　皆様、KVC Tokyo 英語塾　塾長　藤野　健です。

　語法についてのコラムを長期間続けて来ましたが、今回シリーズからは再び文法の解説に戻り、過去のコラムにて纏まったテーマとしては扱って来なかった内容について触れていきます。まぁ、文法の落ち穂拾いとなりますが、これは扱うテーマが＜落ち穂＞である事とは無関係であり大切な内容に違いはありませんのでご注意の程を。

　さて、英語には直接話法と間接話法の区別があり、これは日本語での ｢...｣ を使う表現の有無に相当するものになります。日本語では、＜彼は私に｢君は早く宿題を仕上げてくれ｣と言った。＞は直接話法ですが、間接話法に換えると、＜彼は私に私が早く宿題を仕上げる様に言った。＞となります。英語も基本的には同様の考え方での変換が行われるのですが、英語の場合は更に 「...」 内の時制を主節の動詞の時制に応じて変化させる必要が生じます。また、この作法にも幾つかの例外事例や語の用法が存在し、初学者を戸惑わせる場合も見られます。これを鑑み、注意点についてざっと一通り解説して行きましょう。これまでに採りあげてきた文法内容に比較すると理解は容易かと考えます。しかし、この理解は欠かすことの出来ないものですので知識の再確認がてら頭に叩き込んで下さい。　英語には伝聞内容や人の考えた内容を述べる為の一群の動詞が存在し、Reporting Verbs 伝達動詞、報告動詞などと呼称されます。直接話法と間接話法は、それらの動詞が取り得る表現方法の１つの違いに相当するものになります。Reporting Vebrs に関して用例を含めて詳述して行きます。その第２０回目です。

動詞 urge は単に「促」すの意味では無く、「強く促す」、圧力を加えて「急き立てる」です。


一般的に利用される　Reporting Verbs １５


Ｂ．非発話系の Reporting Verbs


＊伝達する言葉内容にとどまらず伝達する態度の方にも重点を持つ表現であり、直接話法で利用される割合は相当程度下がります。

＊以下の用例解説をご覧戴ければそれが理解できる筈です。

＊動詞に拠り、後ろに that 節を取る以外の用法も取り得ますが、全ての用法を網羅している訳ではありません。

＊それについてはご自身で英英辞書を参照し確認されることをお勧め致します。



Ｂ１２．「命令・助言」系


＊V + someone + to do の動詞型を取れるものが殆どになります。


order　　命じる、注文する

to tell someone firmly that they must do something, usually  because  you have authority over them.

 たいてい自分の権限を背景にして、相手に何かを必ずするよう強く命じる


   直接話法

   "Stay where you are," the officer ordered, hand on his  weapon.

   武器に手を添えたまま、その警官は「その場を動くな」と命じた。

   間接話法

   With his hand on his weapon, the officer ordered them to  stay where they were.

   武器に手を添えたまま、その警官は彼らにその場から動かないよう命じた。


　　The officer ordered that they should stay where they  were, hand on his weapon.

＊この様に order that も文法的には取り得ますが、会話や小説なら　ordered them to stay … のほうがずっと自然です。



command　　命令する

to give a formal or very strong order, especially in a military  or  official context.

 とくに軍隊や公的な場面で、非常に強い命令を下す


   直接話法

   "Close the gates at once," the captain commanded.

    「すぐに門を閉めろ」と船長は命じた。

  間接話法

   The captain commanded them to close the gates at once.

   船長は彼らに、すぐに門を閉めるよう命じた。


  　△The captain commanded that he should close the gates  at  once.

＊commanded that he should … は学校文法や古めの文体でよく出るスタイルであり文法的には可能ですが、今の英語ではやや不自然です。



mandate  公的に命じる  義務づける

to officially require or order something by means of formal, legal, institutional, or governmental authority.

　正式な権限、法律、制度、または行政上の権威によって、何かを公的に命じること、または義務づける


　　　間接話法

　　　The council mandated that all fires be extinguished before moonrise within the ancient quarter.

