人物を neutral に描写する形容詞  Neutral Personality Adjectives２

　さて、前回シリーズまで、人格描写に利用される簡易な形容詞について解説して来ましたが、基本的な語ゆえ、多義性を持つ語が大半であり、ついでの勉強として、人格描写以外の意味についてもやや詳しく扱いました。今回からは、前回まででアブレた平易語、及び幾分かクラスを上げた人格形容詞を採りあげて行きますが、多義性を持つ語は自ずと少なくなり、それを反映させて、意味合いと例文も簡略に扱って行きます。まぁ、単語帳の様にリストアップした語についてアッサリと記述して行きます。引き続き丸暗記して下さい。

　positive, neutral, negative な形容詞に分けて解説して行きますが、これは飽くまで便宜的な分け方であり、文脈に拠っては別の区分に該当する場合もあり得ます。

laid-back 気楽な　カジュアルな　informal

behaving in a calm relaxed way as  if  nothing  will  ever  worry them

　何事も気にしないかのように、落ち着いてリラックスした態度で振る舞う

= relaxed, calm, casual　　くつろいだ、落ち着いた、カジュアルな

Everyone here has a really laid-back  attitude.

　ここの人たちは皆、本当に気楽な態度だ。

She nver seemes to get stressed  about  anything,  but  sometimes she's perhaps a bit too laid-back.

　彼女は何に対してもストレスを感じていないようだが、時々少し気楽すぎるかもしれない。

mercurial　　気まぐれな　　

frequently change their mind or  mood  without  warning

　予告なしに頻繁に考えや気分を変える

= capricious, volatile, unpredictable,  erratic

mischievous　　いたずら好きな

liking to have fun by playing harmless tricks on  people  or  doing  things they are not supposed to do

　人に対して無害な悪戯をしたり、してはいけないことをして楽しむのが好きな

= naughty, bad, troublesome　いたずらっ子の、悪い、手のかかる

She rocks back and forth on her chair like a  mischievous  child.

　彼女はいたずらっ子のように椅子で前後に揺れている。

He's a little mischievous.

　彼は少しいたずらっ子だ。

・ntended to cause trouble

　トラブルを引き起こす意図がある

= malicious, damaging, vicious, destructive　悪意のある、有害な、悪質な、破壊的な

The Foreign Office dismissed the story as  mischievous  and  false.

　外務省はその報道を悪意のある虚偽だと一蹴した。

mysterious　　謎めいた　不可解な

strange, not known, or not understood

　奇妙な、知られていない、あるいは理解されていない

She's an actress whose inner life has remained  mysterious,  despite the many interviews she has given.

　彼女は数多くのインタビューを受けてきたにもかかわらず、内面が謎に包まれた女優である。

He died in mysterious circumstances, and there  is  still  a  possibility that it was murder.

彼は不可解な状況で亡くなり、今もなお殺害の可能性が残されている。

He began to feel sympathy for this slightly  mysterious  man.

　彼はこの少し謎めいた男に同情を覚え始めた。

noncommittal　　態度をはっきりさせない

deliberately  not expressing one's opinion or  intentions  clearly

　意図的に意見や意図を明確に表明しない

= evasive, politic, reserved, guarded　　曖昧な、政治的、控えめな、慎重な

Mr Hall is non-committal about the number of  jobs  that  the  development corporation has created.

　ホール氏は開発公社が創出した雇用数について曖昧な態度を示している。

Sylvia's face was noncommittal.

　シルビアの表情ははっきりしなかった。

outspoken　率直な

(of a person) expressing strong opinions very  directly  without  worrying if other people will be upset by them

=  forthright, open, free, direct　　率直な、オープンな、自由な、直接的な

Some church leaders have been outspoken in  their  support  for  political reform. [+ in]

　一部の教会指導者は政治改革への支持を率直に表明してきた。

He was an outspoken critic of apartheid.

　彼はアパルトヘイトに対するオープンな批判者であった。

rebellious　　反抗的な

not like obeying rules or authority

　規則や権威に従うことを好まない

He grew older and more rebellious.

