思考活動を表す　Reporting Verbs

＊単なる淡々とした事実の表現ではなく、動詞が伝える内容に、文の主語側の価値判断を含むものをここでは＜思考活動を表す Reporting Vebs＞と呼称して扱いますが、厳密な意味合いでこの様に分類できるものでは無く、塾長の恣意的な判断が排除できないことをお含みおき下さい。

Ｇ．示す

＊以下の９個の動詞を扱います：

    show   indicate   point out   reflect  intimate  

　　 imply   suggest   posit　  propose　    

show　　示す

to make something clear or evident, often by presenting data or results

　データや結果を提示して、ある事柄を明確に示す

生物

Recent transcriptomic analyses show that nutrient limitation activates a distinct set of stress-responsive genes in yeast.

　最近のトランスクリプトーム解析は、栄養制限が酵母におけるストレス応答遺伝子の別個のセットを活性化することを示している。

憲法

The history of First Amendment jurisprudence shows that the Supreme Court has gradually expanded the scope of protected political speech under the 　United States Constitution.

　合衆国憲法修正第1条判例の歴史は、合衆国憲法の下で保護される政治的言論の範囲を連邦最高裁が段階的に拡大してきたことを示している。

indicate  示す

to show or point out that something is probably true, often based on evidence

 証拠に基づいて、ある事柄がおそらく真実であることを示す

生物

Our data indicate that low salinity significantly reduces larval survival in this marine invertebrate.

　我々のデータは、この海産無脊椎動物では低塩分が幼生の生存率を有意に低下させることを示している。

憲法

The Court’s fragmented opinions in separation-of-powers cases indicate an underlying disagreement about how strictly the Constitution limits 　presidential authority.

　権力分立事件における最高裁の分裂した意見は、合衆国憲法が大統領権限をどの程度厳格に制約しているかについて、根底に意見の相違があることを示している。

point out　　　指摘する

to draw attention to a particular fact or detail that may not be obvious

　すぐには明らかでない事実や細部に、読者の注意を向けるよう指摘する

生物

Smith et al. (2022) points out that mitochondrial morphology is tightly coupled to metabolic state in cardiomyocytes.

　Smith ら（2022）は、心筋細胞においてミトコンドリア形態が代謝状態と密接に結びついていることを指摘している。

憲法

Madison’s correspondence during the ratification debates points out that many Anti-Federalists feared the new Constitution would erode the autonomy of　the states unless explicit limits on federal power were added.

　批准論争期のマディソンの書簡は、多くの反連邦派が、連邦権力に明示的な制限が加えられないかぎり、新憲法が州の自律性を損なうのではないかと懸念していたことを指摘している。

reflect　　反映する、示す、映し出す

to show, reveal, or make visible a quality, condition, attitude, or underlying reality

　ある事実・傾向・性質・考え方が、別の事柄の中に現れている

＊無生物を主語に取り、reflect the fact that S V,  reflect how S V　は自然ですが、reflect + that 節は不自然になります。

＊人+ reflect that SV で、〜だとしみじみと思う、の意味用法になります。

生物

These expression patterns reflect adaptive responses to oxidative stress in aging neural tissue.

　これらの発現パターンは、老化した神経組織における酸化ストレスへの適応応答を反映している。

憲法

The dissenting opinion reflects a narrower view of federal power under the Commerce Clause.

　その反対意見は、通商条項の下での連邦権限について、より狭い見解を反映している。

intimate

to state or suggest something indirectly, usually in a subtle way

　遠回しにほのめかす、明言はしないがそう示す

生物

The anomalous expression pattern intimates a previously unrecognized regulatory interaction during early embryogenesis.

　その異常な発現パターンは、初期胚発生における未認識の制御相互作用を暗に示している。

憲法

The concurrence intimates that administrative convenience cannot justify burdens on core voting rights.

　その補足意見は、行政上の便宜では中核的な投票権への負担を正当化できないと暗に示している。

imply　　含意する

to suggest something indirectly, without saying it clearly

　はっきり言わずに、何かを遠回しに示唆する

Taken together, these data imply that chronic inflammation can prime hematopoietic stem cells toward a myeloid bias.

　以上を総合すると、これらのデータは慢性炎症が造血幹細胞を骨髄系バイアスへとプライミングしうることを示唆している。

憲法

Read together, these cases seem to imply that the Court is willing to impose stricter limits on Congress when individual liberties are at stake.

　これらの判決を総合的に読むと、個人の自由が問題となる場合には、裁判所は連邦議会に対してより厳格な制限を課す用意があることを示唆しているように思われる。

suggest

＊suggest は以下の２つの異なる意味用法を持っています：

＊いずれも、suggest that...(may)..., suggest doing の形が取れます。

suggest  示唆する

to show or indicate something indirectly, without stating it clearly

 何かをはっきり言わずに、遠回しに示す。暗にそれを示す

＊明確に断言しないが、そう受け取れるように示す、という弱めの 「show」 です。

＊無生物主語を取る場合が多いです。

Our results suggest that elevated CO2 levels may accelerate leaf senescence in shade-intolerant plants.

