Reporting Verbs 7

Reporting Verbs 2

A.発話系の Reporting Verbs

*このグループの動詞は基本的に直接話法 ⇔ 間接話法 の言い換えを自由且つ自然に行うことが出来ます。

*但し、例外もあります。

1.中立的な 「言う・話す」系 (つづき)

announce  宣言する、公に知らせる

to tell people something publicly

  直接話法

The king stepped onto the balcony and announced, “From this day on, the war is over.”

   国王はバルコニーに歩み出て、こう宣布した。「今日この日をもって、戦争は終わりだ。」

   間接話法

The king stepped onto the balcony and announced that the war was over from that day on.

   国王はバルコニーに歩み出て、その日をもって戦争が終わったと宣布した。

   直接話法

She lifted her glass and announced, “This is our last night under this roof.”

  彼女はグラスを掲げて、こう告げた。「この屋根の下で過ごす夜は、今夜が最後よ。」

   間接話法

She lifted her glass and announced that it was their last night under that roof.

   彼女はグラスを掲げて、今夜がこの屋根の下で過ごす最後の夜なのだと告げた。

proclaim  宣言する、高らかに宣言する (大仰な宣言)

to announce something publicly and formally

  直接話法

Standing in the ruined square, the priest proclaimed, “Hope has not died with this city.”

   崩れ落ちた広場に立ちながら、司祭は高らかに宣言した。「希望は、この街と共に死んではいない。」

   間接話法

Standing in the ruined square, the priest proclaimed that hope had not died with the city.

   崩れ落ちた広場に立ちながら、司祭は希望はこの街と共に死んではいないのだと宣言した。

pronounce 正式に宣言する

to officially or formally declare something, or to state a judgment publicly

何かを正式に宣言する、または、公に判断を言い渡す

  直接話法

The judge pronounced, “This ancient house shall remain untouched by greedy hands forever.”

  裁判官は「この古い家は、貪欲な者の手から永遠に守られるべきだ」と宣言した。

  間接話法

The judge pronounced that the ancient house would remain untouched by greedy hands forever.

  裁判官は、その古い家が貪欲な者の手から永遠に守られるだろうと宣言した。

*pronounce は公的で厳かな響きがあり、judge, priest, doctor, king など、立場のある人を主語にするとピタリと来ます。

cf. 発音する、との全く別の意味もあります。

declare  宣言する

to say something clearly and officially

   直接話法

"This is the last time I will help you," he declared, his voice echoing in the empty hall.

   彼は「これでお前を助けるのは最後だ」と宣言し、その声は誰もいない広間にこだました。

   間接話法

He declared that it would be the last time he helped her, as if pronouncing a sentence.

   彼は、これが彼女を助ける最後の機会になるのだと、まるで判決を言い渡すかのように宣言した。

observe 述べる じっくり観察した上で述べる

to say what you have noticed,  to make a remark, comment

   直接話法

"No one is really listening," she observed, stirring her tea without looking up.

   彼女は顔を上げずに紅茶をかき回しながら「誰も本当には聞いていないわね」と言った。

   間接話法

She observed that no one was really listening and went back to her book.

   彼女は誰も本当には聞いていないと周囲を見回すように言い、それから本に目を戻した。

"That’s an interesting idea," he observed.

   「それは面白い考えだね」と彼は述べた。

The teacher observed, “Many students struggled with this question.”

to say something in an indirect way

*直接話法ではセリフ自体ははっきり書きつつ、「本心は別にある」ことを匂わせる表現です。

   直接話法

She smiled faintly and hinted, “Maybe it’s time someone else took charge.”

   彼女はかすかにほほえみ、こう仄めかした。「そろそろ、誰か別の人が指揮を執る頃かもしれないわね。」

   間接話法

She smiled faintly and hinted that it might be time for someone else to take charge.

   彼女はかすかにほほえみ、そろそろ誰か別の人が指揮を執る頃かもしれないとほのめかした。

   直接話法

“I’m not saying you should leave,” he hinted, “but you might be happier somewhere far away from here.”

   「出て行けなんて言わないよ」と彼はほのめかすように言った。「ただ、ここから遠く離れた場所の方が、君は幸せかもしれない。」

   間接話法

He hinted that she might be happier if she lived somewhere far away, though he never actually told her to leave.

   彼は、彼女がどこか遠く離れた場所に住んだ方がもっと幸せかもしれないと、出て行けとは決して口にしないままほのめかした。

What Are The 7 Steps In Going To Confession (Reconciliation)?

