　皆様、KVC Tokyo 英語塾　塾長　藤野　健です。

　語法についてのコラムを長期間続けて来ましたが、今回からは再び文法の解説に戻り、過去のコラムにて纏まったテーマとしては扱って来なかった内容について触れていきます。まぁ、文法の落ち穂拾いとなりますが、これは扱うテーマが＜落ち穂＞である事とは無関係であり大切な内容に違いはありませんのでご注意の程を。

　さて、英語には直接話法と間接話法の区別があり、これは日本語での ｢...｣ を使う表現の有無に相当するものになります。日本語では、＜彼は私に｢君は早く宿題を仕上げてくれ｣と言った。＞は直接話法ですが、間接話法に換えると、＜彼は私に私が早く宿題を仕上げる様に言った。＞となります。英語も基本的には同様の考え方での変換が行われるのですが、英語の場合は更に 「...」 内の時制を主節の動詞の時制に応じて変化させる必要が生じます。また、この作法にも幾つかの例外事例や語の用法が存在し、初学者を戸惑わせる場合も見られます。これを鑑み、注意点についてざっと一通り解説して行きましょう。これまでに採りあげてきた文法内容に比較すると理解は容易かと考えます。しかし、この理解は欠かすことの出来ないものですので知識の再確認がてら頭に叩き込んで下さい。　英語には伝聞内容や人の考えた内容を述べる為の一群の動詞が存在し、Reporting Verbs 伝達動詞、報告動詞などと呼称されます。直接話法と間接話法は、それらの動詞が取り得る表現方法の１つの違いに相当するものになります。Reporting Vebrs に関して用例を含めて詳述して行きます。その第３３回目です。

思考活動を表す　Reporting Verbs


＊単なる淡々とした事実の表現ではなく、動詞が伝える内容に、文の主語側の価値判断を含むものをここでは＜思考活動を表す Reporting Vebs＞と呼称して扱いますが、厳密な意味合いでこの様に分類できるものでは無く、塾長の恣意的な判断が排除できないことをお含みおき下さい。



Ｉ．見いだす


＊以下の５個の動詞を扱います：

    find   identify    discover   uncover  reveal



find　　見つける　　見いだす

to discover a result, fact, or relationship through research or analysis

　研究や解析を通じて、新たな結果・事実・関係を見いだす

＊最も無難。結論を淡々と述べたい時に向く


生物

In this study, we find that deletion of the autophagy-related gene significantly extends lifespan in budding yeast.

　本研究では、オートファジー関連遺伝子の欠失が出芽酵母の寿命を有意に延長することを見いだした。


憲法

This Article finds that modern Commerce Clause doctrine departs significantly from the original understanding of federalism embedded in the structure of  the United States Constitution.

　本稿は、現代の通商条項判例法が、合衆国憲法の構造に組み込まれた当初の連邦主義の理解から大きく逸脱しているという結論に至る。



identify　　特定する　　同定する

to recognize and name a specific factor, component, or relationship.

　特定の要因・構成要素・関係を見分けて、それが何であるかを特定する

＊分析者が要素を切り分けて特定する

＊何かを見分ける、抽出する、分類する感じが強いです

cf. identify with:  ～に共感する、一体化する、の意味がありますが Reporting Verb の用法ではありません。

　全ゲノムスクリーニングにより、我々はクロロプラスト形成の新規制御因子をいくつか同定した。


憲法

This study identifies a consistent pattern in which the Supreme Court relies on historical practice to define the outer limits of federal power under the  Constitution.

　本研究は、連邦最高裁が合衆国憲法の下での連邦権限の外延を定めるにあたり、歴史的慣行に依拠するという一貫した傾向を明らかにしている。



discover　　発見する、見いだす、突き止める

to find or learn something previously unknown, especially through investigation, observation, or analysis

　これまで知られていなかったことを、特に調査、観察、または分析を通じて見つけたり学んだりする

＊既知ではないものを初めて見つけたとの含みです。

Researchers discovered a previously unrecognized signaling loop linking hypoxia to immune-cell migration.

　研究者らは、低酸素状態と免疫細胞移動を結びつける未認識のシグナル伝達環を発見した。


憲法

The article discovers a neglected doctrinal tension between federalism principles and voting-rights enforcement.

　その論文は、連邦主義の原理と投票権執行の間に存在する見過ごされてきた教義上の対立を見いだす。



uncover  　明らかにする　暴く

to discover something that was hidden or not previously known

　隠れていたこと、まだ知られていなかったことを見つけ出す

＊不正、問題、隠れた事実の発見

　このゲノムワイドスクリーニングは，これまで特徴づけられていなかった複数のオートファジー制御因子を明らかにしている。


憲法

A careful reading of the ratification debates uncovers deep anxieties about concentrated federal power that continue to shape modern constitutional  doctrine.

　批准論争を注意深く読むと、連邦権力の集中に対する深い不安が浮かび上がり、それが現代の憲法理論をなおも形作っていることが明らかになる。



reveal　　明示する

to make something known that was previously hidden or unknown

　これまで隠れていた・知られていなかった事柄を明らかにして示す

＊主語が data, analysis, results の時、特に自然な文になります。

＊reveal は、人が能動的に探したというより、evidence や data がその結果として見せる意味合いの動詞です。

Single-cell RNA-seq analysis reveals a previously unappreciated diversity of fibroblast subpopulations.

　単一細胞RNAシーケンス解析により，線維芽細胞サブポピュレーションのこれまで認識されていなかった多様性が明らかになった。


憲法

Close study of the Reconstruction Amendments reveals an ambitious project to remake the Constitution along more egalitarian lines.

　再建期修正条項を精査すると、より平等主義的な方向へ憲法を書き換えようとする野心的な構想が浮かび上がる。




＊各動詞のニュアンスとその含み


find             調べた結果そう分かる、事実報告             　　 もっとも無難で汎用的

identify       対象や要因を特定する分類、認定、ラベル付け    分析的でやや技術的

discover      新しいものを見つける新規性、初発見               やや強めで華やか

uncover       隠れていたものを見つけ出す                       investigative な響きがある

reveal         結果が何かを明らかにする、表面化、開示    フォーマルで論文でも使いやすい