　我々の結果は、高濃度の二酸化炭素が陰性植物の葉の老化を促進し得ることを示唆している。

= Our results suggest elevated CO2 levels accelerating leaf senescence in shade-intolerant plants.

憲法

Recent empirical studies suggest that the Court’s use of strict scrutiny in First Amendment cases has become more protective of political speech than 　the framers might have anticipated.

　近年の実証研究は、表現の自由事件における厳格審査の運用が、建国の父たちが想定していた以上に政治的言論を保護する方向へと傾いていることを示唆している。

= Recent empirical studies suggest the Court’s use of strict scrutiny in First Amendment cases becoming more protective of political speech than the 　framers might have anticipated.

suggest  提案する

＊注意：動詞 suggest には

to put forward an idea, plan, or possible course of action for other people to consider, discuss, or perhaps accept.

　案、計画、行動の仕方などを、相手が考えたり話し合ったり受け入れたりできるように、＜柔らかな＞提案として出す

＊人或いはそれに代わる組織などが主語になる場合が多いです。

生物学

The committee suggested that the lab reduce animal stress during the observation period.

　委員会は、観察期間中に実験室が動物のストレスを減らすよう提案した。

The researchers suggested revising the sampling method to improve accuracy in the field study.

　研究者たちは、野外研究の精度を高めるため採取方法を見直すことを提案した。

憲法

The judge suggested that both parties address the First Amendment issue more directly.

　その裁判官は、双方が修正第一条の問題をより直接的に論じるよう提案した。

Several commentators suggested reconsidering the statute in light of recent constitutional arguments.

　複数の論者は、近年の憲法上の議論を踏まえてその法律を再検討することを提案した。

posit  仮にそうだと置く、 前提として置く

to suggest or assume something as a basic fact, principle, or starting point for argument

 後続の議論の土台となる前提として提示する

＊見慣れない語かと思いますが、pose やposition から考えて、「置く」の意味かと思い至ればそれで済みますね。

生物

The study posits a threshold model in which cytokine accumulation triggers irreversible tissue remodeling.

　その研究は、サイトカインの蓄積が不可逆的な組織再構築を引き起こすという閾値モデルを提示している。

憲法

The author posits a structural reading of federalism grounded in anti-commandeering principles.

　著者は、反命令原則に基づく連邦主義の構造的解釈を前提に置いている。

propose　　提案する

to put forward an idea or plan for consideration

　検討してもらうために、考えや計画を提案する

生物

Here, we propose that mitochondrial fragmentation serves as an early marker of apoptosis in hepatocytes.

　本研究では、肝細胞においてミトコンドリアの断片化がアポトーシスの早期マーカーとして機能すると提案する。

憲法

In response to these doctrinal inconsistencies, this article proposes a unified standard for evaluating restrictions on voting rights under the Fourteenth 　Amendment.

　これらの判例法上の不整合に応えるために、本稿は第十四修正条項の下での選挙権制限を評価するための統一基準を提案する。

＊各動詞のニュアンスの差：

show          　見れば分かるように示す はっきり示す

indicate      　それと分かる兆候を示す  根拠がそれとなく示す

point out   　 相手が見落としそうな点を指摘する  ここが大事と示す

reflect     　  内容が何かを反映する   性質や傾向が表れる

intimate     　遠回しにほのめかす   直接言わずに示す

imply       　  言外に含む   明言せず含意する

suggest     　可能性としてそれを示す  断定せず示唆する

posit      　   仮定として置く  議論の前提を立てる

propose     　案として出す  提案する

＊使い分けの要点：

show： 証拠や結果が比較的はっきり見えるときに使いやすい語です。図表、調査結果、事実関係の説明でよく使われます。

indicate： 直接断定はしないが、兆候やデータがその方向を示すときに合います。学術文やレポートで使いやすい、やや慎重な語です。

point out： 相手に注意を向けさせる語です。新事実の発見というより、重要点の指摘に向きます。

reflect： 何かを直接主張するというより、傾向、価値観、状況が表面に出ている感じです。数字や発言が背景事情を反映していると言いたいときに自然です。

intimate： かなり書き言葉寄りで、遠回しににおわせる語です。日常会話ではやや硬く、新聞調や文学調で見やすいです。

imply： 話し手の発言内容に、言っていない意味が含まれるときの語です。suggest より論理的な含意に寄りやすいです。

suggest： 可能性をやわらかく出す語です。証拠が完全ではない場面でも使いやすく、報告、論文、会話のどれでも広く使えます。提案の意味でも使えるので文脈判断は必要です。

posit： 議論の土台として仮説や前提を置く語です。観察結果を伝えるというより、理論的に設定する感じが強いです。かなり学術寄りです。学術文脈での reportingverbs の使い分けでも、主張や前提設定に近い語として区別されます。

propose： 具体的な案、方針、解釈を出す語です。suggest より少し主体的で、posit より実務的です。