　　　評議会は、旧市街では月の出の前にすべての火を消すよう命じた。

　　　直接話法

　　　The council announced/declared, "All fires shall be extinguished before moonrise within the ancient quarter."

　　　評議会は、旧市街では月の出の前にすべての火を消さねばならないと発表／宣言した。

＊直接話法は不自然になります。



instruct　　　指示する、教える

to tell someone exactly what to do and often how to do it,  especially  in  a detailed or official way.

　とくに詳しく、あるいは事務的に、何をどうするべきかを正確に指示する


   直接話法

   "Read the letter only when you're alone," she instructed  quietly.

    彼女は「一人のときにだけこの手紙を読みなさい」と静かに指示した。

  間接話法

   She quietly instructed him to read the letter only when he  was  alone.

   彼女は彼に、一人のときにだけその手紙を読むよう静かに指示した。


   △She quietly instructed  her students that they should  read  the  letter  only when they were alone.  

＊instructed … that they should … は学校英語的であり、話し言葉や自然な文章ではあまり使いません。



direct　　　指図する、命じる

to officially guide, control, or tell a person or group what action they  should  take.

　人や集団が取るべき行動を、公式に導いたり統制したり指示したりする


   直接話法

   "Send all complaints to my office," the manager  directed  with  a  thin  smile.

   マネージャーは薄く笑いながら「苦情はすべて私のオフィスに送ってください」と指示した。

   間接話法

   The manager directed, with a thin smile, that all  complaints  should  be  sent to his office.

   マネージャーは薄く笑いながら、苦情はすべて自分のオフィスに送るよう指示した。



urge　　強く促す、急き立てる

to strongly encourage or press someone to do something  because  you  think  it is important or necessary.

　それが重要または必要だと考えて、相手に何かをするよう強く勧める


   直接話法

   "Go now, before you change your mind," he urged, pushing  the  keys  into  her hand.

   彼は鍵を彼女の手に押し込みながら「気が変わる前に、今すぐ行け」と強く促した。

   間接話法

   He urged her to go then, before she changed her mind,  pushing the  keys  into  her hand.

   彼は鍵を彼女の手に押し込みながら、気が変わってしまう前に今すぐ行くよう彼女に強く促した。


　　We urged that they shouldn't take the rumor at face  value.

　　我々はその噂を鵜呑みにしないよう彼らに促した。



warn　警告する、注意を与える

to tell someone about a possible danger, problem, or bad  result so that  they  can  avoid it.

　危険や問題や悪い結果の可能性を相手に知らせて、それを避けられるようにする


   直接話法

   "Don't trust anyone who smiles too easily," she  warned,  lowering her  voice.

   彼女は声を落として「簡単に笑ってみせる人は誰も信用しないことね」と警告した。

  間接話法

   She warned him not to trust anyone who smiled  too  easily,  lowering  her  voice.

   彼女は声を落として、簡単に笑ってみせる人は誰も信用しないよう彼に警告した。


   △ She warned, lowering her voice, that he should  not  trust  anyone  who  smiled  too easily.

＊warned that he should not … は文法的には取り得ますが、会話や物語では少し硬く、よそよそしい感じになります。

advise   忠告する、アドバイスする、助言する

to give someone a recommendation about what they should do. It  can  also mean to inform someone of something in formal use

　相手が何をすべきかについて助言や勧告を与える　　硬い用法では、何かを知らせるという意味でも使われる


   直接話法

   "Sleep on it before you decide," he advised, gathering the  papers.

    書類を集めながら、彼は「決める前に一晩よく考えてみなさい」と忠告した。

  間接話法

   Gathering the papers, he advised her to sleep on it before  she  decided.

   彼は書類を集めながら、決断する前に一晩よく考えるよう彼女に忠告した。


　　△ He advised, gathering the papers, that he should sleep  on  it before he decided.

＊現代英語では advise 人 to … が普通であり、advise that he  should … は硬くて古風です。


  "You should take a rest," the doctor advised.

   医者は「少し休んだほうがいいですよ」と助言した。



remind   思い出させる、念を押す、注意を促す

to help someone remember something, or to tell them  something  they  may have forgotten.

