 皆様、KVC Tokyo 英語塾 塾長 藤野 健です。

 語法についてのコラムを長期間続けて来ましたが、今回からは再び文法の解説に戻り、過去のコラムにて纏まったテーマとしては扱って来なかった内容について触れていきます。まぁ、文法の落ち穂拾いとなりますが、これは扱うテーマが<落ち穂>である事とは無関係でであり大切な内容に違いはありませんのでご注意の程を。

 さて、英語には直接話法と間接話法の区別があり、これは日本語での 「...」 を使う表現の有無に相当するものになります。日本語では、<彼は私に「君は早く宿題を仕上げてくれ」と言った。>は直接話法ですが、間接話法に換えると、<彼は私に私が早く宿題を仕上げる様に言った。>となります。英語も基本的には同様の考え方での変換が行われるのですが、英語の場合は更に 「...」 内の時制を主節の動詞の時制に応じて変化させる必要が生じます。また、この作法にも幾つかの例外事例や語の用法が存在し、初学者を戸惑わせる場合も見られます。これを鑑み、注意点についてざっと一通り解説して行きましょう。これまでに採りあげてきた文法内容に比較すると理解は容易かと考えます。しかし、この理解は欠かすことの出来ないものですので知識の再確認がてら頭に叩き込んで下さい。 英語には伝聞内容や人の考えた内容を述べる為の一群の動詞が存在し、Reporting Verbs 伝達動詞、報告動詞などと呼称されます。直接話法と間接話法は、それらの動詞が取り得る表現方法の1つの違いに相当するものになります。Reporting Vebrs に関して用例を含めて詳述して行きます。その第3回目です。

口語表現をどの様に間接話法形式に変換するのかについて

簡略に例示して呉れます。

*間接話法に於いて、Reporting Verbs の後ろには、しばしば that 節、if/whether 節、或いは 疑問詞で始まる節が続きます。

*これらのものの多くは直接話法に置き換えることも可能です。その直接話法の表現が一般的に利用されるものであるかどうかは別として。


*しかし、すべての Reporting Verbs がこの様なパターンに従うわけではありません。

*個々の動詞について取り得る文型や動詞型を必ず辞書にて確認し、用法を正しく覚えることが大切です。


*reporting  verbs の原義から、いずれに於いても主節動詞以下は S+V の意味構造、<伝えたいことの中身>を持つことになります。

4.主語 + 動詞 + 前置詞 + 動名詞/名詞  <Subject + Reporting Verb + Preposition + Gerund/Noun>


apologise for

She apologised for being late.

 彼女は遅れたことを謝った。

= She apologised <she was late>.

 彼女は<私は遅刻しました>と謝った。


boast about

He boasted about winning the debate  so  easily.

 彼は、その討論にあまりに簡単に勝ったことを自慢した。

= He boasted <he won the debate so  easily>.


boast about

She boasted about her latest achievement.

 彼女は自分の最近の成果を自慢した。

= She boasted <she lately made a good  achievement>.


decide on

They decided on taking the coastal  road  home.

 彼らは、海沿いの道を通って帰ることに決めた。

= They decided <they will take the coastal  road home>.


decide on

We decided on a quieter restaurant.

 私たちは、もっと静かな店に決めた。

= We decided <they will chose a quieter  restaurant.


insist on

They insisted on bringing their children to the  meeting.

 彼らは会議に子供たちを連れてくることを主張した。

= They insisted <they should bring their children  to the meeting>.

 彼らは、<自分達が子供たちを会議に連れてくるべきだ>と主張した。


agree with

Scuttford agrees with Bodmer's assertion that  environmental  concerns have been overlooked.

 スカットフォードは、環境問題が軽視されてきたというボドマーの主張に同意している。

= Scuttford agrees  <Bodmer asserts that  environmental  concerns have been overlooked>.

 スカットフォードは <環境への懸念が見過ごされてきたとボドマーが主張している>ことに同意している。


concur with

Spalding concurs with Rogers on the need for  greater use  of  data.

 スポルディングは、データの活用をさらに進める必要性について、ロジャースの見解に同意している。

= Spalding concurs <Rogers  thinks that greater  use  of  data  is  needed>.

 スポルディングは、<ロジャースが「データの活用をさらに進める必要がある」と考えている>ことに同意している。


disapprove of

He disapproves of the current strategy for tackling  unemployment.

 彼は、失業対策に関する現在の戦略に反対している。

= He disapproves <the current strategy for  tackling  unemployment  is  inappriate>.

