Sequence of Tenses  2

He said that Columbus discovered America in 1492.

cf. He said yesterday, "I found a rare plant in the forest in 2024."

He said yesterday that he had found a rare plant in the forest in 2024.

He said yesterday that he found a rare plant in the forest in 2024.

We learned that Abraham Lincoln died in 1865.

We learned that the French Revolution broke out in 1789.

4.must, ought to, should, had better

I think that he must be a nice guy.

I thought that he must be a nice guy..

I think, "You must leave at once.

I thougt that you had to leave at once.

I think that you ought to leave at once.

I thought that you ought to leave at once.

I think that you had better leave at once.

I thought that you had better leave at once.

I propose that we 〔should〕 go at once.

I proposed that we 〔should〕 go at once.

It was warmer yesterday than it is today.

He was then younger than I am now.

She sang then as well as she has done today.

At that time he was younger than I am now.

She did not run so fast as she usually does.

He says that if he were young, he would go abroad.

He said that if he were young, he would go abroad.

He says that if he were rich, he would go abroad.
