中立的に記述する　Reporting Verbs

Ａ．言葉で情報を伝達する

＊以下の９個の動詞を扱います。

  say    go on to say   mension   remark  comment  

  state   articulate   declear   relate

＊これらは全て 「他の者が言ったこと・書いたこと・考え行動したことを、原則的にそのまま伝える」 為に使う動詞です。

＊先行研究の内容を、評価を入れずに紹介する時に向きます。

＊事実を中立的に伝える場面で用いられ、学術文章で多用されるグループです。

＊すなわち、文頭に I think that を冠することが出来ない文になります。

＊一般的に利用される Reporting Verbs に既に触れている動詞が多数有ります。

＊動詞のニュアンスや用法についてはそちらでも触れていますので適宜ご参照下さい。

＊最初に、生物学論文中に用いられることを想定した例文を、２番目に合衆国憲法関連論文中に用いられることを想定した例文を掲載します。

say　　言う　　述べる

to express sothing in words; the most general verb  for  speaking.

　言葉で表す、言う。最も一般的な「言う」

生物

Our data say, in effect, that fragmented mitochondria  are  strongly associated with decreased ATP production.

　私たちのデータは、言い換えれば、分断されたミトコンドリアが ATP 産生の低下と強く関連していると示している。

憲法

Critics say the modern presidency exercises  powers  that  the framers of the United States Constitution could scarcely have imagined, raising doubts  　about the continued adequacy of traditional  separation-of-powers  doctrines.

　批判者たちは、現代の大統領職が、アメリカ合衆国憲法の起草者たちにはほとんど想像し得なかった権限を行使していると述べ、従来の権力分立理論がいまなお十分かどうかに疑問を呈している。

＊say (that) the modern presidency (S) exercises (V) powers (O) の構文です．

go on to say that　　続言する 　更に〜と述べる

to continue speaking or writing and add that…

　話や文章を続けて、「さらに〜と述べている」と言う

Smith et al. (2021) show that loss of p53 function  increases  genomic instability in neural stem cells and go on to say that this instability may 　　accelerate  age-related cognitive decline.

　Smith ら（2021）は、p53 機能の喪失が神経幹細胞のゲノム不安定性を増大させることを示し、更にこの不安定性が加齢に伴う認知機能低下を加速させる可能性があると述べている。

憲法

The Court begins by reaffirming that the  Constitution  embodies  a system of separated powers and checks and balances, and then goes on to say that  　this system does not forbid every form of interbranch  cooperation.

　裁判所はまず、憲法が権力分立と抑制と均衡の制度を体現していることを再確認し、そのうえで、この制度があらゆる形式の府間協力を禁じるものではないと続けて述べている。

mention　　言及する　　軽く述べる

to refer to something briefly without giving  many  details.

　詳しく述べず、軽く触れて言及する

憲法

The Committee’s report briefly mentions that  several  proposed amendments would adjust the allocation of war-making authority under theConstitution,  　but it stops short of endorsing any specific reform.

　委員会報告書は、いくつかの改正案が憲法の下での宣戦権限の配分を修正しようとするものであると軽く言及しているが、特定の改革案を支持するまでには踏み込んでいない。

Several commentators comment that the  current  doctrine  of sovereign immunity sits uneasily with the text and history of the Eleventh Amendment.

　複数の論者は、現在の主権免除の学説は、第11条修正条項の文言および歴史と必ずしも整合的ではないと述べている。

state　　明言する

to say something clearly and directly, often  in  formal style.

Article I of the United States Constitution states that  “all  legislative  Powers” are vested in Congress, a textual commitment that has become a focal  　point in debates over the legitimacy of broad delegations  to  administrative agencies.

　アメリカ合衆国憲法第I条は「一切の立法権」が議会に属すると明言しており、この文言上の付託は、行政機関への広汎な権限委任の正当性をめぐる議論の焦点となってきた。

articulate　　明確化する・明言する

to express ideas clearly and effectively in words.

　考えや感情を分かりやすく、はっきり言語化する

＊これは「部分、構成要素」、また「指関節」を意味するラテン語の articulus に由来し、それを動詞化したものになります。「構成要素に明確化する」ですね。

＊形態学を専門とする塾長としては、まずは例えば　股関節 Hip joint　= Articulatio coxae　などを思い浮かべます。

The author articulates a model in which extracellular  polymeric  substances act as a diffusion barrier and relates several clinical cases in which standard  　antibiotic therapy failed.

　著者は、細胞外高分子物質が拡散バリアとして働くというモデルを明確に提示し、標準的な抗生物質治療が失敗した複数の臨床例を順を追って述べている。

憲法

This Article articulates a functionalist reading of  the  United States Constitution, under which separation of powers is understood less as a set of rigid  　boundaries than as a flexible instrument for preserving  democratic accountability.　

　本稿は、アメリカ合衆国憲法に対する１つの機能主義的な読解を明示し、そこでは権力分立は、硬直した境界の集合というより、民主的説明責任を維持するための柔軟な手段として理解される。

declare  宣言する

to announce something clearly and formally, often  as  an official position.

 しばしば公的な立場として、ある内容を明確かつ公式に述べる

Based on the accumulated evidence, the committee  declares  that the vaccine is safe for use in adults.

　蓄積された証拠に基づき、委員会はそのワクチンが成人に対して安全に使用できると宣言している。

Relying on a robust reading of Article III, some  commentators  declare that Congress cannot strip the federal courts of all jurisdiction over core  　constitutional claims.

　第3条の骨太な解釈に依拠して、一部の論者は、連邦裁判所から核心的な憲法上の請求についてのすべての管轄権を剥奪することは連邦議会にはできないと宣言している。

Garcia et al. (2019) relate several clinical cases in  which  mutations in the CFTR gene lead to atypical cystic fibrosis phenotypes, including preserved  　pancreatic function but severe pulmonary  infection.

　Garcia ら（2019）は、CFTR 遺伝子変異が、膵機能は保たれているものの重度の肺感染症を呈するなど、非典型的な嚢胞性線維症の表現型を引き起こした複数の臨床例を語っている。

Several historians relate episodes from the ratification  debates  in which opponents of the proposed Constitution warned that an insufficiently robust  　separation of powers would invite executive  domination.

　複数の歴史家は、批准論争の中で、提案された憲法の権力分立が十分に強固でなければ行政府の支配を招く、と反対派が警告した場面をいくつか伝えている。