　相手が何かを思い出せるようにしたり、忘れているかもしれないことを伝えたりする


   直接話法

   "You promised to be honest with me," she reminded  him  softly.

   彼女は「私に正直でいるって約束したでしょう」と、そっと彼に念を押した。

   間接話法

   She reminded him softly that he had promised to be  honest  with  her.

   She gently reminded him of his promise to be honest  with  her.

   彼女は、彼が自分に正直でいると約束していたことを、そっと彼に思い出させた。

＊<remind +人 +that節> は普通に使う表現です。


   直接話法

   "You should carefully read the draft report before making  any  hasty  remarks on its implications," the chairman gently reminded the board members.

   「報告書の草案について、その意味合いについて軽率な発言をする前に、よく目を通すべきだ」と、会長は取締役たちに穏やかに注意を促した。

　　間接話法

   The chairman gently reminded the board members to carefully  read  the draft report before making any hasty remarks on its implications.

    会長は、報告書草案が示唆する意味について性急な発言をする前に、その内容を注意深く読むよう、取締役たちに穏やかに注意を促した。



forbid  行為を明確に禁止する

to say that someone is not allowed to do something, often with  strong  authority.

　（多くの場合、強い権威をもって）ある人に何かをしてはならないと告げる


   間接話法

    The old judge forbade him to speak of that night ever  again.

   老判事は、彼にその夜のことを二度と口にしないよう禁じた。


これを

   直接話法

   ×"You must never speak of this night again," the old judge  forbade  him.

    彼は「今夜のことを二度と口にしてはならぬ」と老判事に禁じられた。

　　とするのは相当に不自然で、

   "You must never speak of this night again," the old judge said  to  him. にします。

＊発言内容が既に禁止を示しており、forbade が冗語にもなります



encourage  励ます　行為を促進し気力を鼓舞する

to give someone confidence, support, or hope so that they will  do  something

　相手に自信や支えや希望を与えて、何かをする気持ちにさせる


    間接話法

   She encouraged him to tell them the truth, as if a single  confession  could set him free.

   彼女は、ただ一度の告白で彼が解放されるかのように、真実を打ち明けるよう彼を励ました。

＊動詞 encourage は後ろに that 節や直接話法は取りません。



convince  信じさせる　真実であると人を確信させる

to make someone believe that something is true, right, or  reasonable,  often  by giving reasons or evidence

　理由や証拠を示して、何かが正しい、真実だ、もっともだと相手に信じさせる


    間接話法

   He convinced himself loudly that the person knew he was  right  and  that the person just didn't want to admit it.

   彼はその人物は彼が正しいことは知っているがただ認めたくないだけだ」と声に出して自分を納得させた。


＊動詞 convince は

　convince 人 that ...

　convince 人 to do ...

　　のように使い、後ろに 直説話法は取りません。

＊下記の persuade 異なり、相手の行為を変えるとの意味合いは全く持ちません。



persuade  説得して人に行動させる　　言辞によって相手の行為を転換させる

to make someone decide to do something, often after  discussion  or  gentle pressure.

　（話し合いやさりげない働きかけなどを経て）誰かに何かをする決心をさせる


　　 間接話法

    She finally persuaded him to stay until the last train, with  promises  she never intended to keep.

   彼女は、守るつもりのない約束を餌にして、ついに彼を終電まで引き止めることに成功した。


＊注意：　persuade someone to do は人の行動を変えさせるの意味ですが、persuade  someone that にすると、人に何かが真実だと信じさせる、納得させる、の意味になります。

＊行動を変えるのではなく考え方を変える、の意味になる訳です。

   She persuaded him that the plan was necessary.

   彼女は彼にその計画が必要だと納得させた。



各動詞のニュアンスの違い


order　　　　　権限にもとづく命令

command　 　さらに強く公的な命令

instruct　　　手順まで含む具体的指示

direct　　　 　行動の方向づけや統制

urge　　　　　必要性を感じて強く促す

warn　　　　　危険回避のため知らせる

advise　　　　相手のための助言

forbid　　　　 禁止を明確に伝える
