人物を positive に描写する形容詞  Positive  Personality Adjectives１

　さて、前回シリーズまで、人格描写に利用される簡易な形容詞について解説して来ましたが、基本的な語ゆえ、多義性を持つ語が大半であり、ついでの勉強として、人格描写以外の意味についてもやや詳しく扱いました。今回からは、前回まででアブレた平易語、及び幾分かクラスを上げた人格形容詞を採りあげて行きますが、多義性を持つ語は自ずと少なくなり、それを反映させて、意味合いと例文も簡略に扱って行きます。まぁ、単語帳の様にリストアップした語についてアッサリと記述して行きます。引き続き丸暗記して下さい。

　positive, neutral, negative な形容詞に分けて順次解説して行きますが、これは飽くまで便宜的な分け方であり、文脈に拠っては別の区分に該当する場合もあり得ます。

adaptable  適応力のある

able to change one's ideas or  behaviour  in  order  to deal with new situations

　新しい状況に対処するために自分の考えや行動を変えられる

=  flexible, variable, versatile,  resilient  柔軟性がある、変化に富む、多才である、回復力がある

They are adaptable foragers that  learn  to  survive  on a wide range of food sources.

　彼らは適応力のある採集者であり、多様な食物源で生き延びる術を学ぶ。

affable  気さくな

pleasant and friendly

　気さくで親しみやすい

= friendly, kindly, civil, warm 友好的、親切、礼儀正しい、温かい

Mr Brooke is an extremely affable  and  approachable  man.

　ブルック氏は非常に気さくで親しみやすい人物である。

affectionate  愛情深い

showing your love or fondness for another  person  in the way that you behave towards them

　行動で他者への愛情や好意を示す

=  fond, loving, kind, caring  親愛の情のある、愛情深い、親切な、思いやりのある

They seemed devoted to each other and  were  openly  affectionate.

　二人は互いに献身的で、公然と愛情を表現していた。

Ehtel is very affectionate and is often  giving  me  hugs.

　エテルはとても愛情深く、よく私にハグをしてくれる。

agreeable　　好意的な

・being pleasant and try to please people

　気さくで人に好かれようとする性質

=  friendly, pleasant, nice, sociable 　友好的、気さく、親切、社交的

I've gone out of my way to be  agreeable  to  his  friends.

　私は彼の友人たちに好意的に接しようと努めてきた。

・pleasant, pleasing, satisfying,  acceptable

　心地よい、満足のいく、受け入れられる

Some months later I was agreeably  surprised  to  be telephoned at work by Ronnie.

agile　敏捷な

・think quickly and intelligently

　素早く賢く考える

=  acute, sharp, quick, bright　鋭い、鋭敏な、機敏な、聡明な

She was quick-witted and had an  extraordinarily  agile  mind.

　彼女は頭の回転が速く、並外れて敏捷な知性を持っていた。

　素早く軽やかに動く

=  nimble, active, quick, lively 　軽快な、活発な、素早い、生き生きとした

At 20 years old he was not as agile as he  is  now.

　20歳の彼は今ほど敏捷ではなかった。

amiable  愛想のよい，気だての優しい

riendly and pleasant to be with （書き言葉）

　親しみやすく、一緒にいて心地よい

=  pleasant, kind, kindly, pleasing　　心地よい、親切、親切心のある、好ましい

She had been surprised at how amiable  and  polite  he had seemed.

　彼女は彼がどれほど親しみやすく礼儀正しく見えたかに驚いていた。

amicable　友好的な

pleasant to each other and solve  their  problems  without  quarrelling

assertive 　断固とした

confident and direct in claiming one's  rights  or  putting  forward one's views

　自分の権利を主張したり意見を述べたりする際に自信を持ち、率直である

=  confident, firm, demanding, decided　　自信に満ちた、確固たる、要求の厳しい、決断力のある

Debating encourages children to be  more  assertive.

　討論は子どもたちがより断固とした態度を持つよう勇気づけます。

circumspect　　慎重な

cautious in what you do and say and do  not  take  risks [formal]

　言動に慎重で、リスクを冒さない

= cautious, politic, guarded, careful 　慎重な、思慮深い、用心深い、注意深い

The banks should have been more  circumspect  in  their dealings.

　その銀行は取引においてより慎重であるべきだった。

Are you saying, in your usual  circumspect  manner,  that it isn't be a good idea?

　いつもの慎重な態度で、それは良い考えではないと言っているのですか？

cf. Latin circumspecere =  circum "around,  round  about" + specere "to look" 回りを見る

civil　　礼儀正しい

polite in a formal way, but not  particularly  friendly.　　[formal]

　公的な礼儀正しさはあるが、特に親しみやすいわけではない

As visitors, the least we can do is be civil  to  the  people in their own land.

　訪問者として、少なくとも現地の人々に対して礼儀正しく振る舞うことが最低限の礼儀である。

communicative　　コミュニケーション能力がある

・talkative, open, frank, forthcoming

　おしゃべりな、率直な、打ち解けた、話しやすい

She has become a lot more tolerant and  communicative.

　彼女は以前よりずっと寛容で話しやすくなった。

convivial  [formal]歓談好きの

pleasant, friendly, and relaxed　愉快な、友好的な、くつろいだ

= sociable, friendly, lively, cheerful 社交的で、友好的で、活気にあふれ、明るい

The atmosphere was quite convivial.

daring 　大胆な

・willing to do or say things which are  new  or  which  might shock or anger other people.

The historical research was  impressively  diligent.

We are currently looking for diligent  and  motivated  individuals to join our team.

efficient　　効率的な

able to do tasks successfully, without  wasting  time or energy

　時間やエネルギーを無駄にせず、仕事を成功裏に遂行できる

How can we be more efficient with the  existing  resources that we have?

　既存の資源を用いて、どうすれば我々はもっと効率的になれるだろうか？

With today's more efficient contraception  women  can  plan their families and careers.

empathetic　　共感的な　[formal]

having the ability to share another person's  feelings  or  emotions as if they were their own

= understanding, sensitive, sympathetic,  compassionate 　理解深い、思いやりのある、同情的な、思いやりのある

Her current doctor is empathetic and will  double  appointment  times.

enchanting　魅惑的な

very attractive or charming

even-tempered　　穏やかな性格の

calm and not getting angry or annoyed  easily

He's an even-tempered sale assistant who  doesn't  let  demanding customers upset him.

exceptional　　卓越した

・having a particular quality, usually a good  quality,  to  an unusually high degree

　特定の性質、通常は優れた性質を、並外れて高い程度に備えている

His translation is exceptional in its poetic  quality.

extremely good and that there are  no  faults  or  problems  with them

She attributed her flawless complexion  to  the  moisturiser  she used.

gregarious　社交的な

・friendly and enjoying being with other  people

・友好的で人と一緒にいることを楽しむ

= outgoing, friendly, sociable, cordial 　社交的、友好的、人懐っこい

She is such a gregarious and outgoing  person.

　もしあなたが社交的で歴史好きなら、きっと良いツアーガイドになれるでしょう。

If you're gregorious and like history, you'd  probably  make  a  good tour guide.

・ normally living in large groups　（生物学）群居性の

Snow geese are very gre

　雪雁は非常に群居性の強い鳥です。

cf. 英語の gregarious は、Latin 語の  gregarius  "pertaining  to  a flock; of the 動物の群れ、に由来する語ですが、しばしばラテン語の１字違いの　gregorius,  "wakeful" 覚醒している、と混同されます。ローマ法王のグレゴリウス１世の名はこちらに基づきますね。
