Fop..should say, as he would rather  have such-a-one without a Groat, than me with the Indies.

1748 Richardson Clarissa (1811) IV. 259 Pray let her know as  that I will  present her..my Lancashire Seat.

1771 Smollett Humph. Cl. I. 274, I believe as how your man  deals with the  devil.

1833 Marryat P. Simple xiii. (Hoppe) Seeing as how the captain  had been  hauling him over the coals.

1856 Mrs. Stowe Dred xi. 100, I don't know as you like the  appearance  of  our place.

I have the same trouble as you had.

この用法に関しては

塾長のコラム 2023年6月25日 様態を表す表現5 真実を追加する  as、の第5番にて詳述していますのでご参照下さい。

まぁ、関係代名詞に意味用法が相当に接近している as  の用法になりますね。

3. 関係代名詞としての方言 New England,  Midland  U.S. &  Southern U.S.

who; whom; which; that

Them as has gets

= Them whom has gets