　彼は大きく成るにつれ、ますます反抗的になった。

He was such a rebellious teenager, but  now  he  works on Wall street.

　彼はとても反抗的なティーンエイジャーだったが、今ではウォール街で働いている。

The prime minister will face even greater  resistance  from  rebellious backbenchers.

　首相は、反抗的な後列議員たちからのさらに強い抵抗に直面するだろう。

sarcastic　　皮肉な、当て擦りの、嫌味な

saying or doing the opposite of what they  really  mean  in  order to mock or insult someone

　嘲笑や侮辱のために、自分の本心とは逆のことを相手に言ったり行動したりする

＊一種の誉め殺しみたいなところを含む表現です。

＊辛辣なユーモアを交えた当て擦りですね。

＊英米系はこの手のヒネたもの言いが好きみたいですね。

= ironical, cynical, satirical, cutting　皮肉な、冷笑的な、風刺的な、辛辣な

Sarcasm: the ability to insult idiots whithout  them  realizing it.

　皮肉：バカをそれに気づかせずに侮辱する能力

She poked fun at people's shortcomings with  sarcastic  remarks.

　彼女は皮肉な発言で人々の欠点をからかった。

I tried to talk to him but he got really sarcastic  and  nasty  with me.

　彼に話しかけようとしたが、彼は私にすごく辛辣で意地悪な態度を取った。

socially-arkward　社交的に不器用

often feeling unconfortable or uncertain about  what  to  say  in social stuations

　社交的な場面で何を言えばいいのか分からず、しばしば居心地の悪さや不安を感じる

He's introverted and socially-arkward, but he  occasionally  likes  going to parties.

　彼は内向的で社交的に不器用だが、たまにパーティーに行くのが好きだ。

solemn　　厳粛な

very serious rather than cheerful or humorous

　陽気でユーモアがなく、非常に真面目な

= serious, earnest, grave, sober　真面目な、真剣な、重々しい、落ち着いた

His solemn little face broke into smiles.

　彼の厳粛な小さな顔がほころんだ。

He looked solemn.

　彼は厳粛な表情をしていた。

strict　厳格な

regarding many actions as unacceptable and  do  not  allow  them

　多くの行動を許容できないものとして扱い、それを許さない

=  stern, firm, severe, harsh 　厳格な、堅い、厳しい、苛烈な

My parents were very strict.

　私の両親はとても厳しかった。

...a few schools selected for their high standards  and  their  strict  discipline.

...高い基準と厳格な規律で選ばれた数校の学校。

cf. 人や規則等が例外を許さず柔軟性が無く厳しいと非難する場合には  rigid を使うのが普通です。

Several colleges in our study have rigid rules  about  student  conduct.

　調査対象のいくつかの大学では、学生の行動規範について厳格な規則を設けている。

She was a fairly rigid person who had strong  religious  views.

　彼女はかなり堅物な人物で、強い宗教観を持っていた。

subservient　　従順な

willing to do what other people want, or considering  your  wishes  as  less important than those of other people

　他人の望むことを進んで行う、あるいは自分の望みを他人のそれより重要視しない

Women were expected to adopt a subservient role/position.

　女性は従順な役割／立場を取ることを求められていた。

His other interests were subservient to his  compelling  passion  for art.

uncompromising　　

(of a person or a person's opinions) fixed and  not  easily  changed

This uncompromising stance gave him  political  and  religious  credibility.

easy to be with and do not ask other people  to  do  a  great deal for them

having very strong, fixed ideas about something  and  are  unlikely to change their mind.

　何かについて非常に強く固執した考えを持ち、意見を変える可能性が低い

The authorities proved unyielding on one  crucial  opposition  demand.

　当局は野党の重要な要求の一つに対して頑なな姿勢を示した。

His unyielding attitude on this subject was that  since  he  had  done it, so could everyone.

　この件に関する彼の頑固な態度は、自分ができたのだから誰にでもできるというものだった。