Father Richard Gonzales  2022/08/01

カトリックのゴンザレス神父が教会に「懺悔」に行く7つの手順を教えてくれます。

confedss は<告白する>と訳されますが、実際のところはキリスト教での自

身の罪の告白、懺悔を行うの意味で広く用いられます。

note  指摘する、言及する、書き留める formal な書き言葉でよく使います

to mention or point out something briefly, often in a calm or careful way

  直接話法

"You're still wearing that ring," he noted, his eyes dropping to her hand.

   「まだその指輪をしているんだね」と、彼は彼女の手に視線を落としながら言った。

*自然な流れの文であり直接話法との組み合わせでも自然です。

   間接話法

He noted that she was still wearing that ring, his eyes dropping to her hand.

   彼は、彼女がまだその指輪をしているのに気づき、彼女の手に視線を落とした。

She glanced at her watch and noted, "The deadline is next Monday, so we don't have much time."

   彼女は腕時計にちらりと目をやり、「締め切りは来週の月曜日だから、あまり時間がないわね」と言った。

*動詞 note は論文調の硬い動詞ですので、直接話法に違和感が出る場合があります。

*この noted を said, remarked, pointed out  にすると自然になります。

"You forgot question five," she noted.

   「5番の問題を忘れていますよ」と彼女は指摘した。

*これは事務的な硬い表現になりますが、文脈に合っているなら自然な表現になります。

The report notes that fish is good for health.

  報告書は、魚は健康に良いと言及している。

*note.com なるサイトもありますが、言いたいことを吐き出して書き留める、の趣旨かと思います。

repeat 繰り返して言う

to say something again

   直接話法

"I’m not going back there," he repeated, more firmly than before.

   彼は先ほどよりも強い調子で「もう二度とあそこには戻らない」と繰り返した。

   間接話法

He repeated that he was not going back there, as if repetition alone could make it true.

   彼は、もう二度とあそこには戻らないのだと、繰り返すことでそれを真実にしようとするかのように言い立てた。

profess 信念・感情などを公言・自称する

to state openly what you claim to feel or believe, sometimes with a hint of doubt about its sincerity

 自分の感情や信念だと主張することを公然と述べる語で、ときにその誠実さに疑いが含意されます

*日本語の<宣う>の語感に、<こいつ、大口叩きやがって>の揶揄の気持ちを込めるのとちょっと似ています。

*となると、教授 professor は大口叩き屋の意味になってしまい・・・

*実際には、a professor = a person who professes to be an expert in some art or science; teacher of highest rank

  ある芸術や科学の専門家を自称する者;最高位の教師、の意味になります。

   間接話法

He professed that he had no interest in power but only in justice.

He professed to have no interest in power, only in justice. (このスタイルは会話でも文章でも良く使われます)

He professed no interest in power, butonly in justice.

   彼は、自分には権力には全く関心がなく、正義にのみ関心があると公言した。

   直接話法

"I have no interest in power but only in justice," he said/declared.

    「私は権力には全く関心がない、関心があるのは正義だけだ」と公言した。

*動詞 profess は日常的な発話より、立場の表明に寄る動詞ですので直接話法に繋ぐとやや不自然になります。

*said やdeclared にすると自然になります。

confess 打ち明ける 告白する、自白する、懺悔する

to admit something, especially something one feels guilty or ashamed about

   直接話法

"I read your letters and never answered," she confessed in a shaking voice.

   「あなたの手紙は全部読んでいたのに、一度も返事を書かなかったの」と、彼女は震える声で打ち明けた。

   間接話法

In a shaking voice, she confessed that she had read his letters and had never answered.

   震える声で、彼女は彼の手紙を読んでいながら一度も返事を書かなかったのだと打ち明けた。

*接尾語 fess の語源は to speak, tell, say. であり、con =together の意味から<仲間内で言明を share する>、ですね。

*キリスト教圏では confess は、自らの罪を告白する、懺悔する、の意味で一般的に用いられる動詞です。

reflect 考慮した上で慎重な意見を述べる、しみじみ語る

to say or think something in a thoughtful way, often after consideration

   間接話法

After a pause, she reflected that they might have misjudged him.

   ひと息おいて彼女は、自分たちは彼を誤って判断していたかもしれないとしみじみ語った。

   直接話法

After a pause, she said, "We may have misjudged him."

   ひと息おいて彼女は「私たちは彼を誤って判断していたのかもしれないわ」と言った。

*reflect は心の中で考える、振り返って述べるの意味で使われ、said や murmured のような会話タグにはなりにくい動詞です。