 彼は、<現在の失業対策の戦略は不適切である>と批判している。

S/Verbs/To/Infinitive では、後ろの動詞の主語は S ですが、

S/Verbs/Object/To/Infinitiveでは、後ろの動詞の主語は Object になります。





5.主語 + 動詞 + 人+ 不定詞  <Subject + Reporting Verb + Person + Infinitive>


*<人+不定詞>の部分が <S+法助動詞+V>の意味になります。

*(準)法助動詞を何に選ぶかは文脈に応じて適宜選択します。


advise someone to do

The doctor advised her to avoid working  late  for a few  weeks.

 医師は彼女に、数週間は遅くまで働かないよう助言した。

= The doctor advised <she should avoid working  late  for a few  weeks>.


allow someone to do

Their parents allowed them to stay out a  little  longer  after  the  festival.

 両親は彼らに、祭りのあともう少し外にいてよいと許した。

= Their parents allowed <they can stay out a  little  longer  after  the  festival>.


challenge someone to do

The professor challenged his students to  question  even  their  most familiar assumptions.

 教授は学生たちに、最もなじみ深い思い込みでさえ疑うよう促した。

= The professor challenged <his students may question  even  their  most familiar assumptions>.


command someone to do

The officer commanded the soldiers to retreat  before  the  bridge  collapsed.

 将校は兵士たちに、橋が崩れる前に退却するよう命じた。

= The officer commanded <the soldiers had to retreat  before  the  bridge  collapsed>.


compel someone to do

The evidence compelled the committee to  reconsider  its  earlier  decision.

 その証拠は委員会に、以前の決定を再考せざるをえなくさせた。

= The evidence compelled <the committee will reconsider  its  earlier  decision>.


encourage someone to do

Her teacher encouraged her to submit the  poem  to  a national  contest.

 先生は彼女に、その詩を全国大会に応募するよう励ました。

= Her teacher encouraged <she will submit the  poem  to  a national  contest>.


forbid someone to do

His father forbade him to mention the matter  again  at  the  dinner  table.

 父は彼に、その件を夕食の席で二度と口にしないよう禁じた。

= His father forbade <he will mention the matter  again  at  the  dinner  table>.


force someone to do

The storm forced the hikers to turn back  before  reaching  the  summit.

 嵐のため、登山者たちは頂上に着く前に引き返さざるをえなかった。

= The storm forced <the hikers will turn back  before  reaching  the  summit>.


implore someone to do

She implored him to listen before making a  final  decision.

彼女は彼に、最終的な決断を下す前に話を聞いてほしいと懇願した。

= She implored <he will listen before making a  final  decision>.


inform someone to do

The assistant informed the customer to wait  in  the lobby.

 受付係は客にロビーで待つよう伝えた。

= The assistant informed <the customer is to wait  in  the lobby>.

cf.  informed + 人 + to do はフォーマルな文脈ではあまり好まれず、通常 は informed the customer that he should wait… のように that 節で表現するが多いです。


invite someone to do

They invited us to join them for dinner after the  concert.

 彼らは私たちを、コンサートのあと夕食に一緒に行こうと誘った。

= They invited <we willjoin them for dinner after the  concert.


order someone to do

The judge ordered the witness to answer the  question  directly.

 裁判官は証人に、その質問に直接答えるよう命じた。

= The judge ordered <the witness should answer the  question  directly>.


permit someone to do

The school permitted the students to use the library  during  the  holiday.

 学校は生徒たちに、休暇中も図書館を使うことを許可した。

= The school permitted <the students can use the library  during  the  holiday>.


persuade someone to do

The principal finally persuaded the reluctant parents  to  allow  their  daughter  to  participate in the overseas study program,

 校長は渋っていた両親を説得し、娘が海外留学プログラムに参加することをついに承諾させた。

= The principal finally persuaded <the reluctant parents  should  allow  their  daughter  to  participate in the overseas study program,


remind someone to do

He reminded me to lock the back door before going to  bed.

 彼は私に、寝る前に裏口に鍵をかけるよう念を押した。

= He reminded <I need to lock the back door  before  going  to  bed.


request

The chairman requested the members to remain silent  during  the  vote.

 議長は会員たちに、採決の間は静かにしているよう求めた。

= The chairman requested <the members should remain silent  during  the  vote>.


tell someone to do

She told him to wait by the gate until she  returned.

 彼女は彼に、自分が戻るまで門のそばで待つよう言った。

= She told <he should wait by the gate until  she  returned.


urge someone to do

His friends urged him to apologize before the  misunderstanding  grew  worse.

 友人たちは彼に、誤解がさらに深まる前に謝るよう強く勧めた。

= His friends urged <he should apologize before the  misunderstanding  grew  worse.


warn someone to do

The guide warned the visitors to keep away  from the  cliff  edge  in  the  strong  wind.

 ガイドは見物客たちに、強風の中では崖の縁に近づかないよう警告した。

= The guide warned <the visitors should keep away  from the  cliff  edge  in  the  strong  wind>.
