人物を neutral に描写する形容詞  Neutral Personality Adjectives１

　さて、前回シリーズまで、人格描写に利用される簡易な形容詞について解説して来ましたが、基本的な語ゆえ、多義性を持つ語が大半であり、ついでの勉強として、人格描写以外の意味についてもやや詳しく扱いました。今回シリーズからは、前回まででアブレた平易語、及び幾分かクラスを上げた人格形容詞を採りあげて行きますが、多義性を持つ語は自ずと少なくなり、それを反映させて、意味合いと例文も簡略に扱って行きます。まぁ、単語帳の様にリストアップした語についてアッサリと記述して行きます。引き続き丸暗記して下さい。

　positive, neutral, negative な形容詞に分けて解説して行きますが、これは飽くまで便宜的な分け方であり、文脈に拠っては別の区分に該当する場合もあり得ます。

breezy　さわやかで気さくな

behaving in a casual, cheerful, and  confident  manner

　気楽で陽気で自信に満ちた

= carefree, casual, lively, sparkling  気楽な、気軽な、活気のある、きらめく

...his bright and breezy personality

　…彼の明るくさわやかな性格

Mona tried to sound breezy.

carefree　気楽な

having or involving any problems, worries,  or  responsibilities

　問題や心配事、責任を一切抱えていない

= untroubled, happy, cheerful, careless　悩みがない、幸せな、陽気な、無頓着な

They certainly gave the impression of a  carefree  couple who delighted in each other's company.

　彼らは確かに、お互いの存在を心から楽しんでいる気楽なカップルという印象を与えた。

Chantal remembered carefree past summers  at  the beach.

　シャンタルは、ビーチで過ごした気楽な過去の夏を思い出した。

Some of my colleagues are so carefree and  they  never  seem concerned about anything.

casual　形式張らない　気軽な

・relaxed and not very concerned about what  is  happening  or what you are doing

It's difficult for me to be casual about  anything. [+about]

chatty　おしゃべりな　informal

talking a lot, normally in a friendly way

conservative　保守的な

unwilling to accept changes and new ideas

　変化や新しい考えを受け入れるのを嫌がる

Older people tend to be more conservative and a  bit  suspicious of anything new.

　年配者は保守的になりがちで、新しいものには少し疑い深い。

He's a very conservative dresser - he always  looks  like  he's wearing his father's clothes!

enigmatic　　なぞめいた  不思議な

mysterious and difficult to understand

= mysterious, puzzling, obscure, bafflin 神秘的な、不可解な、曖昧な、困惑させる

But he was enigmatic and avoided the spotlight.

　しかし彼は謎めいており、脚光を避けていた。

She starred in one of Welles's most enigmatic  films.

And finally, what may the study of these unusual  works  reveal  of their equally enigmatic author?

extravagant　　浪費家の

・spending more money than they can  afford  or  uses more of something than is reasonable

We are not extravagant; restaurant meals  are  a  luxury and designer clothes are out.

Parents who have extravagant hopes for  their  children  are bound to be disappointed.

extrovert　外向的な（米国では通常 extroverted を使う）

energetic and enjoying interacting with other  people

Famously private, the artist often depicted  flamboyant  and  extrovert characters, despite her own retiring temperament.

　有名なほど内向的だったこの芸術家は、自身の控えめな性格にもかかわらず、派手で外向的な人物を頻繁に描いた。

= thrifty, sparing, careful, prudent　　倹約な、節約する、慎重な、賢明な

Lungren, a fiscal conservative when it  comes  to  spending taxpayers’ money, is frugal in his personal life as well.

　納税者の金を使うことに関しては財政保守派であるラングレンは、私生活においても質素である。

impressionable　　影響を受けやすい

not very critical and is therefore easy to  influence  by  other people, especially because you are young

　批判心が乏しく、特に若さゆえに他人の影響を受けやすい

= suggestible, vulnerable, susceptible　暗示にかかりやすい、脆弱な、感受性の強い

He's at that impressionable age when he's very  easily  led  by other children.

introvert 　内向的な　= introverted

enjoying solitary activities and calm  environments,  and  prefer to interact with individuals or in small groups

　孤独な活動や静かな環境を好み、個人や少人数のグループとの交流を好む

=  introspective, withdrawn, inward-looking,  self-contained　内省的、引きこもり気味、内向的、自己完結型の

Machen was a quiet, introverted child.

　マッヘンは静かで内向的な子供だった。

When she started school, she became  cautious,quiet  and introverted.

　学校に通い始めると、彼女は慎重で静かになり、内向的になった。

kooky　ちょっと風変わりな感じの　informal

slightly strange or eccentric, but often in a  way  which  makes you like them

　少し奇妙だったり変わり者だったりするが、それがかえって好感を持たせる

She's been mocked for her kooky ways.

　彼女の風変わりな振る舞いを嘲笑する人もいる。

Some people avoid him because he's a bit  kooky,  but  I  think he's fun to be around.

　彼が少し変わり者だからと避ける人もいるけど、僕は一緒にいると楽しいと思う。
