人物を negative に描写する形容詞  Negative Personality Adjectives２

　さて、前回シリーズまで、人格描写に利用される簡易な形容詞について解説して来ましたが、基本的な語ゆえ、多義性を持つ語が大半であり、ついでの勉強として、人格描写以外の意味についてもやや詳しく扱いました。今回シリーズからは、前回まででアブレた平易語、及び幾分かクラスを上げた人格形容詞を採りあげて行きますが、多義性を持つ語は自ずと少なくなり、それを反映させて、意味合いと例文も簡略に扱って行きます。まぁ、単語帳の様にリストアップした語についてアッサリと記述して行きます。引き続き丸暗記して下さい。

　negative な人格形容詞の数が著しく多いのですが、人間性の欠点を語るに傾く英語話者の精神的特徴が反映されているのかも知れませんね。ここでは約９０語を採りあげます。

　positive, neutral, negative な形容詞に分けて解説して行きますが、これは飽くまで便宜的な分け方であり、文脈に拠っては別の区分に該当する場合もあり得ます。

egotistical　　自己中心的な

excessively conceited or boastful

　過度にうぬぼれたり自慢したりする

= self-interested

And Pernelle had already made up her  mind  that  there  was more to Gareth than an egotistical scientist.

そしてペルネルは、ガレスには自己中心的な科学者以上の何かがあると既に確信していた。

I was slightly dreading it --- some of  those  women  are so egotistical !

deliberately avoid giving clear direct answers to  questions

= deceptive, misleading, indirect, cunning　　欺瞞的、誤解を招く、間接的、狡猾

He was evasive about the circumstances of his  first  meeting  with Stanley Dean. [+ about]

　彼はスタンリー・ディーンとの最初の出会いの経緯について話をはぐらかした。

Direct questions would almost certainly result in  evasive  answers.

　直接的な質問はほぼ確実に逃げの回答を招くだろう。

fanatical　　狂信的な

very extreme in behaviour or opinions

行動や意見が非常に極端な

= obsessive, burning, wild, mad  執着的な、燃えるような、狂った、熱狂的な

As a boy he was a fanatical patriot.

少年時代、彼は狂信的な愛国者だった。

finicky 小うるさい

worried about small details and are difficult to  please

細かいことにこだわり、満足させにくい

= fussy, difficult, particular, hard to please  うるさい、扱いにくい、こだわりが強い、満足させにくい

Even the most finicky eater will find something  appetizing  here.

最も小うるさい食通でも、ここで食欲をそそるものを見つけられるでしょう。

flakyinformal 　気まぐれで頼りにならない　（口語）

rather eccentric and unreliable

　かなり風変わりで信用できない。

He wondered if the idea wasn't just a little too  flaky,  a  little too outlandish.

　彼はその考えが少しばかり気まぐれすぎるのではないか、少しばかり突飛すぎるのではないかと考えた。

She's rather flaky, so don't be surprised if she  shows  up  two hours late.

flirtatious　　異性に対して思わせぶりな態度を取る　 軽薄な

behaving towards people in a way which suggests  they  are  sexually attracted to them, usually in a playful or not very serious way

foolhard　　無謀な

extremely risky

= rash, risky, irresponsible, reckless　　軽率な、危険な、無責任な、無謀な

You would be foolhardy in the extreme to make  use  of  the phone number I entrusted to your keeping.

　私が預けた電話番号を使うなんて、君はまったくもって無謀だ。

When he tested an early vaccine on himself, some  described  the  act as foolhardy.

forgetful　　物忘れがひどい

frivolous　軽薄な

behaving in a silly or light-hearted way, rather  than  being  serious and sensible

= flippant, foolish, dizzy [informal], superficial　軽薄な、愚かな、おバカな［口語的］、浅はかな

I just decided I was a bit too frivolous to be  a  doctor.

　医者になるには自分がちょっと軽薄すぎると気づいたんだ。

fussy　　小うるさい

・very concerned with unimportant details and  is  difficult  to please

　取るに足らない細部にこだわり、満足させにくい　

= particular, difficult, exacting, discriminating 　こだわりが強い、気難しい、要求が厳しい、選り好みする

She is not fussy about her food. [+ about]

　彼女は食べ物にはうるさくない。

Her aunt was small, with a rather fussy manner.

wanting to have more of something such  as  food  or  money than is necessary or fair

He attacked greedy bosses for  awarding  themselves  big  rises.

grumpy　不機嫌な

bad-tempered and miserable

　気難しい、不愉快

= irritable, cross, bad-tempered, grumbling　短気、不機嫌、不愉快、不平を言う

It's not just grumpy parents who have  had  enough  of  these adverts.

　こうした広告にうんざりしているのは不機嫌な親だけではない。

Being grumpy when you are old may  actually  pay  off.

　年を取って不機嫌になることは、実は得策かもしれない。

gullible 騙されやすい

easily tricked because they are too trusting

　信頼しすぎるがゆえに簡単に騙される

= trusting, innocent, naive, unsuspecting　信頼しやすい、純真な、世間知らずの、疑いを持たない

What point is there in admitting that the stories  fed  to  the gullible public were false?

　騙されやすい大衆に流された話が虚偽だと認めることに、何の意味があるというのか？

I'm so gullible I would have believed him.

hostile  敵対的な

・ disagreeing with/ disapproving of  someone  or  idea, often showing this in your behaviour

　誰かや考えに反対したり、誰かを非難したりする。しばしば行動に表れる

= unfriendly, belligerent, antagonistic, unkind　非友好的、好戦的、敵意のある、冷淡な

The West has gradually relaxed its hostile  attitude  to this influential state.　[+ to]

Many people are worryingly ignorant of  the  facts  about global warming.

・ not polite or kind. Some people think  that  it  is  not correct to use ignorant with this meaning.

　・礼儀正しくない、親切でない。この意味で 「ignorant」を使うのは正しくないとする意見もあります。

= insensitive, gross, crude, rude　無神経な、下品な、粗野な、無作法な

I met some very ignorant people who  called  me  all  kinds of names.

inconsiderate  無神経な  無配慮の

not taking enough care over how their  words  or  actions  will affect other people

= selfish, rude, insensitive, self-centred自己中心的な、無礼な、思いやりのない、自己本位の

Motorists were criticised for being  inconsiderate  to  pedestrians. [+ to]
