一般的に利用される Reporting Verbs 4A.発話系の Reporting Verbs*このグループの動詞は基本的に直接話法 ⇔ 間接話法 の言い換えを自由且つ自然に行うことが出来ます。*但し、例外もあります。2.「感情を伴う話し方」系 (つづき)*以下 stutter までの動詞は通常は大学入試にも出ず、また文学作品以外にはほぼ登場しませんので飛ばして戴いて構いません。荒い口調・感情の爆発bark 怒鳴るように言う (軍隊風、上からの口調、短い命令)to say something in a loud, sharp, abrupt, and commanding way, often as if giving an order and with little warmth or patience.きつく鋭く怒鳴るように言う、命令口調でぶっきらぼうに言う直接話法"Sit down and listen," the captain barked, his words cracking through the cabin like a whip.船長は「座って聞け」と怒鳴りつけ、その言葉は鞭のように船室の空気を裂いた。間接話法The captain barked at them to sit down and listen, his words cracking through the cabin like a whip..船長は座って聞けと怒鳴りつけ、そこには反論の余地などなかった。The captain barked that you should sit down and listen, his words cracking through the cabin like a whip.*that 節を利用した表現も取れますが、硬い、やや不自然な表現になります。growl うなり声をあげる、唸るように言う (内にこもる敵意)to speak in a low, rough, angry voice, often suggesting suppressed irritation or hostility.低くうなるような声で言う、怒りやいら立ちを押し殺して言う直接話法"Touch that again and you'll regret it," he growled under his breath.彼は「もう一度触ってみろ、後悔させてやる」と低く唸るように言った。間接話法He growled that if they touched it again, they would regret it.彼は、もしもう一度それに触れれば必ず後悔するぞと唸るように言った。He lowered his head and growled, "Don't touch my things ever again."彼はうつむき、うなり声を上げて言った。「二度と俺の物に手を出すな。」snap ぴしゃりと言う、怒って短く言うto speak suddenly in a sharp, irritated, or impatient way, usually in response to something that annoys the speaker.かっとしてきつく言い返す、いら立ってぴしゃりと言う直接話法"I said I’m fine," she snapped, the lie flashing brighter than the tears in her eyes.彼女は目に涙をにじませながらも「大丈夫だって言ったでしょう」とぴしゃりと言い放った。間接話法She snapped that she was fine, though her voice was frayed at the edges.彼女は自分は大丈夫だときつく言い返したが、その声の端々は今にもほつれそうだった。retort 言い返す、切り返す (会話の応酬)to reply quickly, sharply, and often angrily or defensively to a remark or accusation.鋭く言い返す、反発して即座に応酬する直接話法"And what would you know about loyalty?" she retorted, her smile thin and dangerous.彼女は危ういほど薄く笑いながら「あなたに忠誠の何が分かるっていうの」と鋭く言い返した。間接話法She retorted that he knew nothing about loyalty, cutting him down with a single question.彼女は、彼には忠誠の何一つ分かっていないのだと言い返し、そのひと言で彼を切り捨てた。 |

hiss シッと言う音を立てる (抑えた怒り 人前なので怒鳴れないが怒っている)to say something in a quiet but intense way through clenched teeth or with a whispering, snake-like sharpness, often in anger.歯の間からシッと鋭く言う、怒りをこめて低く吐き出すように言う直接話法"Keep your voice down," he hissed, the words sliding between his teeth like steam.彼はシッと歯の隙間から蒸気のように言葉を漏らし「声を抑えろ」と言った。間接話法He hissed at me to keep my voice down, the words sliding between his teeth like steam.彼は私に声を小さくするよう、歯の間から蒸気のように言葉を漏らすように囁いた。He hissed that you should keep your voice down, the words sliding between his teeth like steam.*この表現も取れますが、会話文では上の2つのスタイルが自然です。gasp あえぐように言う (内容より、息の乱れが描写の中心)to say something while taking a quick breath in, usually because of shock, fear, pain, or great surprise.息をのんで言う、 怒りではなく驚きや恐れ、痛みであえぐように言う直接話法"You knew all along?" he gasped, the words barely finding enough air.彼は息も絶え絶えに「最初から知っていたのか」とかろうじて声を絞り出した。間接話法He gasped that she had known all along, unable to decide whether to be hurt or relieved.彼女は最初から知っていたのだと彼はあえぐように言い、それを悲しむべきか安堵すべきか迷っていた。くぐもった声・叫びmumble もごもご言う、ぼそぼそつぶやくto say something in a low, unclear, and not easily heard way, often because of shyness, embarrassment, tiredness, or unwillingness to speak clearly.自信のなさ、気まずさ、面倒くささからもごもご言う、小さく不明瞭につぶやく直接話法"Didn't mean to cause trouble," he mumbled into his collar.彼は襟元に顔を埋め「迷惑かけるつもりはなかった」とぼそぼそつぶやいた。間接話法He mumbled that he had not meant to cause trouble, words dissolving before they reached her.彼は、迷惑をかけるつもりはなかったのだと呟いたが、その言葉は彼女の耳に届く前に消え失せてしまった。groan うめく、うめき声を上げる (内容を伝えるというより苦しさやうんざり感を音声で見せる 肉体的苦痛にも精神的うんざりにも使える)to say something with a long, low sound that expresses pain, disappointment, exhaustion, or annoyance.うめくように言う、苦痛や失望やうんざりした気持ちをにじませて言う直接話法“Not another secret,” he groaned, pressing his palms to his eyes.彼は両手で目を押さえながら「もう秘密はこりごりだ」とうめいた。間接話法He groaned that there was yet another secret to deal with.彼は、向き合わねばならない秘密がまた一つ増えたのだとうめくように言った。直接話法"This day just keeps getting better," she groaned, irony heavy in her voice.彼女は皮肉たっぷりの声で「今日は本当に、どんどん素晴らしい日になっていくわね」とうめいた。間接話法She groaned that the day was only getting better and better, meaning exactly the opposite.彼女は、今日はますます素晴らしい日になっていくと、まるで逆の意味を込めてうめくように言った。 |
