https://dictionary.cambridge.org/grammar/british-grammar/reported-speech-direct-speechhttps://www.eapfoundation.com/writing/references/reporting/https://www.ncl.ac.uk/academic-skills-kit/writing/academic-writing/reporting-verbs/https://latrobe.libguides.com/writing/reporting-verbshttps://www.efjapan.co.jp/eigo-resources/english-grammar/reporting-verbs/https://www.twinkl.jp/blog/reporting-verbshttps://www.frontiersin.org/journals/psychology/articles/10.3389/fpsyg.2026.1799996/fullPsychol., 02 April 2026 Volume 17 - 2026 | https://doi.org/10.3389/fpsyg.2026.1799996Reporting verbs across genre sets and research paradigms: a corpus-based analysis of denotation and evaluation in applied linguistics research articlesLiming Deng & Xinyue Lihttps://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/facpub/6373/Reporting verb variation across disciplines: An academic corpus studyGrant Eckstein, et al. ournal of Academic Language & Learning Vol. 16, No. 1, 2022, 59-75. *この際にニュアンスを掴んでください!consider 考察する、考えるto think about something carefully, often before making a judgment, decision, or statementある事柄について、判断や結論を出す前によく検討する間接話法Watching the waves fade into the dark, she considered that silence was the only honest answer between them then.闇の中に消えていく波を見つめながら、彼女は、今の二人のあいだでは沈黙だけが唯一の正直な答えだと考えていた。直接話法Watching the waves fade into the dark, she thought, “Silence is the only honest answer between us now.”波が闇に溶けていくのを見つめながら、彼女は思った。「今、私たちの間で、沈黙こそが唯一の正直な答えなのだわ」と。*consider はやや硬い表現ですので、直接話法では think を用いる方が良いでしょう。think 考える 思うto have an idea, opinion, belief, or mental process about someone or something人や物事について考える、思う、という最も広い意味の語です。直接話法She thought, “He seems calm today, yet something in his voice still worries me.”彼女は「今日は彼は落ち着いて見えるが、その声にはまだ気がかりなものがある」と思った。間接話法She thought that he seemed calm that day, yet something in his voice still worried her.彼女は、その日彼は落ち着いて見えたが、その声にはまだ気がかりなものがあると思った。take into consideration 事情を考慮に入れる 事情・条件を斟酌し判断に織り込むto include something as an important factor in your thinking or decision何かを思考や判断の重要な要素として織り込む間接話法The judge took into consideration that the man had acted in despair.”裁判官は彼が絶望のうちに行動したという事情を考慮に入れた。直接話法は成立しません。believe 信じるto think that something is true, or to feel certain that someone or something is trustworthy or realあることを真実だと思う、または人や物事を信じる間接話法She believed that every city keeps a secret night for those who dare to stay awake.彼女はどんな街にも、眠ることを拒む者たちのための、ひそかな夜が一つはあると信じていた。直接話法She said, "Every city keeps a secret night for those who dare to stay awake."彼女は「どんな街にも、眠ることを拒む者たちのための、ひそかな夜が一つはあるのよ。」と言った。*believed that 以下を、そのまま彼女の「信条としての発話」にしています。imagine 想像する 思い描くto form a mental picture or idea of something that is not present, real, or known with certainty実際に目の前にないことや、確かでないことを心の中で思い描く間接話法Almost carried away by the waves, she imagined that the sea remembered every word they threw into the wind.波にさらわれそうになりながら、彼女は、海は自分たちが風に投げかけた言葉を一つ残らず覚えているのだと想像した。直接話法Almost carried away by the waves, she said, "The sea remembers every word we throw into the wind."波にさらわれそうになりながら、彼女は、「海は自分たちが風に投げかけた言葉を一つ残らず覚えているのね」と言った。*動詞 imagine は直接の会話体とは馴染みません。言葉にして出す以上は<想像する>ではなく<言う>になります。*that 節の代わりに -ing 句を使うと、少し詩的でイメージ喚起的な表現になります。Almost carried away by the waves, she imagined the sea remembering every word they threw into the wind.波にさらわれそうになりながら、彼女は、彼らが風に投げかけた一つ一つの言葉を海が覚えているところを思い描いた。*the sea remembering = the sea's remembering は、the sea remembered の文を名詞句化したものです。figure informal 口語 そう考える 〜だと判断するto think, judge, or conclude that something is true, often after some quick reasoning, personal impression, or available evidence少し考えてそうだと判断する、そう見当をつける、そう考える 厳密な証明に基づく断定というより、手元の情報や印象から実際的にそう判断する*that 節中に、判断の理由を示す文言を含める事が多いです。直接話法She figured, “Tom knows the way, so we can follow him through the forest.”彼女は「トムは道を知っているから、森では彼について行けばよい」と考えた。間接話法She figured that Tom knew the way, so they could follow him through the forest.彼女は、トムは道を知っているので、彼について行けるだろうと考えた。 |

