思考活動を表す　Reporting Verbs

＊単なる淡々とした事実の表現ではなく、動詞が伝える内容に、文の主語側の価値判断を含むものをここでは＜思考活動を表す Reporting Vebs＞と呼称して扱いますが、厳密な意味合いでこの様に分類できるものでは無く、塾長の恣意的な判断が排除できないことをお含みおき下さい。

Ｅ．論じる

＊以下の５個の動詞を扱います。

 discuss   develop   reason   hypothesise   theorise

discuss　　論じる

to talk or write about something in detail, often considering different aspects

　ある事柄をさまざまな側面から詳しく話す或いは書く

生物

More recently, Lee and Garcia (2022) discuss the evolutionary implications of biofilm formation and convey a strong concern about the emergence of 　multidrug-resistant infections.

　より最近では、Lee と Garcia（2022）がバイオフィルム形成の進化的意義について論じ、多剤耐性感染症の出現に対する深い懸念を表明している。

憲法

This Article discusses how contemporary interpretations of the United States Constitution have reshaped the original separation-of-powers framework, 　particularly in the fields of national security and administrative governance.

The author develops his position by arguing that human freedom emerges only when we face our deepest fears.

 筆者は、人間の自由は最も深い恐怖と対峙したときにのみ現れると論じることで、自らの立場を展開している。

The team reported that they developed a high-throughput assay to quantify autophagic flux in primary neurons.

　研究チームは，一次培養神経細胞のオートファジー活性を定量するハイスループットアッセイを開発したと報告した。

憲法

The author explains that, in Part III, he develops a framework for judicial review that reconciles textualism with living constitutionalism.

　筆者は、第3部においてテクスト主義と生きた憲法観を調和させる違憲審査の枠組みを展開していると説明している。

reason　　論じる　　

to think and draw a conclusion using logic

　論理を用いて考え、結論を導く

＊推論する、の訳語を当てると infer との区別が付けられず適当ではありません。

＊reason は論理的に展開して述べるの意味であり、基本的に＜推定する＞の意味は持たないからです。

＊reason = 理由、ですので理由付けして述べるが原義ですね。

On this basis, Smith et al. reason that the observed phenotype is unlikely to be caused by off-target mutations.

　この根拠に基づき、Smithらは観察された表現型がオフターゲット変異によるとは考えにくいと論じている。

憲法

Proponents of a “living Constitution” often reason that the broad and open-textured provisions of the document invite adaptation to contemporary 　conditions.

　「生ける憲法」の支持者たちはしばしば、文書中の幅広く曖昧な規定が、現代の状況への適応を促しているのだと論理づけている。

reason：　　　　　根拠から結論へ筋道を作る

hypothesise：　 事実としてではなく仮説として出す

theorise：　　　 個別の観察を超えて理論的に説明しようとする

to make the cause, mechanism, or reason for something understandable

　物事の原因・機構・理由を明らかにし、理解しやすくする

＊情報を与えて分かりやすくする

This model explains why only a subset of infected cells progresses to productive viral replication.

　このモデルは、感染細胞の一部のみが産生的なウイルス複製へと進行する理由を説明している。

憲法

The Court’s reliance on structural principles rather than explicit text helps explain why certain unenumerated rights have nevertheless been treated as  fundamental under the Constitution.

　裁判所が明文の条文ではなく構造的原理に依拠してきたことは、列挙されていない一部の権利が、それでもなお合衆国憲法の下で基本的権利として扱われてきた理由を説明するのに役立つ。

illustrate　　例示する　例証する

to clarify or make an idea easier to understand, usually by giving an example

　例を挙げるなどして、考えや概念をわかりやすく説明する

The article elaborates how equal protection doctrine constrains facially neutral districting criteria.

　　その論文は、表面上中立的な区割基準を平等保護法理がどのように制約するかを更に詳述している。

define　　　定義する   概念の本質的要件を抽出し，明確な定義を提示する

to state clearly and precisely what a term or concept means

　用語や概念の意味を明確かつ厳密に言い表す

＊理解を助けるというより、言葉の守備範囲を固定する感じが強い

The guideline panel wrote that they define clinical remission as the complete absence of symptoms for at least six months.

　ガイドライン作成委員会は，臨床的寛解を少なくとも6か月間症状が完全に消失した状態と定義すると記した。

憲法

The commentator notes that the Court fails to define what counts as a “compelling interest” in that context.

　論者は、その文脈において何が「やむにやまれぬ利益」に当たるのかを裁判所が定義していないと指摘している。