B2.「仮定する」系assume 取りあえずそう思う 見倣す 決めてかかる 仮定するto accept or think that something is true without having full proof, often as a starting point for reasoning, judgment, or further thought十分な証拠がないまま、あることを真実だとみなす、そうだと仮定する*ラテン語の assumere, adsumere = ad "to, toward, up to" + sumere "to take"to take up, take to oneself, take besides, obtain= to take for granted without proof as the basis of argument証拠なしに当然のこととして受け止め、それを議論の根拠とする間接話法He closed the heavy door behind him and assumed that she already knew w hy he had come.彼は背後で重い扉を閉め、彼女が既に自分の来訪の理由を知っているものと取りあえず思った。直接話法He closed the heavy door behind him and said, “You already know why I’ve come.”彼は背後で重い扉を閉め、「なぜ僕が来たのか君は知っているよね。」と言った。*動詞 assume は直接話法を繋げるとやや不自然になります。単純に said を用います。presume (状況を元に)推定・判断する 仮定するto believe that something is true because it seems very likely, even though you are not completely sure完全には確信していないが、状況から見て「おそらくそうだ」と信じる*丁寧で控えめな「そうだと見なす・推定する」という含みを持つことが多いです。*何らかの事情からそう判断している、との根拠を添えると自然な文になり易いですが、必須と言うわけではありません。間接話法He quietly presumed that she had already read the letter, for her eyes looked as if the night had grown longer.彼は、彼女の目が夜が長くなったかのように見えたので、彼女はすでに手紙を読んでいるのだろうと静かに推測した。直接話法"You have likely already read the letter, for your eyes look as if the night has grown longer," he presumed quietly.「すでに手紙をお読みになったのでしょうね」と、彼は静かに言った。 He supposed that the silence between them concealed more truths than their years of conversation ever had.彼は、二人のあいだに漂う沈黙には、多分、これまでの長年の会話よりも多くの真実が隠されているのだろうと思った。= He thought that the silence between them probably concealed more truths than their years of conversation ever had.直接話法"The silence between them probably concealed more truths than their years of conversation ever had," he thought.「二人のあいだに漂う沈黙には、多分これまでの長年の会話よりも多くの真実が隠されているのだろう」と彼は思った。*動詞 suppose は直接話法を繋げるとやや不自然になります。単純に thought that + probably を用います。間接話法She supposed that in another life, they might have met without the shadows that now followed them.彼女は、別の人生だったら、今のような影を引きずることなく二人は出会えたのかもしれないと考えていた。直接話法"In another life, we might have met without the shadows that now followed us," she thought.彼女は、「別の人生だったら、今のような影を引きずることなく私たちは出会えたのかもしれない」と考えていた。cf. こちらの用法の suppose ≒ if になります"Suppose you did remember,” she whispered. “Would it change anything between us?"「もしあなたが思い出したとして」と彼女はささやいた。「それで私たちの間に何か変化はあるのかしら」postulate 理論構成のために前提として置く、仮定する 基本原理、必要条件を提示する、提唱するto state, propose, or assume that something is true, especially as a basis for further reasoning, discussion, or theory何かが真実であると述べたり、提案したり、あるいは仮定したりする。特に、それをもとにさらなる推論、議論、あるいは理論を展開するための基礎として*ある事柄が真である、または存在すると仮に示す*ラテン語の動詞 postulare "to ask, demand; claim; require 求める、に由来します。*一応この場で触れましたが、本来は学術などの硬い用途向きの語であり、一般的には assume, suppose, think, guess などのほうが自然です。間接話法The philosopher postulated that we should imagine a world in which justice is not merely an ideal but a condition of existence itself.その哲学者は、正義が単なる理想ではなく、存在そのものの条件であるような世界を想像すべきだと提唱した。直接話法"For the sake of argument," the philosopher said, "let us imagine a world in which justice is not merely an ideal but a condition of existence itself."「議論のために、こう仮定してみましょう」と哲学者は言った。「正義が単なる理念ではなく、存在そのものの条件となっている世界を想像するのです。」*直接話法は作為的且つ硬く不自然になります。上記直接話法の例文では、postulated を said に代えて自然な表現にしています。 |
